Future Auggie Panel on Tech Expectations 4/15

Lindell 301
Friday April 15, 2016
3 - 4:30 p.m.

What do future Auggies expect from Augsburg when it comes to technology?

What do future Auggies expect from their courses, faculty and campus?

The Augsburg IT Department is sponsoring a future student panel to explore what technology future Auggies expect. Come see a panel, moderated by a current Auggie, where three incoming first year students will talk about what they expect from Augsburg's technology.

Teenagers have grown up in a world where technology is everywhere and how they learn is infused with technology. Many K-12 systems have laptop programs, smartboards, and use tools like moodle. This sets an expectation and shapes how they learn -- we need to understand this digital reality so we can help students succeed in the college environment. Come and hear from this panel and engage with them on questions you have about their digital reality.

Scholarly Writing Retreat

May 15-17, 2016
Dunrovin Retreat Center

Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat - it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

The retreat will take place Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m. (after lunch) through Tuesday, May 17 at 1 p.m. (after lunch). Please email ctl@augsburg.edu to reserve your space.

Earth Day April 22

Tug on your tights and clip on your cape--you're a SUPERHERO!

Shred Right, our document destruction service, reminds us: You have a chance to help save the world! You can do it! Not sure how? Start one small habit on Earth Day (coming up on April 22) and impact the lives of all of us who get to live with you on this planet. You can plan now for little, or BIG, ways to help!

Here are some small ways (you can easily fit into your schedule) to help:
*Pick up trash! In your neighborhood, at work, as it blows by you at soccer practice.
*Recycle! You know the drill: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Every bit helps.
*Plant something! A tree, flowers, vegetables--get in the dirt.
*Turn your computer off at night! Save some energy.
*Use one less paper napkin! Reduce.
*Take a shorter shower! Save some water.
*Reduce paper mail by receiving online statements. Contact your banks, utility companies, investment firms, insurance companies, etc. and request online communications.

Free Flowers and Berries From The Garden

Many of the flowers and perennials in the Augsburg Community Garden need new homes as we make room for new construction. If you need day lilies (many of them beautiful hybrids by our own Ralph Butkowski!), bearded irises, hostas, strawberries, or raspberries, come and take some home with you! We'll be in the garden this Saturday (April 9) from 9-11 a.m. to help people dig them up, or you can grab them next week on your own (we'll have the plots labeled so you know where to dig).

Help these plants continue to share their beauty and berries!

Augsburg Total Wellness - April Food Drive

For this month's wellness activity, we're going to focus on feeling good, by doing good.

We will be collecting food items for Augsburg College's Campus Cupboard, which provides free food to students throughout the year. The food shelf is supported by Campus Kitchen at Augsburg, A'Viands, and the Thrivent Leadership Fellows. In 2015, the Cupboard served 110 students, with a total of 244 visits to take home 985 free grocery items. This is a fantastic resource we have for our students and it wouldn't be possible without donations from folks like you!

Donations will be accepted in the Human Resources office from April 6 through April 15.

Items that the Cupboard is in need of (and what our students would like to see more of) include:
grains (e.g., cereal, rice, etc)
canned tuna
canned soup (not just canned broth)
canned vegetables and beans
non-dairy granola bars
chicken Alfredo sauce
tomato paste
pancake mix and waffle mix
snacks like Cheez-its and crackers
The Campus Cupboard will accept a variety of other non-perishable food items, which makes it even easier for us to help our students as they head into final examinations and summer!

If you have any questions, please let me know at peterlin@augsburg.edu.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Two Auggies Receive Phillips Scholarships

Each year the Minnesota Private College Council awards six scholarships from the Jay and Rose Phillips Foundation to students who attend its 17 member institutions. This year, two of the six were awarded to Augsburg students. The two-year scholarship requires students to develop a project that addresses an unmet need in Minnesota during the summer between their junior and senior years.

TRIO/SSS student Tou Xiong and Maria Cruz-Mendiola join current Auggies Dua Saleh '16, Sagal Ali '15, and Muna Mohamed '15 as recipients of this prestigious scholarship.
