Academic Year Research Grants Available

URGO Academic Year Research Grants are now available for undergraduate students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. This is a great way to ease into research if you have never done it before, or to continue work on an existing project. Students from all disciplines are invited to apply, and past projects have ranged from biology lab work to theater performance. Contact a faculty member within your major to discover research in progress that you may be able to join. Alternatively, you can work collaboratively with a faculty member to develop a new project. Once you have a project in mind, work with your mentor to fill out the application found on our website: http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/ under "applications."

Grant winners may receive up to $1,200 for research supplies and/or a student stipend. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so do not hesitate to talk with a faculty member and get the ball rolling!

Open Enrollment Going on Now

Who Needs to Complete the Form(s):

• Anyone wanting to make changes or enroll in health, dental, HSA, FSA Medical, FSA Dependent Care or Supplemental Life and AD&D coverages.
• Your medical and dental plan elections from 2015 will roll over to 2016 if you make no changes.
• You must complete a form for any HSA, FSA Medical, or FSA Dependent Care deductions for 2016.

One of the first female singers in Somalia in the 1960's, she was a star in her homeland while in her teens. Absorbing every influence she could find, she blended Western African sound to pioneer the popular qaraami style, now known as "Somali jazz". When the civil war broke out in the 1990's, she fled the country with her children, traveling on foot for seven months to Djibouti. After gaining asylum in Denmark, Mursal recorded and released her debut autobiographical album "The Journey" on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records. She will perform with a live band including Augsburg alums and artists from around the world.
Tickets are $25, free with an Augsburg I.D.

Soup & Sweater Winter Clothing Drive

During the month of October, the Reslife Mortensen Hall team did an event called Soup & Sweater. The fourth day of the drive, the Mortensen Hall team served the community hot and delicious soup made by Judah from the Soup For You program at Bethany Lutheran Church. The Mortensen Hall team continued the drive up to November 1st. The goal was to reach 150 clothing items . But the team reached up to 231 clothing items. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our drive and supported us. The donation will be going to Our Saviour's Housing.

Want to Lead a Short-Term Program? Apply by 12/19

Faculty interested in leading a short-term study abroad program in 2016-2017 must submit a proposal by December 19, 2015. More information is available at www.augsburg.edu/global - look under Resources for faculty and staff. At this URL, faculty can review the application itself, along with an informational packet that addresses common questions related to location, cost, marketing, and roles/responsibilities.

Faculty are also welcome to submit for 2017-2018! While firm decisions regarding 2017-2018 proposals will not be made during this cycle; they will be reviewed and, when possible, given preference for acceptance during the next cycle.

Career Quick Stop

These drop-in hours are designed to expand access to career coaches and to accommodate impromptu student career questions as they arise. During Quick Stop hours students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis for brief, 15-minute drop-in appointments. These times are meant for quick career questions, brief resume or cover letter reviews, or help getting started with an internship or job search. Give to the Max for Augsburg

Give to the Max Day is Thursday, November 12, and is the greatest giving holiday in the state of Minnesota -- our chance to support the Minnesota nonprofits, schools, and universities nearest and dearest to our hearts.

Last year, for the second year in a row, Augsburg College came in first among all participating colleges and universities, and received more than 1,300 gifts totaling more than $432,000 from alumni/ae, students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, and friends from across the US and abroad. Paid Internships in China

Augsburg graduates and graduating seniors (May 2016) are invited to apply for a one-academic year Internship at UIC. Applications for the Intern position must be completed and submitted to UIC's International Development Office no later than the 14th of February 2016.

Requirements for the Application include:

1. Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in any relevant programme.

2. A full transcript of academic work completed with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.

3. Two letters of recommendation from academic staff supporting the application.

4. A full personal resume including an expression of interest in a position in a specific programme which is offered as a major at UIC. The applicant should articulate the skills and experience he/she would bring to this specific area of the UIC academic programme. General Education is also a viable academic area in which to pursue an Intern position. See the following website for more information on the academic curriculum at UIC: http://uic.edu.hk/en/

5. Additional information of activities, working experiences, travel and special strengths including computer/technology skills which are important in assuming the role of an Intern.

6. Agreement to enroll in a specially designed "Chinese Language, Culture, History and Development Programme"(see Compensation for the Intern Position at UIC below for details) offered by the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture (CLC) at UIC during their year of residence at UIC.

7. An interview conducted by the Director of International Education at the home institution in which the applicant is enrolled. It is the applicant's responsibility to schedule this interview with the Director of International Education at his/her home institution.


Compensation for the Intern position at UIC:

1. A monthly housing allowance (RMB1000, for example, for shared apartments at Horizon Cove) will be granted; health insurance; and a round-trip economy air ticket from home country to China of up to RMB11, 000 on a reimbursement basis (the China-home country ticket is given upon successful completion of contract) and ferry or bus fare from airport of arrival to Zhuhai;

2. A monthly stipend of RMB 6000 ($950 US) is paid from assumption of duties in August/September to the end of June. During this period Interns are involved in assigned duties and organizing activities (see requirements and responsibilities of Interns below).

3. A "Chinese Language, Culture, History and Development Programme" consisting of (a) two Chinese language classes of 3 hours weekly in both semesters; (b) lectures/seminars on Chinese culture, history and development at fortnightly intervals, 2 to 3 hours each, 3 to 4 times per semester; and (c) 2-4 visits to historical sites and museums in nearby locations to appreciate the great depth of Chinese history and culture.

Joanne Reeck - Voice Of Inclusion Award

At the state-wide conference for the Minnesota College Professionals Association this fall, Joanne Reeck (Chief Diversity Office and Director of Campus Activities and Orientation) was presented with the Voice of Inclusion Award. The award "recognizes individual who serve Minnesota Higher Education by creating exemplary environments of inclusion for students, employees, and/or institutions." Joanne was recognized for her institutional work as the Chief Diversity Office, serving as the advisor for Students for Racial Justice, sponsoring the annual Leadership Institute that focuses on anti-racism, and creating and implementing the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate program. Please join us in congratulating Joanne!

The Department of Residence Life is doing a departmental project called Safety and Sustainability. There is a competition going on within the residential halls to see who can collect the most plastic bags. The student staffs are working really hard to plan for this project.

Keeping Track of Auggies

New Social Work Text Published

Melissa Hensley, assistant professor of social work, along with several departmental colleagues, is pleased to announce the publishing of "The Social Work Field Instructor's Survival Guide" by Springer Publishing. This book is a practical guide for community-based social workers who supervise undergraduate and graduate social work interns. Dr. Hensley edited the book; other faculty contributors include Dr. Laura Boisen, Dr. Bibiana Koh, Dr. Christina Erickson, Dr. Lois Bosch, and Mary Simonson Clark.
