Courage and Renewal Retreat Series

I would like to invite you to consider participating in a Courage & Renewal Retreat series beginning in October. In these challenging times, we often face the question of how to stay true to our deeply held values amid the complexity of our roles and responsibilities. For those of us who teach, lead and serve our communities, it's especially crucial that we make time to renew our spirits and reflect on the purpose and meaning that underlie our work so that we can sustain ourselves.

This retreat series explores issues of transition, vocation, life purpose, meaning, and renewal. Seasonal metaphors, poetry and prose, music and video, nature and movement, small and large group conversations, personal reflection and journaling are catalysts for considering generative questions, building community, developing greater alignment with our values and reconnecting who we are with what we do.

At this Courage & Renewal® retreat series you'll discover a unique kind of professional and personal development—one that deepens your self-awareness and renews your energy to live and lead with authenticity, integrity and courage. I know you would find this to be a very meaningful experience. For additional information and registration go to www.couragerenewalmn.org. You may also contact Ron Petrich at petrich@augsburg.edu with questions as you consider participation.

Hybrid Help (and Sandwiches)

Are you teaching a hybrid course that is meeting this Saturday (9/12)? If so, please stop in at OGC 103 between noon and 1 pm to grab a sandwich and consult about/get help with your gradebook (or anything else, Moodle). This isn't a workshop--just a chance to grab a quick bite before/after/between classes and get some answers to questions about the online aspects of your hybrid course(s) from a member of the e-Learning team. Keeping Track of Auggies

Jacqui deVries Publishes Essays

After starting classes last week, Jacqueline deVries (History) flew to England to present her work on gender and the religious press in interwar Britain, at the Women's History Network Conference (UK) in Canterbury. The essay will appear as a chapter in the Edinburgh Companion to Women's Print Media in Interwar Britain (1918-1939), edited by Catherine Clay (Nottingham), Maria DiCenzo (Wilfred Laurier), and Barbara Green (Notre Dame), to be published by the University of Edinburgh Press. URGO research assistant Nicholas Stewart-Bloch made a substantial contribution to the research by reading more than ten years (1918-1930) of London's Jewish Chronicle this summer.

She has also recently published several essays, including one on early twentieth-century women's medicine -- "A Moralist and Modernizer": Mary Scharlieb and the Creation of Gynaecological Knowledge, ca.1880-1914," Social Politics 22:3 (Fall 2015) – to which URGO research assistant Heidi Heller contributed by combing through The British Medical Journal in the 1880s and 1890s in summer 2013; and a chapter titled "Sounds Taken for Wonders: Revivalism and Religious Experience in the British Women's Movement," in The Spirit of Things: Material Religion in Modern Britain, eds. Timothy W. Jones and Lucinda Matthews-Jones (London: Palgrave, 2015), in which she draws insights from Homi Bhabha to explore women's suffrage sounds and songs as sites of cultural negotiation. She was the only contributor to the volume from outside the United Kingdom.
