Your Input is Wanted: CLASS Director Search TODAY

Today we welcome the second of two candidates for the CLASS Office Director position for on-campus interviews. The candidate has been asked to develop a 15-minute presentation discussing the key challenges and opportunities in disability services at a college. After the presentation, audience members will be invited to ask the candidate questions and provide feedback for the search committee. You can help make the search a success by attending the presentation sessions, asking questions, and providing your input.

Applying for Med, PA, PT, or Other Health Schools?

URGO will be hosting Application Bootcamp for students and alumni who are applying to professional schools in the health field this year (Medicine, Dentistry, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, etc.). The bootcamp includes three sessions:

May 8, 10-2 in Sverdrup 201
May 14, 10-2 in Sverdrup 201
May 19, 10-2 in Sverdrup 201

It will feature application instruction from Dr. Dale Pederson, personal statement guidance from Dr. Dal Liddle, and individualized advising from URGO. Students are strongly recommended to attend all three sessions to develop a high quality application, and are encouraged to sign up for as many sessions as possible. The work time and support is designed for students at all stages of the application process, those who haven't started yet and those who are well underway. Students who attend will receive priority feedback on applications and secondaries following bootcamp.

Teach or Research Abroad with Fulbright

Fulbright is a competitive national fellowship that provides the opportunity to teach English, research, or study for a year (the 2015-2016 academic year) in one of 155 countries. Currently, we have three Auggies teaching English in Turkey, Taiwan, and the Czech Republic. Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree by summer 2015 to be eligible (alumni are welcome to apply as well), and generally a GPA of 3.5 or higher is needed for a competitive application. If you are interested in applying for a Fulbright, summer is the time to get started! Please contact URGO at urgo@augsburg.edu to find out if Fulbright is a good fit for you!

Don't Let the English Department Take Over

Several members of the English Department will be at Jessica's Writing Retreat. Show them that other disciplines can put pen to paper by signing up for the event. For a few days the coffee is always on, all you have to do is show up at meal time, and the solitude will help you focus on your writing.

The retreat will take place at the Dunrovin Retreat Center outside Marine on St. Croix (www.dunrovin.org). The center will be open for our use from Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. through Tuesday, May 20 at 1 p.m. (after lunch).

The Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. There will be no charge for participants. To make a reservation, please email ctl@augsburg.edu.

Augsburg offers an eight week GRE prep course each summer for students and alumni at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by Augsburg faculty and staff and walks students through each section of the general test. Bookstore Hours and Rental Information

The bookstore will be open from
April 25: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
April 26: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
April 28-May 1: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
May 2: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

We will be open Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

If you have not purchased your cap and gown, please come into the store and do so ASAP. We will be open well before both ceremonies, so there is time to purchase prior to commencement if you are unable to make it in during our extended hours next week.

Rentals are due Thursday, May 1. If you are unable to bring to the store, please use the postage paid label we provide. All instructions are located in the first reminder email sent out Sunday evening, April 20. You will receive a total of 8 reminder emails before we consider your rental late (after May 1) and charge your card. Please make sure you are checking your emails if you are unsure how you acquired your books.

If you are selling your books back (next Monday April 28 - Thursday May 1) please have your student ID on hand. All buybacks will require your student ID. Please verify the books you are selling back are your purchased books.

Dr. Rodenborg Receives Teaching Fellowship

Nominated by one of her students, Nancy Rodenborg received an Outstanding Teacher Fellowship to attend the Cambridge Teacher Seminar at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. Led by distinguished scholars, the week-long summer seminar gives participants an opportunity to discuss current resources on teaching scholarship as well as innovations in pedagogy & curriculum. Dr. Rodenborg will join a seminar specifically focusing on the integration of history into the classroom experience. In her application Rodenborg described how social work incorporates liberal arts into professional study, emphasizing how important it is for students to understand history's role in shaping the contemporary social service context. Rodenborg received her undergraduate degree in music and German and is excited to return to a liberal arts focus for a week. She has deferred attendance until summer 2015.

Anderson '82 and Rock '81 Support CSBR

Brian Anderson '82, who triple majored in Physics, Math and Religion, knew English was not his strong suit. Noticing a woman in the back row giving excellent answers in their freshman English class, he waited by the classroom door one day to introduce himself to Leeann Rock '81. They met frequently at the campus snack bar, the Chin Wag. They married in 1983.

Leeann and Brian, who felt superbly prepared for their vocations and grateful for meeting each other, have given $100,000 for the Center for Science, Business, and Religion. Their gift is designated for the Theodore Hanwick, Sr. Intro to Physics Laboratory. The cost of naming the laboratory for Dr. Hanwick is $500,000, and Leeann and Brian are giving in response to the $250,000 challenge grant established by Dan '65 and Alice Anderson (no relation.)
