Severe Weather Awareness: Tornado
SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK
Minnesota participates in Severe Weather Awareness Week during April 15-19. Please review the information posted to be prepared for severe weather this Spring and learn how to keep yourself and our campus community safe.
THURSDAY: Tornadoes
According to the National Weather Service, Minnesota experiences an average of 40 tornadoes per year. In 2012, 37 twisters touched down. A record was set in 2010 with 104 tornadoes across the state.
Understanding this threat and knowing what to do when a tornado is approaching can save lives.

What To Do During a Tornado Event
Avoid windows. Get in the basement and under some kind of sturdy protection (heavy table or work bench), or cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag. If you live in an apartment that is on an upper floor, get to the lowest level of the building that you can immediately. This could be an underground parking garage or a neighbor's first floor apartment. Then move to the most interior area possible, away from windows. If you live in a high-rise apartment building, you may not have enough time to get to a lower level, so picking a place in the hallway in the center of your building is the best idea such as a stairwell. If that is not available then a closet, bathroom or interior hall without windows is the safest spot in your apartment during a tornado. Power loss during a tornado storm is common, so avoid elevators and keep a flashlight handy.
In A Car or Truck
Vehicles are extremely dangerous in a tornado. If the tornado is visible, far away, and the traffic is light, you may be able to drive away from its path by moving at right angles to the tornado. Otherwise, park the car as quickly and safely as possible -- out of the traffic lanes. Get out and seek shelter in a sturdy building. If in the open country, run to low ground away from any cars (which may roll over on you). Lie flat and face-down, protecting the back of your head with your arms. Avoid seeking shelter under bridges, which can accelerate the wind while offering little protection against flying debris.

If possible, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If not, lie flat and face-down on low ground, protecting the back of your head with your arms. Get as far away from trees and cars as you can; they may be blown onto you in a tornado.
Augsburg Alerts: Emergency Notification System:
All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to register for Augsburg Alerts, an emergency notification system operated by Augsburg College. Augsburg Alerts is an electronic communications tool to communicate timely information regarding active emergencies or weather closures via text message, voice mail, and/or email to registered personal cell phones, landlines, or personal email addresses.
Augsburg Alerts only will be used to communicate important information related to weather closings, or during an active emergency, to help individuals make sound decisions about their personal safety. Examples of situations in which Augsburg Alerts may be used could include natural weather events that lead to an unscheduled closing of the College, or for emergency situations such as a gas leak, fire, bomb threat, active shooter, power failure, or other event. Augsburg Alerts will NOT be used to notify the community of things such as enrollment deadlines, sporting events, or other non-emergency information.

Statewide Tornado Sirens Today (Drills)
Statewide tornado sirens will activate at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. as a part of Severe Weather Awareness Week. Due to the timing with finals approaching - Augsburg will not be formally participating in the tornado drill activities. We encourage you to visit the Public Safety website and review the Emergency Guidebook for tornado shelter locations and other emergency procedures information.

On Thursday April 24, 2014 simulated tornado watches and warnings will be issued to test the statewide warning and communications systems. All counties in Minnesota normally participate in the first drill at 1:45 p.m. unless actual severe weather is expected. The schedule is as follows:
1:00 p.m. All six weather National Weather Service offices that serve Minnesota will issue a simulated tornado watch (TOA). NOAA Weather Radios will activate with the real TOA code.
1:45 p.m. The National Weather Service will issue a simulated tornado warning (TOR) for Minnesota counties. Note that most cities and counties will activate outdoor warning siren systems. NOAA Weather Radios will activate with the real TOR code.
2:00 p.m. The National Weather Service will issue an "End of Test" message using the Severe Weather Statement product. No alarm on weather radio.
6:55 p.m. The National Weather Service offices will issue another simulated tornado warning (TOR). NOAA Weather Radios will activate with the real TOR code.
7:10 p.m. The National Weather Service will issue an "End of Test" message using the Severe Weather Statement product. No alarm on weather radio.

Teach or Research Abroad with Fulbright
Fulbright is a competitive national fellowship that provides the opportunity to teach English, research, or study for a year (the 2015-2016 academic year) in one of 155 countries. Currently, we have three Auggies teaching English in Turkey, Taiwan, and the Czech Republic. Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree by summer 2015 to be eligible (alumni are welcome to apply as well), and generally a GPA of 3.5 or higher is needed for a competitive application. They are a Personal Care Assistant company located in the Twin Cities and Duluth areas. They specialize in matching college students with meaningful experiences as Personal Care Assistants. Student Experience gives students an opportunity to work with clients with mental and physical disabilities with a majority of their clients under the age of 20.

May Eye Opener - Bishop Svennungsen

Featured Speaker, ELCA Bishop Ann Svennungsen.
Bishop Ann Svennungsen was elected February 2012 as the first woman to lead the Minneapolis Synod. Bishop Svennungsen deeply values the ELCA commitment to social justice action and serves as the director of The Presidents' Pledge Against Global Poverty. She has had a variety of experiences, in addition to pastoring four very different congregations in vastly different circumstances, she also served as the CEO of the Fund for Theological Education in Atlanta and the president of Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.
We look forward to a discussion about faith, love, and vocation from Bishop Ann Svennungsen on May 8th, at our spring Auggie Eye Opener.
