$30,000 to Help Fund Graduate Degree
Attention Juniors!
Are you interested in a career in public service?
Do you plan to attend graduate or professional school?
Could you use $30,000 to fund your education?
If so, you may be eligible for the Truman Scholarship, a merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. The Foundation seeks candidates who have extensive records of public and community service, are committed to careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills.
Additional eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship and junior standing (or senior standing, but in the third year of college enrollment).

Writing Across The Curriculum Brainstorm
Monday, December 9, 6-8 p.m., in OGC 103
Augsburg faculty are invited to gather to share strategies for (1) giving students helpful summative feedback and (2) dealing with the grading-related work load at the end of the term. Several faculty will be present to offer their own approaches and tips; attendees are welcome (but certainly not expected) to share their ideas as well.
This will be a very, very low-pressure, relaxed gathering with no experts -- "just" a group of generous colleagues. Plus, good pizza will provided. Therefore, please RSVP to Colin Irvine (irvinec@augsburg.edu) or to the submitter (above) of this here A-mail post.

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian Students
$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal policy and Native American health care
If you're committed to applying your education and training directly to solving problems in Indian Country and interested in being plugged into a growing network of American Indian student leaders across the country, check out the Udall Scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care; or
- To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment.

- Up to $5,000 for educational expenses

The Future of Higher Education: MOOC or MBC?
(Massive Open Online Classroom or Massively Better Classrooms?)
Join your colleagues at Augsburg and across the world in discussions about the future of higher education. Cathy Davidson, Professor of English at Duke and co-founder of the Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Alliance and Collaboration, or HASTAC, will be offering a 6-week MOOC on "The Future of Higher Education" through the Coursera platform, starting on January 27, 2014. The course is free (and ungraded!)
The Dean's Office, in collaboration with Gen Ed and Faculty Development, will co-sponsor bi-weekly discussion circles in February and March 2014 to reflect on the course material. Math Jeopardy - Augsburg Places Second
Augsburg placed second to Macalester last evening at the 4th annual Math Jeopardy contest sponsored by Unbounded - the Augsburg Math Club, the Augsburg Student Government, and the mathematics departments at Augsburg, St. Thomas, Concordia-St.Paul, and Macalester.
Augsburg team consisted of: Andy Walsh, Juan TigreLazo, Sadie Tetrick, Nazih Safi, Weixin Peng, Katie Nelson, Alex Greig, Andris Bibelnieks, and Fikre Beneye. Open Forum: The State of Marketing in Higher Ed
Rebecca John, vice president of Marketing and Communication, will share reflections from the 2013 American Marketing Association Higher Education conference. The discussion will include an overview of major challenges and changes in higher education marketing and how the work at Augsburg fits into this landscape.

Conversation: Academic Progress Reports, Alerts
This fall we launched new software programs to get faculty feedback on student progress, specifically students in danger of not passing/falling below a 2.0. The Midterm Progress Report (MPR) was a survey format - which was new. We also had the "ad hoc" alert, similar to what we had before.
The purpose of this conversation is to quickly review what we did, discuss our plans for spring semester, and get feedback and input from faculty.
