Workshop on Intercultural Skills Enhancement
Calling all faculty and staff involved in cross-cultural learning: On February 5-7, 2014, Wake Forest University will host WISE 2014, the premier conference focused on the development of intercultural skills and awareness during study abroad and other forms of international education (service learning, individual research, etc.). WISE is a practitioner's conference focused on helping faculty leaders, program coordinators, and resident staff develop the knowledge and skills they need in order to help study abroad students develop intercultural skills and global awareness.
A significant and growing amount of research affirms the need for intentionality in the planning and implementation of cross-cultural learning in the context of study abroad. This event is now the only full-scale professional conference focused on intercultural learning in study abroad.
WISE is designed for faculty who lead or teach short- or long-term programs abroad, and for study abroad professionals who assist students in this important cross-cultural experience. It is a place where these professionals can share insights, strategies and personal experiences about intercultural competency in practical, hands-on sessions.
WISE 2014 will include four sessions focused on the most important intercultural training models now in use. WISE 2014 will also feature two sessions dedicated to assessment of student learning of intercultural competency and awareness. A total of 28 concurrent sessions will be offered over a two-day period.
A preliminary schedule for the conference has been posted on the conference website, http://cis.wfu.edu/wise/schedule/ . The early bird registration rate is available through December 9, 2013.
$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian Students
$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal policy and Native American health care

Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care; or
- To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment.

- Up to $5,000 for educational expenses

$30,000 to Help Fund Graduate Degree

Do you plan to attend graduate or professional school?
Could you use $30,000 to fund your education?
If so, you may be eligible for the Truman Scholarship, a merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. The Foundation seeks candidates who have extensive records of public and community service, are committed to careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills.
Additional eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship and junior standing (or senior standing, but in the third year of college enrollment).

Have you completed your Augsburg Experience graduation requirement? If not, this is a great opportunity to learn about your options to complete this requirement and select one that helps you apply your academics and enhance your experience at Augsburg. The options we will review include:

Last Day for Benefits Enrollment
All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment form, even if you plan to maintain the same benefit coverage elections from 2013. Additionally due to enrollment forms being submitted online, no paper forms will be accepted.

Spanish Conversation This Thursday

AQIP Accreditation Update
Augsburg College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission using the Academic Quality Improvement Pathway (AQIP). We are the middle of the Reaffirmation of Accreditation process, which will culminate in a decision as to our accreditation status by the AQIP Review Panel in 2014-15.
Reaffirmation of Accreditation Timeline
- November 2012: We submitted the AQIP Systems Portfolio Report for review by a team of peer evaluators.
- April 2013: We received a review of our Systems Portfolio (the Systems Appraisal)
--Evaluators identified three areas of concern: assessment of student learning, systematic data collection, and use of data to inform decisions.
- Summer-Fall 2013: A team of faculty and staff worked to gather evidence to document our achievements in the three areas of concern.
- October 2013: Two teams of faculty and staff attended two HLC workshops—the Strategy Forum and an Assessment Workshop.
- December 2013: Submission of Materials for the Upcoming Quality Checkup Visit
--We will submit an electronic portfolio that addresses the three areas of concern and provides evidence to demonstrate our achievements in those areas and/or plans for improvement.
--We will submit documentation to demonstrate compliance with Federal standards for colleges and universities.
--We will submit a summary of our quality improvement activities since our last reaffirmation of accreditation in 2007.
--April 2-4, 2014: Quality Checkup Visit
--Two peer evaluators (people who reviewed our Systems Portfolio) will be on campus, meeting with students, faculty, members of the Board, staff, and administrators.
- 2014-2015: Reaffirmation of accreditation decision is made by an AQIP Review Panel based on all the AQIP action projects, System Portfolios, Quality Summary, and Quality Checkup report.
Action Projects
In addition to the work surrounding Reaffirmation of Accreditation, we continue to make progress on three active Action Projects:
(1) The Enrollment Plan developed last fall.
(2) The implementation of Hobson's Retain and Agile Advisor software.
(3) The assessment of mission outcomes.
As part of the October 2013 Strategy Forum, we developed a new Action Project that responds directly to concerns raised in the Systems Appraisal: "Cultivating a Culture of Evidence-Based Strategic Planning" will be initiated Fall 2014 in connection with the development of the Office for Planning and Effectiveness.

Augsburg faculty and staff have a long tradition of inviting international students to join them for a Thanksgiving meal.
If you are interested in hosting one or several international students for a Thanksgiving meal, please send a note to porter@augsburg.edu to be matched with students or ask questions about hosting. 1. Donate items for Thanksgiving meals
Here's what we need: french onions, stuffing mix or bread cubes, canned pumpkin, and potato flakes or real spuds. Donations can be dropped off in the Christensen Center Lobby on Wednesday 11/20 from 11 to 1 p.m.
2. Sign up to volunteer for one of our Thanksgiving shifts
