Understanding Intercultural Conflict Styles

This staff development workshop will provide participants an opportunity to learn their personal intercultural conflict style, learn about the intercultural conflict styles of others, and takeaway strategies for working across these conflict style differences.

Joanne K. Reeck-Irby serves as Director of Campus Activities and Orientation at Augsburg and has trained students and staff in areas of cultural competency, anti-oppression, white privilege, and inclusive language for over 10 years.

Wednesday- Medical Scribe Information Session

This Wednesday, URGO will be hosting an information session on medical scribing with an emergency department scribing agency from here in the Twin Cities. A scribe is a medical documentation specialist who works with an emergency department physician to produce medical notes recording what occurs during a patient's visit. The scribe is directly involved in patient interviews and physical exams and continues as an integral part of the treatment team throughout the patient's stay in the emergency department. Many students applying for medical school or other health-related fields have found scribing to be a great learning experience.

Women's Center and Cafe Latte-Thursday

Please come to the open house in the Anne Pedersen Women's Resource Center in Sverdrup #207A this Thursday, January 31st from 3:30-5:00. Cafe Latte cakes (generously donated by Dr. Koryne Horbal), coffee, and tea will be served. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to come and meet Dr. Adriane Brown (new director of the center and Director of Women's Studies at Augsburg) learn about the center, and offer suggestions for programs and services.

Grand Opening of Augsburg Food Shelf

We invite you to attend the grand opening of the new food shelf at Augsburg!

When: February 1, 2013

Time: 10:20 – 10:40: Inter-faith chapel service on hunger
10:45 – 12:00: Ribbon-cutting ceremony with refreshments

Location: Chapel and Foss atrium

We encourage people to bring non-perishable food items to the opening ceremony. There will also be three permanent collection bins for donations located on campus: in front of Nabo, Einstein's Bros, and the Commons.

The following items have been identified by college students as the most useful: canned tuna and chicken, rice, beans, soup, cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, oatmeal and granola bars.

The food shelf provides free food to students throughout the academic year. The hours of operation are Tuesday 3-5 p.m., Wednesday 7–9 p.m. and Thursday 11-1 p.m.

The food shelf is the work of partnership between faculty, staff, and students who originally came together as part of the Fighting Poverty at Augsburg special interest group. The food shelf is supported by A'viands, Campus Kitchen at Augsburg, and the Thrivent Leadership Fellows.

Nominations Open for 2012 Outstanding Staff Awards

Staff Senate is seeking nominations for the 2012 Augsburg College Outstanding Staff Awards. This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions.

To be considered for this award, the nominee must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

Day at the Capitol Event

On March 21st, Augsburg students will have the opportunity to attend the Day at the Capitol event. This is a day-long experience in which Augsburg will send students to the Capitol in order to meet representatives and learn about topics such as political activism and finance policy. A primary purpose of this event is to encourage the Minnesota State Government to continue funding the State Grant Program, which provides $3 million dollars annually in financial aid to Augsburg students. Transportation and lunch are provided free of charge. Additionally, participants will be exempt from classes during the entire day. Come to the event to engage in the political community, practice student activism, and protect your financial aid!

Invisible Politics Event TONIGHT

Join members of the Somali youth group Kajoog in a discussion of the recent developments in Somalia with the election and the promising decrease in violence. The group is working to bring to light elements of the political dynamics that have previously been "invisible." The keynote speaker will be Hamid Masheye, who is currently a Minneapolis Public Schools Educator. From August 2011 to November 2012, he was the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Transitional Federal Government of the Somali Republic. Mr. Masheye holds Masters degrees in Petroleum Chemistry, Economics, and System Sciences and has studied in Somalia, Cuba, the UK, Canada, and the U.S.

The event will take place in Science 123 from 6:30 - 8pm this evening.

MY NAKED SELF is an introductory workshop for anyone interested in exploring their gender identity, sexuality, body/self-image, and/or awareness through guided writing exercises, improvisational movement, and encouraged sharing or performance. This workshop is a challenging, inspirational, and empowering examination of who others think we are, who we think we are, and the not-so-simple truth: who we are. No theatre or writing experience necessary! Please bring water and dress comfortably for movement. Feel free to bring a journal or notebook if desired, but we will provide paper and materials for the writing exercises.

Inspired by 20% Theatre Company's ground-breaking, sold-out 2009 production of The Naked I: Monologues From Beyond The Binary by transgender playwright, Tobias K. Davis, The Naked I: Wide Open was created by the company and originally produced in February 2012 to sold-out houses. The Naked I: Wide Open is made up of monologues and short scenes, filled with fresh, sexy, humorous, gut-punching, and unbelievably honest and true stories by transgender/gender non-conforming individuals and allies, exploring gender identity far beyond the land of “male” and “female.” The performance will be followed with a post-show discussion with the artists.
