Peace Scholar Applications Deadline Jan. 31
Augsburg sophomores and juniors with a strong interest in peace and justice issues are invited to apply for the 2013-14 Nobel Peace Prize Scholar Program. Three students will be selected to join a group of a dozen students taking courses in Norway at the International Summer School and the Nansen Dialogue Center. The travel and tuition costs are largely covered by the program. The Peace Scholars also take a leading role in promoting student participation in the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, held each Spring on the Augsburg campus.

Thank You from the CLASS Office
The CLASS Office administered 210 finals during finals week in December. We are grateful to the staff of departments who volunteered to help us including Academic Advising, Institutional Advancement, Athletics, Lindell Library, TRiO Student Support Services, Academic Skills Office, McNair Scholars Program, StepUP, and Campus Activities and Orientation. They assisted with test proctoring, use of offices, test pick ups and test deliveries. Thanks also to faculty who delivered and picked up their exams.

Internship Opportunity in China for Augsburg Grads
Internship Opportunity in China for 2013 Grads and Alums
The United International College (UIC), Augsburg's partner college in Zhuhai, China, is recruiting college graduates for a one year teaching internship with undergraduate students. Graduates in any discipline may apply. Responsibilities include tutoring, reviewing papers and leading co-curricular club activities.
Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and an excellent command of written and spoken English. Internships are available in the following academic departments: English Language Centre; Teaching English as a Second Language; English Literature; Computer Science and Technology; Applied Psychology; Business and Administration; and Public Relations & Advertising. Postage Increase Coming Sunday
The US Postal Service announced postage increases effective January 27, 2013:
• 1st class letter not more than 1 ounce increases from 45 to 46 cents (Forever stamps are good forever, no matter what you paid for them). Additional ounces remain at 20 cents.
• 1st class postcard (up to 4 ¼" x 6") increases from 32 to 33 cents.
• All international letters not more than 1 ounce increase to $1.10 and the international stamp becomes a forever stamp.
• All package prices increase.
• For those of you involved with mail projects, standard mail increases an average of 2.57%.
The Mailroom is located on the main floor of Christensen Center, by the elevator. Regular hours are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Buy stamp singles, books, and rolls. We will sell the new stamps plus 1 cent stamps for those of you left with old value stamps.
Outgoing Mail/Shipping & Receiving is located on the lower level of Christensen Center behind the Copy Center. Regular hours are 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Buy single letter and postcard stamps and mail or ship packages.
Student Volunteers Needed at Hazel Park
A sixth grade teacher at Hazel Park Preparatory Academy (HPPA) on the East Side of St. Paul is looking for a few Augsburg student volunteers to make a semi-regular commitment (could be as little as 1x per month) to work with students at the school (read to them, tutor, etc). The schedule is very flexible.
Although this service would be unpaid, gas cards/bus passes would be provided to help the volunteers get over to HPPA.

Graduate Admissions and the Augsburg MBA Department are hosting an open house Wednesday, January 30th from 4-6 p.m. in OGC 114 with a brief presentation at 5 p.m. detailing the 4+1 MBA.

MFA Creative Writing Mentor Book Reading
Augsburg MFA-Creative Writing Nonfiction Mentor Jack El-Hai will read from his work on January 31 in the Admissions Lounge, ground floor of the Christensen Center. The reading is sponsored by the Augsburg Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, and begins at 6:30 p.m.
Lost Minnesota and The Lobotomist will be for sale, and Jack will be available to sign books. The Lobotomist is print on demand, so if you would like to purchase a copy, please email Laura Forgey at the bookstore at forgey@augsburg.edu by January 23 to make sure we have a copy for you.
Jack El-Hai is a writer of literary journalism and creative nonfiction. His books include The Nazi and the Psychiatrist (Public Affairs, forthcoming), Turbulent Air: A History of Northwest Airlines (University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming), and The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness (Wiley). The Lobotomist is currently in production as a TV series pilot for HBO and was previously adapted as a PBS American Experience television documentary.
Jack's newest project, The Nazi and The Psychiatrist is slated for publication by Public Affairs Books and has recently been optioned for stage and screen by Mythology Entertainment. The book explores the complex relationship between American psychiatrist Dr. Douglas M. Kelley and Nazi war criminal and Hitler's right-hand man Hermann Goering. It is the first to access Kelley's personal and professional papers from the Nuremberg Trial years, which the shrink's family had hidden away for years.
Jack's essays and articles have appeared in The Atlantic, Wired, Scientific American Mind, The History Channel Magazine, American Heritage, and The Saturday Evening Post. Winner of a Minnesota Book Award and a McKnight Artist Fellowship, he is a past president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Bennington College and an undergraduate degree in English from Carleton College.
