Public Safety and Facilities Announcements
Document Shredding
The Facilities Department has scheduled a document shredding company to be on campus the morning of Wednesday, October 24. If you have any confidential materials that you wish to be shredded at that time, please box them up and mark the boxes "to be shredded." Then, submit an online facilities work request no later than Monday, October 22 for our staff to pick up these boxes from your office before the shredding company arrives. If you have any questions, please email me (adamsth@augsburg.edu) or call ext. 1566.
Heating Season
Due to the recent cold snap, the Facilities department has completed the seasonal changeover to heating mode earlier than normal. For spaces that have local control, thermostats should be set to 68 degrees F and left there for the heating season. If you experience abnormally cold temperatures in any space, please do not "crank" the thermostat up. Instead, submit a work request. We appreciate your help in reducing our energy bills!
The Facilities department is currently processing work orders to remove window air conditioners, so please be patient with your requests for removal. If the unit in your area has not been removed or serviced by 11/15/12, feel free to contact us at that time.
Also, additional items for sale will be posted on the Facilities Recycle Bin Moodle site this week. Please check them out if you are looking for some bargains.

Staff Development Series: Managing Time and Tasks at Work

Join us to explore a few different systems for managing time, email, and
priorities during this practical, hands-on session! You will learn about
Stephen Covey's methods for prioritization, as well as David Allen's Getting
Things Done methodology for stress-free productivity. During the session, you
will capture some of the "open loops" in your professional life and explore a
tool for effective prioritization. We will also dive into practical tips for
managing your GroupWise email more effectively and efficiently as well as
explore a few different tools for tracking "to-dos."
About the facilitators:
Rick Gubash works in the CLASS Office where (among many other things) he coaches students on time management and prioritization to guide them to academic success.
Andrea Dvorak is the coordinator for faculty-led programs abroad in the Office of International Programs. She is a practitioner of the Getting Things Done methodology in her own work life as she tracks the comprehensive status of multiple overseas trips at any given time.

Philanthropy Week Starts Today
Attention students, faculty, and staff! Philanthropy Week starts today! Visit Christensen Center all week from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. to play games, win prizes, and get your piggy bank! We are handing out piggy banks to all classes—be sure to Feed your Pig with spare change, throughout the year we'll have Piggy Bank round-ups and the class with the most donors will win a class party on campus! Faculty & staff can "adopt" a piggy from any class year.
Also, be sure to play "Tag It!" all week!

Nabo is offering a new meal replacement special, one meal plan meal per week can be used to purchase the special of the day at Nabo from 1:30 p.m. to close. Hot apple cider is now here. Today the special is Cajun Chicken Pasta with a breadstick and fountain soda.

Presentation by Pasi Sahlberg,Director General of CIMO (in the Ministry of Education) in Helsinki, Finland and author of Finnish Lessons. The event is sponsored by Augsburg College Education Department and the Upper Mississippi Academy.

Dr. Solberg has experience in classroom teaching, training teachers and leaders, coaching schools to change and advising education policy-makers around the world. Dr. Sahlberg has lived and worked in the United States (World Bank in Washington DC) and Italy (European Commission). He is an international keynote speaker and has published over 100 articles, chapters and books, among them "The Fourth Way of Finland" (2011), "Rethinking accountability in a knowledge society" (2010), "Creativity and innovation through lifelong learning" (2009), and "Education Reform for Raising Economic Competitiveness" (2006). He earned PhD from the University of Jyvaskyla (Finland) in 1996. Dr. Sahlberg is a member of the Board of Directors of ASCD and Adjunct Professor at the University of Helsinki and the University of Oulu. The Diamond Way Buddhist Group on campus is excited to host Wolfang Poier from Germany on campus. The program at Augsburg will be about a hour long with an introduction to Buddhism and meditation, a time for questions, and an opportunity to try a guided meditation. Free and open to all.

Focused Conversations: Tuesday and Wednesday
As previously communicated, the third Focused Conversation in the initial series this fall will take place on Tuesday, October 16, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Marshall Room. The session will be led by Ann Garvey, vice president of student affairs, who will talk about the student success/Augsburg Promise initiative.
In addition, we have scheduled a second Focused Conversation on the enrollment plan to accommodate additional participants interested in that topic. The session will again be led by Julie Edstrom, vice president of enrollment management, and is scheduled for Wednesday, October 17, from noon to 1 p.m. in Lindell 301.
Finally, in the initial Focused Conversation on revenue and cost structure with Tammy McGee, vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer, it was noted that periodic updates on that topic would be beneficial. We have also determined that it would be beneficial to add a Focused Conversation on academic programs led by Barbara Farley, vice president of academic affairs and dean of the College. We will be determining an appropriate schedule for future sessions on those topics and will communicate dates, times, and locations via A-mail in the coming weeks.
