Model UN Team Applications Now Being Accepted
Augsburg College's Model United Nations Team is now accepting applications for the 2013 National Model UN Conference, to be held in New York City, this coming March 17-21 (over spring break). The program and club is open to any student at Augsburg who is interested in world politics, diplomacy, or the work of international organizations; however, space on the delegation is limited and students must demonstrate knowledge and strong interest in international relations and the work of the UN. Those selected for the delegation must enroll in the Model UN course (POL 368) in the spring term, and pay a $400 lab fee, which covers the cost of the conference, travel, and hotel in New York. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS ANALYST
The Analyst supports information gathering, analyzing, and reporting needs of the Office of Academic Affairs. The analyst works to ensure accurate collection, management, and reporting of academic affairs data for college reports. Key focus areas include budgeting; data analysis related to academic operations; accreditation; assessment of student learning outcomes; and other areas. The analyst will work collaboratively with institutional research, information technology, accounting, human resources, and other faculty and staff.
MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION (MAE) PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Duties include: MAE coordination, department data management, department website content management, and administration of education continuing studies. This position works closely with the department chair, the administrative assistant, and other faculty and staff. This position serves as a liaison for the MAE program to students and to offices on campus including graduate admissions, the enrollment center, marketing, and event services. This position will hire, train and supervise a graduate student worker.

URGO Academic Year Research Grants Available
URGO Academic Year Research Grants are now available for undergraduate students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. This is a great way to ease into research if you have never done it before, or to continue work on an existing project. Students from all disciplines are invited to apply, and past projects have ranged from biology lab work to theater performance.
Contact a faculty member within your major to discover research in progress that you may be able to join. Alternatively, you can work collaboratively with a faculty member to develop a new project. Once you have a project in mind, work with your mentor to fill out the application found on our website: http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/ under "applications."
Grant winners may receive up to $1,000 for research supplies and/or a student stipend. We are already nearing the limit for awards this year, so do not hesitate to talk with a faculty member and get the ball rolling!

Focused Conversations Monday & Thursday This Week
Focused Conversations around College revenue and costs, enrollment and student success start this week. Please note the date/time change for the enrollment plan discussion; the meeting was rescheduled due to a room schedule conflict. We apologize for any inconvenience due to the this change. If there are people who are interested in this topic but now cannot attend, please let me know (rjohn@augsburg.edu), and we will schedule a second Focused Conversation for this topic.
The conversations will all be held in the Marshall Room:
• 2 to 3 p.m., Tuesday, October 9. Tammy McGee, vice president of finance and administration, will talk about the College's existing revenue and cost structure.
• NEW DATE/TIME: 12 to 1 p.m., Thursday, October 11. Julie Edstrom, vice president of enrollment management, will discuss the enrollment plan currently under development.
• 12 to 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 16. Ann Garvey, vice president of student affairs, will talk about the student success/Augsburg Promise initiative.

Dignity and Empowerment: Women as the Keys to Global Food Security

This international seminar will launch a movement to build new relationships among women leaders, promote new ideas and real-world solutions, and inform policy makers and the public about the need to empower women, who play the most important in food production. Speakers include the former Prime Minister of Norway, Kjell Magne Bondevik; from Norway, Ingrid Stange, the internationally known director of Partnership for Change; and Vigdis Vestad, Norway's prominent human rights expert.

"Faith and the Imagination: The Call to the Arts"
Vocatio Chapel Welcomes Thelma Buckner, Gospel Musician
Wednesday, October 10, at 10:20 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel
Dr. Thelma Battle-Buckner is a vocal gospel singer, inspirational writer, and community leader. While an employee of the University of Minnesota she majored in nutrition and finance. She received her doctorate degree in Theology and was ordained in 1990. As a devoted and active member of the church, Buckner has played many roles and had many responsibilities. She currently serves as Pastor at Gospel Temple in St. Paul.
While reflecting on her life, Dr. Buckner highlights the following accomplishments and experiences of which she is most pleased. First, she musically trained her eight children. Secondly, the development of Piece By Piece Quilt Shoppe, a community based program for children, which has made and distributed over 1,000 quilts to childcare programs, convalescent centers and homeless people. Also, she authored two books; "Color Coded", which is being re-titled "The Battle", and "You Can't Make Me Doubt Him; A Collection of Real Life Miracles in the Everyday Life of an Everyday Woman" and two theatrical productions: "Gospel In Blues Time"; which debuted at the Ordway Music Theatre with prolific artist Doris Hines, and with sister, Luella Battle-Pittman. The production "From Slavery To Freedom: Let Gospel Ring" with the Minneapolis Gospel Sounds ran at the Minneapolis Crickett and Illusion Theatres.
She feels confident in knowing that her "living will not be in vain" as long as she continues to incorporate the biblical verse Proverbs 3:6, which states that "in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy path."

"Long Island Iced Latina" is award winning performer Marga Gomez's hilariously dark memoir of her four years as the only brown girl in a white high school. It's also a testament to her determination to reclaim the Latino culture that she lost. The show is also an intoxicating manifesto for Latinos who can't speak Spanish, suck at Salsa, and suffer from Blonditis. "We're every- where." Gomez claims "And we vote!"
