Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Public Safety Break Announcements

Note: The Library and Athletic Facilities have published operating schedules. Those facilities will open and close according to their published schedules.

1 - Buildings will be unlocked each weekday morning at their normal time. Buildings will remain closed on holidays (12/23, 12/24,12/25,12/26, 1/1, 1/2) and weekends UNLESS there is a scheduled activity or office that needs the building open.

2 - Buildings will close no later than 5 p.m. UNLESS there is a scheduled activity or office that needs the building to remain open. Officers will be making regular rounds through buildings. During break the officers will close a building if, during their rounds, they find it empty. If you leave for the day and believe your building will be empty, please call x1717 and let us know.

3 - Conference rooms, classrooms and labs will remain locked UNLESS there is a scheduled activity or office that needs the space.

4 - If the space you need is locked, and you have a legitimate reason to be in there, please call x1717 and an officer will do their best to assist you. Please have photo ID and show it to the officer. Some officers will be working different shifts over the break and may not have had the opportunity to meet you.

5 - Whenever possible, don't work alone. Ideally, there should always be two or more people in your area. If you are working alone, I encourage you to call x1717 and let us know. We will have officers walk by your area more frequently.

6 - If you see anything suspicious, please call x1717 immediately!

7 - Surface Parking lot general spaces will not require a permit between Dec. 16th and Jan 15th. HOWEVER, all specifically marked spaces such as reserved, meters, handicap etc still require the appropriate permit or money. These spaces will continue to be monitored as well as all fire lane and time restricted zones.

8) Spring parking permit sales will begin the week of Jan. 2nd 2012. Please see the website for further details on specific sales dates. http://www.augsburg.edu/dps/parking_permits.html

General Announcements

Engman Prize, Submissions Due January 27

The John Engman Writing Prize, a literary competition sponsored by Murphy Square and the Augsburg English Department, is awarded each year to Augburg's most promising writers. This year's submission deadline is Friday, January 27th.

Judges of the competition will select up to three winners in each of the categories of fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and screenwriting which is being added as a category this year.

To enter writers must submit the following:

Short Fiction – A complete short story of not more than 15 pages

Creative Non-fiction – One complete piece not longer than 15 pages

Poetry – At least three poems. Poetry entries with fewer than three poems will not be accepted

Screenwriting – Up to 30 pages (either a complete short script or a portion of a longer script, such as the first act of a full-length screenplay)

All writers must be enrolled at Augsburg College and may enter once in each of the four categories, but they may only win a prize in one category. Entries may be submitted electronically or by hand.

Paper entries must include five copies of each work submitted and be accompanied by a cover letter, listing the name of the writer and the titles of the work submitted. Names of writers must not be listed on the works submitted. Paper application cover letters and supporting manuscripts must be delivered to the Humanities/Social Science Department Office, Memorial Hall, 111 by 3p.m. on Friday, January 27. This is not a postmark deadline.

Entries submitted electronically should be sent as attachments to nielsen@augsburg.edu. Specify the genre in the Subject box. Writers submitting in more than one genre should submit separate emails. The body of the email should include the writer's full name and email address and the titles of all pieces submitted.

The prize was named in honor of poet and Augsburg alumnus John Engman who died in 1996. Judges for the contest are English Department faculty members. The judges reserve the right to withhold awards if entries in specific categories are not of winning quality; they may also increase the number of awards in a category that has attracted entries of obvious merit. Winners will be notified in February.

Grade Due Dates for Fall Terms

Fall Rochester grades are due Friday, 23 Dec.
Fall WEC/Grad grades are due Wednesday, 21 Dec.
Fall Day grades are due Wednesday, 28 Dec.

Please note grade due dates are also posted on each program calendar.

Grading information can be found through the following links:
http://www.augsburg.edu/registrar/ then click on Info for Faculty, then Grade Entry Guidelines.

Timely grade submission is important to our students. Most of our WEC and Grad students are on company reimbursement and work under time lines for submitting their tuition claim (which requires a grade for the course). Many of our Day students are dependent on scholarships which require graded coursework for continuance or for application for new monies. Thank you for your efforts to support our students.

Please note, cross-listed courses with Fall Day follow the Day deadlines.
