Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Public Safety Break Announcements

Note: The Library and Athletic Facilities have published operating schedules. Those facilities will open and close according to their published schedules.

1 - Buildings will be unlocked each weekday morning at their normal time. Buildings will remain closed on holidays (12/23, 12/24,12/25,12/26, 1/1, 1/2) and weekends UNLESS there is a scheduled activity or office that needs the building open.

2 - Buildings will close no later than 5 p.m. UNLESS there is a scheduled activity or office that needs the building to remain open. Officers will be making regular rounds through buildings. During break the officers will close a building if, during their rounds, they find it empty. If you leave for the day and believe your building will be empty, please call x1717 and let us know.

3 - Conference rooms, classrooms and labs will remain locked UNLESS there is a scheduled activity or office that needs the space.

4 - If the space you need is locked, and you have a legitimate reason to be in there, please call x1717 and an officer will do their best to assist you. Please have photo ID and show it to the officer. Some officers will be working different shifts over the break and may not have had the opportunity to meet you.

5 - Whenever possible, don't work alone. Ideally, there should always be two or more people in your area. If you are working alone, I encourage you to call x1717 and let us know. We will have officers walk by your area more frequently.

6 - If you see anything suspicious, please call x1717 immediately!

7 - Surface Parking lot general spaces will not require a permit between Dec. 16th and Jan 15th. HOWEVER, all specifically marked spaces such as reserved, meters, handicap etc still require the appropriate permit or money. These spaces will continue to be monitored as well as all fire lane and time restricted zones.

8) Spring parking permit sales will begin the week of Jan. 2nd 2012. Please see the website for further details on specific sales dates. http://www.augsburg.edu/dps/parking_permits.html

Augsburg Dining Service, Good Eating Tip

You don't have to skip holiday parties to maintain a healthy weight, just practice portion control. Here are a few tips to reduce the urge to overeat while still enjoying yourself at any holiday party or buffet:

• Don’t skip meals. This will leave you over hungry and more likely to over-indulge.

• Before leaving for a party, eat a light healthy snack like raw vegetables or a piece of fruit to curb your appetite.

• Scan the buffet first and make a mental plan of what you'd like to try before loading up your plate with foods you may not even really want.

• Start by filling a plate with veggies and salad before going for the entrees and desserts.

• Use smaller plates. The less you put on your plate the less you can eat, smaller plates will help.

• Sit or stand as far away from the buffet table as you can. The closer you are to the food table the more tempting it is to go back for more.

• Eat only when you are hungry and not because food is near. Those calories count too and we tend to forget how much we really had as we nibble along.

• Eat slowly and savor every bite. Try putting your fork down after each mouthful until you are ready for the next one. Or at a party where appetizers are being passes around hold your glass in the hand you normally would eat with.

• Before you go back for seconds, wait 10 minutes and then ask yourself if you're still hungry. If you are, go ahead.

• Watch your liquid calories. There's lots of tasty eggnogs, ciders, wine, hot toddies and the like that go down easy but add up quickly.

• Choose your splurges wisely. If you decide to forgo moderation on a treat or dish you really have to have, cut calories elsewhere or add in some extra activity to your day.

• Bring a healthy dish. This insures there is something you won’t fill guilty about indulging in.

Try this lighter ranch dressing with your veggie trays.
Creamy Ranch Dressing

½ cup non-fat Greek yogurt
¼ cup low-fat buttermilk
¼ cup low-fat mayonnaise
1 clove garlic, minced
½ tsp onion powder
1 Tbsp fresh chives, snipped
1 Tbsp Italian parsley, minced
Dash of Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp lemon juice

Combine ingredients in a bowl and whisk well to combine. Taste for seasoning, adjust and store in sealed container in refrigerator for up to a week.

Billy Mills Event

Billy Mills, 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist in 10,000 Meter run, will present here at Augsburg College on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 7 PM in the Chapel. He is an amazing speaker who motivates and inspires by telling his story. Please join us!! Free and open to everyone!!

Billy Mills was born and raised on the Pine Ridge (Lakota) Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Although Pine Ridge is very rich in culture and spirit, it is continually recognized economically as one of the poorest communities in America with unemployment reaching 80%.

Billy was orphaned by the age of 12 and sent to boarding schools. He graduated from high school at Haskell Indian School. Billy became involved in distance running and earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Kansas. Never winning a major race in track and field or cross country, he continued to show promise by his performances, making NCAA and AAU All-American seven times. Upon graduating from the University of Kansas, Billy was commissioned an officer in the United States Marine Corps., and continued training for the Olympic Team. He made the Olympic Team in two events, the marathon and the 10,000 meter run. He had trained his body, mind, and soul for "Peak Performance." And the world was about to see the greatest upset in Olympic history unfold.

Today Billy is an accomplished businessman, author, and National Spokesperson for Christian Relief Services. As National Spokesperson, he has helped raise over 500 million dollars in cash and in-kind for charities worldwide. He has received five honorary doctorates, and is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Citation, the highest honor that the University of Kansas Alumni Association can bestow upon an individual to acknowledge outstanding achievement for the betterment of mankind. A major motion picture has been made about Billy, titled "Running Brave," and has been a positive influence on many of our American youth. Billy Mills was recognized on several end-of-the-millennium lists, including being chosen as Sports Illustrated’s Athlete of the Century for the state of South Dakota and Runners World Magazine the second greatest Olympic moment. In 2009, his race was chosen by Running Times Magazine as the greatest distance race on the track in the history of the Olympics. He is the only person from the Western Hemisphere to ever win the Olympic 10,000 Meter Run.

Project Homeless Connect

Project Homeless Connect is a one-stop shop model for delivering services to people experiencing homelessness or at risk to become homeless. Twice each year, Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis partner with service providers, businesses, citizens, and faith congregations to bring multiple resources to one central location where people can come to access the services they need.

These services include housing, employment, medical care, mental health care, benefits and legal assistance, eye doctors, haircuts, chiropractic, and dental care. The first of these events occurred on December 14, 2005, at the Basilica of St. Mary. It was a tremendous success, involving 250 volunteers and service providers and serving over 500 men, women, children, and youth experiencing homelessness.

The next event will be held on Monday, December 12, 2011 at Minneapolis Convention Center from 10:00AM to 4:00 PM.
