Apply to Be an AugSem Student Leader Coordinator

Bev Stratton, Director of AugSem, and Sarah Griesse, Dean of Students, are looking for two students experienced in working with first-year Day students—so they should be past Resident Advisors (RAs), Orientation Leaders (OLs), or AugSem Student Leaders (SLs)—to take on a fairly new AugSem Student Leader Coordinator (SLC) position. In this position, SLCs would work in late August to prepare for the fall SL training, and they would help with SL hiring in the spring. In the fall they would work closely with the SLs to help them to work effectively with first-year students and AugSem faculty. The job may begin in January or August, depending on student availability and interest. Interested students should check the HR web site for the posting. The priority deadline is Thursday, 8 December to submit a complete application.

Convener Wanted - "Talking About Race" Book Group

This fall a CTL-funded book group met four times over lunch to discuss Beverly Daniel Tatum's "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" And Other Conversations About Race. Through discussing racial identity development we talked about ways of supporting all our students. Members of the group found our frank and necessary conversations about race helpful personally and professionally. The group has ideas about potential titles for next spring and is open to new members and to reading suggestions. This fall's readers and participants included Andy Aoki, Katie Bishop, Ankita Deka, Jacqui deVries, Amy Gort, Doug Green, Sarah Hedstrom, Garry Hesser, Carla-Elaine Johnson, Vicki Olson, Marissa Machado, Ginny McCarthy, Cindy Peterson, Tim Pippert, Sherron Reese, Andrea Sanow, Bev Stratton, Cassidy Titcomb, Dee Cole Vodicka, and Barbara West.

This term's convener will be on sabbatical in the spring, so we're looking for 1-2 people who would take on that task. Contact Bev Stratton if you're interested in the group (to be put on a mailing list) and particularly if you are willing to convene the group next spring. It's a great opportunity to get to know others on campus and an option for ad hoc "service" for faculty.

Thanks for Thanksgiving

A big thank you to everyone who supported Campus Kitchen this Thanksgiving. We were able to serve a couple hundred traditional meals to neighbors in need, and have enough surplus to contribute potatoes, stuffing, and other goods to the Brian Coyle food shelf to help them reach their goal of distributing over 200 family dinners. And as always, this work brought dozens of students and other volunteers closer to their neighbors and community.

We would like to highlight the following offices for collecting donations among their members: A'viands, the Presidents Office, Marketing and Communication, Social Work, Institutional Advancement, CLASS, IT, Business Administration, HR, Admissions, Physician Assistant Program, and others.

Thank you again. We couldn't do everything we do without your support.

West Side Theater Project Story Circle Dec. 17

I know there are Auggies who live on the West Side--I've met some of you--students, faculty, and staff! If this is you, please consider participating in the creation of the next play about St. Paul's West Side neighborhood.

Saturday December 17, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Baker Community Center
209 W. Page St., St. Paul, 55107

We’re collecting stories about the RIVER and the Environment to inspire our next play. The West Side is bordered on 3 sides by the Mississippi River and West Siders have known rivers across the globe. What does the river mean to you? How has it impacted your life? Do you have stories about the Mississippi or other rivers you have known? Are there other parts of the natural environment that you want to say something about?

Come tell us your stories!

Playwright Al Justiniano, Director Harry Waters Jr and composer Becky Dale will be on hand to listen. What they hear will help them dream up the next WSTP play.

Hope to see you there!
