Crime Alert: Burglary in Foss
October 31 2011: Burglary Reported:
Public Safety was notified on October 29th of a burglary of a room in the Foss building. Signs of forced entry into the area were reported and multiple video cameras were taken. After further investigation, the crime is believed to have happened between the afternoon of Friday October 28th and the morning of Saturday October 29th. If you have any information about this crime, please report to Public Safety Dispatch 612-330-1717 or Minneapolis Police 911.
You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!
Immediately report any suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.
Always lock your individual office door and the suite door whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.
If you misplace or do not have a key, please call x1717 and ask us to come and lock the office. Please wait in the office until we arrive.
Do not prop open doors. If you see a door propped open, close the door and report it to DPS by calling 1717.
Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in locking drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.
Keep your keys on your person at all times.
- Back up your data! Your files can easily be backed up to your network folder or a USB drive. Don't risk losing your notes, research and other work. If you have any questions about the best way to back up your data, talk to your LFC or to Student Computing.

Sustainable Urban Communities, redux
Thursday, March 8, at St. Catherine University
This symposium highlights ACTC students' contributions to the vibrant Twin Cities community through direct study, applied research, and/or community involvement. We consider "sustainable urban communities" to be a broadly inclusive term, and seek a wide representation of student work across all disciplines.

Interested in the I-Term?
This year's I-Term is being offered in Spring 2012 and is OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS!
The I-Term's theme is "Fate of the Earth 101 - Consumption of Food, Fuel and Media in Contemporary U.S. Culture."
This is a three-credit course that features narrative evaluations instead of traditional grading. Students signing up for the I-Term will receive credit for SOC 121 (Intro to Human Society), POL 170 (Law in the U.S.), and ENG 270 (Environmental Literature).
This is a unique class, emphasizing experiential learning and integrated perspectives around a single theme.
If you are interested to learn more, the I-Term faculty (Lars Christiansen, Sarah Combellick-Bidney, and John Harkness) are holding an I-Term Information Session on Wednesday, November 2 from Noon to One p.m. in OGC 100.

Calling For Performers for MLK Convocation
For the 2012 MLK convocation on Monday, January 16th, the MLK committee would like to invite Augsburg students, staff, or faculty to participate through musical, dance, spoken word, or short theatrical performance. All pieces should be about 3 minutes in length and should relate to Martin Luther King, Jr., peace, or social justice in some way.
There will be a meeting of all those interested the week of November 14th. Please stay tuned for further details.

Intramural Soccer
It's that time guys... intramural co-ed soccer starts on Thursday, November 10th, with the first game starting at 9:10pm The first 8 teams will be accepted into the league. We will be accepting rosters until Friday, November 4th at 12pm noon, or until we have 8 teams. Send the emailed roster to Tim Gormley at gormley@augsburg.edu, with the subject of the email 'intramural soccer'.
Please include the following information when sending in rosters:
Team name
Team captains name and phone number
Team members names and student ID numbers
Hurry and get your rosters in and join the fun!
Annual Benefit Enrollment Period
The annual benefit enrollment period will be from November 7 - November 18. Human Resources will be sending out an email to your Augsburg email address and a packet of information to your home later this week with more details. However, in the meantime, please block off your calendar to attend one of the five benefit enrollment sessions:

Campus Box Info for Resident Students
We encourage you to lock your campus box. Personal locks are no longer allowed; please rent one from the mailroom for $2/yr. Although we have not had a problem with mail theft, here are comments I heard near the campus boxes in the first few days of the semester: “I am waiting for a prescription from my doctor...for a debit card...for tickets I ordered.” We don't want there to be any trouble with you getting these important pieces of mail for which you are waiting!

Speech Team Meets Thursday
The Augsburg speech team will have an informal get-together this Thursday, November 3 from 3:00-4:00 in Foss 19B. Come watch videos of actual speech contest events! Learn how you can go to a speech tournament with just a few hours of preparation! If you were on your speech team in high school, you really shouldn't miss this opportunity.

He is the author of What the Music Said, Soul Babies, and Songs in the Key of Black Life, and is co-editor of That's the Joint: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader. He is a regular commentator on NPR and maintains a lively blog at <newblackman.blogspot.com>.
Be The Match - On Campus Wednesday 11/2
Be The Match®, which is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, will be in Christensen Center Wednesday, November 2nd from 10am to 4pm to give you the opportunity to join the Be The Match RegistrySM. You could be the one to save the life of a patient in desperate need, so please consider joining! We are conducting this recruitment drive in honor of and in support of a local 11-year old girl who is need of a marrow transplant in order to survive her diagnosis of a blood cancer.
To make your experience as easy as possible, please:
1. Review the requirements to confirm that you are eligible to join.
2. Bring your driver's license to the drive.
3. Bring the names, phone numbers, mailing addresses and e-mail addresses of two family members or friends who do not live with you nor live with each other. The NMDP will contact these people only if you are identified as a potential match for a patient and we cannot reach you. In other words, we will not solicit to the two people you list on your registration form.
To join the Be The Match RegistrySM, all you need is to:
Be between the ages of 18 and 60.
Be willing to help any patient in need.
Meet health requirements. These conditions would prevent you from joining the Registry:
o Most heart diseases or cancer
o HIV or risk for HIV
o Chronic lung diseases
o Diabetes requiring insulin or diabetes-related health issues (such as kidney, heart, or eye disease)
o Autoimmune/neurological disorders such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis
o HIV, or at risk for HIV
o Hepatitis, or at risk for hepatitis
o Diseases affecting blood clotting or bleeding
o Being an organ or marrow transplant recipient
o Significant obesity

Drawing Installation – Continues TODAY
Stop by the Christensen Center Art Gallery and check out the drawing installation in progress by artist David Wilson. It's fluorescent orange and hard to miss!
David Wilson will be giving two artist talks this week:

Reception in the gallery directly following Nov. 3 talk.
Wilson's exhibition Ocotillo explores the concept of endless drawing. “Open play is essential,” David Wilson asserts about interacting with his installation. “I want the viewer to have fun/to play with the work.” Wilson sets in motion an image that can be carried out indefinitely, even when the drawing activity ends. The possibility and potential for the drawing to literally begin again in the viewer's mind solicits participation from the viewer in the creation of the work. As the fluorescent orange color of the installation saturates the room, the repetition and constant variation create a sense of transformation, a place where both the concrete and fleeting exist together.
David Wilson received his BFA and MFA from the University of California, San Diego. He works in installation, drawing and video, using non-traditional media and approaches, including collaboration and performance.
Free Concert Tickets to Meg Hutchinson
Augsburg College has received 8 free tickets to see Meg Hutchinson in concert at the Cedar Cultural Center, on Saturday, Nov. 12th, 8PM,(doors open at 7 pm). Meg will be the key-note speaker the following day, Nov. 13th, at the Mental Health Education Project, a collaborative effort of the Jewish Community. There will be more information about the free, and open to the public conference at the concert, or e-mail jfcsmpls.org.

Auggies in MIAC Playoffs
The Augsburg volleyball and men's soccer teams are in the MIAC postseason playoffs, with competition beginning on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Auggie volleyball team is the No. 6 seed in the MIAC postseason, and will face No. 3-seed Bethel on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Bethel's Robertson Center in Arden Hills, Minn. Augsburg is 16-11 overall, 7-4 in MIAC play, and has qualified for the MIAC playoffs twice in the last three seasons.
