On Monday, November 29, 2010, a non-student was robbed on the west (20th Ave) side of Luther Hall. The non-student was walking to campus from the Franklin Light Rail Station and was followed by 4 to 6 teens in hooded sweatshirts. The non-student realized he was being followed and began to move quickly toward campus. The robbers pursued the non-student and knocked him to the ground on the west side of Luther, where they robbed him.

If you have any information regarding this crime, and have not already done so, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department or Augsburg's Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by dialing 1717 from an on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from an off-campus phone.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

Powerful Conversations on NSSE

December 16, 2010, OGC 111, 12:00-1:15pm
Active and Collaborative Learning (Velma Lashbrook)

Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions.

Light refreshments will be served.

Buddhist Lama Teaching in Neighborhood Tonight 8pm

Lama Ole Nydahl, one of the most active and exemplary teachers of Tibetan Buddhism, will give a public lecture entitled "Buddhism in the Modern World" at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, 130 Humphrey Center, 301 19th Ave. S, Minneapolis. Admission is $15, and $10 for students.

Augsburg students will be meeting in the lobby of the Christensen Center at 7:45 to walk over to the venue together.

Lama Ole Nydahl, who enjoys skydiving and fast motorcycles, is a modern-day Lama who breaks with convention.

"Recognizing mind to be like space will make us fearless," says Nydahl, "the recognition of that which looks through our eyes and listens through our ears is basically space and not some ‘thing' which has been born, made, created or put together. This realization gives an unshakable state, something that is solid which can be relied upon."

Nydahl distills the essence of Buddhism and delivers it without cultural trappings in a way that is practical for our modern world. He met Buddhism in 1968 while traveling through Nepal on his honeymoon. Nydahl and his wife became the first Western students of H.H. 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, head of the Karma Kagyü School of Tibetan Buddhism. At the request of their teacher, the Nydahls returned to their native Denmark to begin teaching Diamond Way Buddhism in the West. Since then, Nydahl has spent nearly 40 years teaching Buddhism around the globe, visiting a new city virtually every other day. The Diamond Way Buddhist Center of Minneapolis is part of an international network of more than 600 meditation centers directed by Lama Ole Nydahl, and operating under the spiritual guidance of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje. These centers offer authentic Buddhist teachings and effective meditation instruction to lay people.

Diamond Way Buddhist Center, at 1701 W. Lake St. in Minneapolis, offers free public meditation on Sundays at 5:45 p.m., Tuesdays at 7:45 p.m. and Wednesdays at 7:45 p.m. For more information, see www.diamondway.org/minneapolis, call 612.825.5055 or email pr-mpls@diamondway.org.

5 Named to All-MIAC Football Squads

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College wide receiver Muneer Al-Hameed (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) and tight end Josh Pronschinske (SR, Fountain City, Wis./Cochrane-Fountain City HS) earned first-team recognition on the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football squads, it was announced recently.

Auggie quarterback Marcus Brumm (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) was named to the All-MIAC second team, and linebacker Adam Mead (SR, St. Francis, Minn.) and defensive back Dane Bates (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention recognition, with Mead also being named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Al-Hameed earned All-MIAC honors for the third time in his career, after earning All-MIAC second-team honors each of the last two seasons. Pronschinske earned All-MIAC first-team honors for the second straight year, while Brumm and Mead earned all-conference honors for the second time, after each earned All-MIAC first-team honors last year. The honor for Bates was the first of his career.

Al-Hameed proved his versatility this season, as he transitioned from wide receiver to quarterback for the final three games of the season after Brumm was lost for the season due to injury. As a quarterback, Al-Hemeed completed 17-of-34 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns in three starts.

As a wide receiver, Al-Hameed led the MIAC in receptions per-game (7.00), with 70 catches for 832 yards (third-best in the MIAC in overall statistics) and five touchdowns this season. In his 39-game career, Al-Hameed finished with 258 receptions for 3,089 yards and 18 touchdowns -- the reception total the second-most in school history, the yardage total third-best and the touchdown total sixth-best.

Pronschinske led the conference's tight ends in receiving for the second straight year, with 43 catches for 463 yards and four touchdowns. His 4.78 receptions per-game ranked eighth-best in the league in overall statistics, while his 51.4 receiving yards per-game ranked 10th-best. In his 26-game career, Pronschinske finished with 85 catches for 911 yards and six touchdowns.

Brumm suffered a season-ending injury seven games into the season, but his passing totals still ranked him among the top quarterbacks in the MIAC. His 191 completions and 2,161 passing yards were both second-most among conference players in overall statistics. His 326 passing attempts were the most among MIAC players, and his 18 passing touchdowns were tied for second-most.

In his 17 career games as an Auggie, Brumm already ranks third in school history in career pass completions (411), while ranking sixth in career passing attempts (762), fifth in career passing yardage (4,679) and fifth in career passing touchdowns (31).

Mead finished second among all MIAC players in total tackles with 91 (39 solo), including 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, five pass breakups, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. He had five games with double-digit tackle totals this season, including a 16-tackle effort in a win over Martin Luther on Sept. 11.

In his 37-game career, Mead finished with 317 total tackles (133 solo), just the second Auggie in the last decade to record 300 or more tackles (Mike Matson had 355 from 2003-06). Mead also recorded 20.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, 11 pass breakups, one interception, a blocked kick, five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries in his career.

Mead was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team for the second straight year. As a part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative, members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Bates was sidelined midway through the season with a hand injury, but was able to claim 49 tackles (24 solo) in seven games this season, including a tackle for loss, three pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. In his 33-game career, Bates finished with 139 tackles (68 solo), one interception, seven pass breakups, three tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles.

Under sixth-year head coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 4-6 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play in 2010.
