Teaching and Technology Tapas

The IT Liaisons for Computing (LFCs) have been working to redesign our traditional technology training efforts. We were interested in developing ways to introduce new technologies that can be integrated into the effective teaching and learning practice of busy faculty and staff. Our answer was tapas.

Tapas are small plates of delicious food which can be eaten as appetizers or combined to form a meal shared with friends. Similarly, our Teaching and Technology Tapas are tasty bite-sized technology tips which will be presented by several IT staff in 3 to 5 minute segments. You can drop by for just a few topics or stay to experience an entire workshop. Please join us for:

"Teaching and Technology Tapas: Web Browser Tools and Tips"
Thursday, November 18 from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Christensen Center Cedar Room

About the Workshop
Navigating and utilizing information on the Internet has become a ubiquitous task in our daily work, yet learning how to best leverage tools of a web browser can often be overlooked. Our Browser Tapas menu will offer a wide assortment of tools and tasty tips to help you leverage your browser in powerful ways.

The presentation will be informal so please feel free to come and go as your schedule allows - we've designed the program with this in mind! Content is appropriate for users with all levels of computing experience.

We look forward to seeing you!

ENL 290 - Explorations in Language Theory

Please consider taking, and advising students to take, an exciting course next term, Professor Harkness's ENL 290 Explorations in Language Theory, subtitled: Words and the World

Does language affect or merely reflect how we see and understand the world? For example, do languages with only two color terms see the world only in black and white? Why does language sometimes impede rather than enhance our understanding of the world? What makes some political and commercial language so seductive and dangerous? These and other topics will animate our discussion and research as we explore the relationships between language, perception, culture and the world.

Questions? Contact harkness@augsburg.edu.

Dogsburg College Working Group

Please join us for the second meeting of the Dogsburg College Working Group. We want to continue our discussion of strategies to change the rules at Augsburg so that dogs will be allowed on campus. Anyone interested in helping, or just hearing what's going on, should attend. Any change in policy needs to address the health and safety concerns of the entire community. It's possible to have a pet-friendly policy that addresses those concerns, but any discussion of a change in policy needs to include opposing views. Whatever your thoughts about dogs on campus, please join us.

Those who have collected signatures on our petitions are asked to return these. If you'd like to sign the petition, or collect signatures, please come to the meeting.

Next Monday, November 22, 2010 at 5:00 p.m., in the Christensen Center Fishbowl. For more info, join our facebook page: Dogsburg College.

Great American SmokeOut TODAY

Today, if you are a smoker you can help create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by putting down your tobacco and/or making a plan to go tobacco free.

What are some of the health benefits over time when smokers quit? Here are just a few to think about:

*20 minutes after quitting: your heart rate and blood pressure drop
*12 hours after quitting: the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal
*2 weeks to 3 months after quitting: your circulation improves and your lung function increases
*1 year after quitting: the excess risk of coronary heart disease is 1/2 that of a smoker.

Based on data collected by the US Center for Disease Control (CDC), it is estimated that adult male smokers lose an average of 13.2 years of life and adult female smokers lose 14.5 years of life because of smoking. Given the many diseases smoking can cause, it can steal your quality of life long before you die. Smoking can limit your activities by making it harder to breathe, get around, work or play.

For more info on quitting smoking, check out the American Cancer Society website at www.cancer.org or call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707. Also on Tuesday 11/23 from 12 - 2 pm a representative from Quit Plan will be tabling in Christensen Center and will be available with additional resources and/or to answer questions you may have about smoking cessation.

Climate Change Researcher Speaks TODAY

Climate Change: Bridging the Gap between Scientific and Public Opinion

Presentation by Dr. Eric Grimsrud
Thursday, November 18, 2010
Immanuel Lutheran Church St. Paul, MN
7-8:30pm Program and questions
8:30-9pm Refreshments

Free and open to the public!

With a basic level of understanding of the science, we will be better

change.

This presentation will increase public understanding concerning all
aspects of the climate change debate -from "is it really occurring"
to "what must we do to solve it" — by providing a readily
understandable summary of both the scientific and public views on
this subject and attempting to bridge the gaps that presently exist
between them.

About the presenter: Eric Grimsrud graduated from St. Olaf College,
Northfield, Minnesota, and received a PhD in Chemistry at the University
of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1970. He has been a teacher and research
scientist at several universities and was a Professor of Chemistry
at Montana State University, Bozeman, for 29 years. He has been an
active participant in the field of atmospheric chemistry for more than 35
years.
