Developing a Learning-Focused Syllabus
November 8, 7:30-9:00 am, OGC 103
The third session of our Foundational Series on Student Learning closely examines one of the major products of instructional design the course syllabus. You will explore how to write a syllabus that communicates how the course is structured to achieve meaningful learning outcomes and clarifies how students can successfully accomplish course objectives. To get the most out of this workshop, bring a syllabus that you intend to use next term and look for ways you can improve it.
Facilitator: Diane Pike, Sociology.

CTL Night at the Theatre
The Learned Ladies
Saturday, November 13, 2010, 7:00 pm
The Center for Teaching and Learning invites Augsburg faculty and staff to attend and bring a guest to the Theatre Department's production of The Learned Ladies on November 13th at 7:00 pm in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater.
The great comic genius Molière wrote The Learned Ladies in 1672, a year before his death, and it is considered one of his mature masterpieces. In this play, a family is thrown into disarray when the mother becomes fixated on an intellectual charlatan. The play evolves into a hilarious portrayal of the intellectual perversions sometimes seen in the world of academia (and elsewhere), when genuine quest for knowledge becomes replaced by pseudo-intellectuality, pretention, inflated self-importance, and power-mongering. This sophisticated satire sparkles with wit, ridicules hypocrisy, and . . . reveals that human folly has not diminished during the past three hundred years.
Attendees are invited to a dessert reception and discussion immediately following the production in the Foss Concourse area. Director Martha Johnson, along with student actors from the show, will be part of a discussion during the dessert reception. Please join us for this event.
A limited number of free tickets to this showing will be available to the first faculty and staff contacting Sarah Hedstrom at hedstrom@augsburg.edu .

Powerful Conversations on NSSE
Tuesday, November 23, 12:00-1:15, Century Room (Note Room Change)
Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. The remaining sessions are scheduled as follows:
November 23, 2010, Century Room Level of Academic Challenge (Amy Gort)
December 16, 2010, OGC 111 Active and Collaborative Learning (Velma Lashbrook)
February 17, 2011, OGC 100 Student-Faculty Interaction (Lori Peterson)
March 24, 2011, OGC 100 Enriching Educational Experiences (Lori Brandt Hale)
April 21, 2011, OGC 100 Supportive Campus Environment (Ann Garvey)
Light refreshments will be served.

"Here I Walk" November 10 and 11
Interested in pilgrimage? Interested in meeting some modern pilgrims? Then the upcoming "Here I Walk" presentations are for you.
On the morning of August 22, 2010, Andrew and Sarah Wilson left the Augustinian priory in Erfurt, Germany, taking the first steps of a thousand-mile pilgrimage to Rome. The Wilson's followed roughly the same path that the 27-year old friar, Martin Luther, trod 500 years earlier.
The Wilsons, both of whom are Lutheran pastors and scholars, will present "Here I Walk" at the Augsburg College Founders Day Reformation Lectures, November 10 and 11, in Hoversten Chapel.
Wednesday, November 10, at 7:00 p.m.: "Pomegranates, Passes, and Popes: A Kinetic Perspective on Luther's Trip to Rome" (with slide show).
Thursday, November 11, at 10:00 a.m.: "What Has Erfurt to Do with Rome? Ecumenism as Pilgrimage" (followed by Augsburg College Chapel).
Lectures are open to the public; admission is free. More information at www.augsburg.edu/foundersday and at www.hereiwalk.org.
Mississippi River Stories
Join the students of POL 241: Environmental and River Politics in the lobby of the Christensen Center from noon until 2:30 on Wed., Nov. 3, to hear their stories about their time on the Mississippi River in August, and learn about the many ways in which we are all connected to the Mississippi River. The students have produced a sizable map of the river that will provide the setting for their poster and video presentations. These touch on topics such as endangered freshwater mussels, the Clean Water Act, macroinvertebrates, bald eagles, E. coli, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Hidden Ghost Brigade, man-eating mosquitoes, a field guide to plants and birds, canoe surfing on Lake Pepin, Disney show tunes, a horse skull, the Farm Bill, the Prairie Island nuclear power plant, and much, much more.
Haunted Hall featuring Dia de los Muertos
On November 2 from 7:00-10:00pm, Residence Life will be hosting a cross cultural celebration including both Día de Los Muertos traditions as well as American Halloween traditions in Anderson Hall. There will be a Haunted House, a Día de Los Muertos altar, information provided about the altar and other aspects of Día de Los Muertos, and free food! You are invited to share in remembering your loved ones who have passed by bringing something in to place on the altar (please be respectful). The event is free, but an ID will be required for entrance. You are welcome to come in costume!

The first-Wednesday-of-the-month gatherings support our commitment to building community and practicing common work. They are an opportunity to get to know one another, exchange ideas, and collaborate in new ways. We hope you will invite your colleagues and plan to join us!
The Guerrilla Girls Are Coming
In the mid-eighties, a group of women artists took to the streets (with clever and politically devastating posters) to protest the lack of work by women artists and artists of color in museums. Working anonymously to expose sexism and racism in the art world, these women adopted the names of famous female artists and wore gorilla masks to protect themselves from the angry art world elite. Calling themselves The Guerrilla Girls, they have taken their activism from the U.S. to Canada, Japan, Ireland, Germany, and elsewhere - and have expanded their repertoire to include an attack on sexism and racism in Hollywood as well as in global politics.
And now, The Guerrilla Girls are coming to Augsburg! Please join us on Friday, November 5, at 5pm in the Chapel for a discussion/lecture/performance with Guerrilla Girl, Frida Kahlo. T-shirts, books, and posters will be on sale before and after the performance, with a book-signing after the performance, as well. The performance is free and open to all.
Limited spaces are also available for a special "Aestheticize Your Activism" workshop for students on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 10am-noon. If you are interested, please contact nathanso@augsburg.edu.
For more information about The Guerrilla Girls: http://www.guerrillagirls.com/
Thru Another's Lens - Wednesday, November 3
The Luther Hall/Oren Gateway Center (LOGC) ResLife Staff and the Department of Residence Life is beginning a safe dialogue series for community members with the goals of (1) creating awareness and knowledge around issues of human diversity and (2) contemplating how students, staff, and faculty can take action for social justice within their own communities and in the world. This series is entitled "Thru Another's Lens."
There will be 7 sessions in this series with one taking place approximately each month from November to April. The series will be one of single-issue focus, meaning a particular session will focus on oppression dynamics in one of the following social identity categories: class, disability/nondisability, gender, race & ethnicity, religious/spiritual identities, and sexual orientation.
The kick off to this series will occur on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. This first session will look to develop a common conceptual understanding of oppression dynamics, broadly, allowing the series to take single-issue focus for the rest of the academic year. Basically, the first session on November 3 will set a foundation for continued conversations; however, please keep in mind that this series is constructed so that people can come to sessions of interest and not others.
So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeaways that you can apply, then come join us!
If you have any questions, please contact Will O'Berry at oberry@augsburg.edu or a member of the LOGC ResLife Staff.
Free sunglasses as well as dessert will be provided for attendees!
