September is National Recovery Month

This year is the 21st annual Recovery Month observance by the U.S. Department of health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA), and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).

Recovery Month serves to educate the public on how alcohol and drug addiction is a national health issue, a treatable illness, and that recovery is possible. Recovery Month highlights the benefits of treatment for not only the affected individual, but for their family, friends, workplace, and society as a whole. Educating the public reduces the stigma associated with addiction and treatment. Accurate knowledge of the disease helps people to understand the importance of supporting treatment programs, those who work within the treatment field, and those in need of treatment.

Many events and programs are scheduled throughout Minnesota, and the country, in September. For activities in Minnesota, visit www.minnesotarecovery.org/events/nrm.html. Augsburg College is hosting the Spirituality Breakfast on September 16th.

Throughout the month, the StepUP® Program will provide a fact, meditation, or other recovery-related tidbit.

Laundry Room Update

Over the summer, the laundry rooms in Urness, Mortensen, Anderson, and Luther halls all received a fresh paint job. There was also new furniture purchased for the laundry rooms in Urness and Mort, and new washers and driers were installed in all of the laundry rooms to accommodate our new free laundry program! Any soap may be used in these machines, but high efficiency detergent works best. Please do your part to help keep our new laundry rooms looking new!

Change to Classroom Trash and Recycling Procedure

Starting fall semester, all trash and recycling receptacles will be removed from classrooms and some meeting rooms throughout campus. Larger containers will be located in strategic hallway or central locations to make the disposal of refuse as easy as possible. Centralizing trash and recycling containers will make recycling and waste disposal more efficient and cost effective here at Augsburg College. Please place your trash and recycling in the appropriate containers at the trash/recycling station nearest to your classroom or meeting room on the way out of the building.

The initiative is being implemented by Custodial Services and Facilities Management in the hopes that it will increase consciousness of the recycling program and prevent commingling of trash and recyclable materials. This practice has been successful at other colleges like University of Minnesota in Bemidji and also at Macalester College.

Please take care to place items in the correct receptacle (for information on what can be recycled, visit http://www.augsburg.edu/green/rrr.html). Thank you for your cooperation and contribution to Augsburg's efforts to promote green practices.

Deb Hutchison's Last Day

Deb Hutchison is retiring from her post in the English Department Office. We will miss her. Deb has been our right arm, providing unflagging support and unflappable problem-solving, not to mention good humor and some treats. Though Deb wants to slip away quietly, you are welcome to come to Memorial 221A today, her last day, between 8:30 and 2 pm to say goodbye. We wish her well.

Fall Play Auditions 11/13, 11/14

Fall Main Stage Theater Auditions, September 13 - 14

Casting: 5 – 6 female roles; 6-7 male roles

The Augsburg Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for its fall main stage production, The Learned Ladies, by Molière, directed by Martha Johnson. Auditions will be held in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater, Foss Center, Monday, September 13 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and Tuesday, September 14 from 3:30-6:00. An audition sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door in the Atrium of the Foss Center.

All Augsburg students are welcome to audition! Copies of the play The Learned Ladies have been placed on reserve in the library under Martha Johnson's name. Audition monologues are located and at the Theater department desk in Foss Center, and they are also available in the Theater Arts Department public folder on Augnet. Please choose and carefully prepare 2 monologues from those provided. It is recommended that you read the entire play in order to have a sense of the tone of the piece and the nature of the characters.

Call-back auditions will be held Wednesday, September 15, from 6:30-10:00 p.m. Rehearsals will begin September 20, and performance dates are November 5 – 14.

Description of The Learned Ladies:

The great comic genius Molière wrote The Learned Ladies in 1672, a year before his death, and it is considered one of his mature masterpieces. In this play a family is thrown into disarray when the mother becomes fixated on an intellectual charlatan. The play evolves into a hilarious portrayal of the intellectual perversions sometimes seen in the world of academia (and elsewhere), when genuine quest for knowledge is replaced by pseudo-intellectuality, pretention, inflated self-importance, and power-mongering. "This sophisticated satire sparkles with wit, ridicules hypocrisy and…reveals that human folly has not diminished during the past three hundred years."

McAteer to go to White House on Monday

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/9/8/whoc090810.aspx?path=whockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College women's hockey head coach Michelle McAteer will be heading to the White House on Monday, as part of a recognition ceremony for her alma mater's national championship squad.

McAteer, who spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota-Duluth before accepting the Augsburg head coaching job in April, will be honored in Washington, D.C., along with the rest of the Bulldog women's hockey team, which claimed the NCAA Division I national title in 2010.

The Bulldogs will be among numerous Division I national title teams from the past school year that will be honored by President Obama at the White House on Monday. According to a story in Wednesday's Duluth News-Tribune, the Bulldogs will fly to Washington, D.C., at 6 a.m. on Monday and be honored at the White House at 4 p.m. The team will return to Minnesota on Tuesday morning. The story noted that 20 members of the team, along with coaches and the school's chancellor, will be in attendance at the ceremony. It's the fifth time UMD's women's hockey team has appeared at the White House.

McAteer spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with Minnesota-Duluth, helping to lead the team to the NCAA Division I Frozen Four in both seasons, as well as this season's national championship, the fifth in school history. She also served as a graduate assistant coach at UMD during the 2003-05 seasons.

Prior to returning to UMD, McAteer spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach with the Vaughn Flames, a Canadian Women's Hockey League team in Toronto, and served as an assistant coach at Harvard University from 2005-07. The Crimson advanced to the NCAA national tournament in both of her seasons at Harvard.

A native of Scarborough, Ontario, McAteer was a member of UMD teams that won national titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003, while also winning Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) regular-season titles in 2000 and 2003, and WCHA playoff titles in 2000, 2001 and 2003.

Looking for a Dutch Language Tutor

I'm looking for a tutor to assist me in learning Dutch, starting at a beginning/conversational level. One to two times a week would be ideal, and the ability to meet on campus would be a plus as well. The scheduling is extremely flexible. This would be a great job for a novice tutor looking for experience teaching language, or someone hoping to pick up quick money for an hour or two of "work" a week!

If you're interested, email brightk@augsburg.edu with your availability & rates.
