Wednesday, Feb. 17: Speaking of Scholarship

Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend this week's Speaking of Scholarship presentations. Students Emily Merhar ('09, Art), Jessica Fanaselle & Taylor Norman (English) present their 2009 URGO Summer Research!

Wednesday, Feb 17
12:15-1:15 p.m.
OGC 100
Hors d'oeuvres served

Emily Merhar, Art
"Contemporary Ceramic Dishware with Terra Sigillata, Influenced by Cedar Avenue"

Last summer I connected the process of creating art with the experience of living in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. My research had two purposes: (1) to learn the terra sigillata (terra sig) method of sealing pottery and (2) to create ceramic pieces reflecting the unique cultural diversity of our East African neighbors on Cedar Avenue. My observations of everyday occurrences as well as visits to local stores, restaurants and mosques inspired the colorants, texture and decorative effects I used in creating terra sig-sealed dishware sets. Mentor: Dr. Robert Tom (Art)

Jessica Fanaselle & Taylor Norman, English
"Digitizing Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac: Recreating an Undergraduate Research Experience"

It has been our ongoing goal since May of 2009 to make researching simpler for undergraduate students, and in the process understand how students research. To this end we created three different online versions of Part One of Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac, linking selected elements to the newly-digitized Leopold archives. We tracked the students’ movements in the online texts and asked them questions before and after reading to determine which version was most helpful. This presentation will focus on our experiences in the Leopold archives (in Madison, WI), the creation of the three hypertext versions of ASCA, and the results from the first group of students using our online versions. Mentor: Dr. Colin Irvine (English)
