Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Crime Alert: Vehicle Stolen From 21st Ave

On Tuesday, October 27, 2009, a student reported their vehicle stolen from 21st Ave, near OGC. The vehicle, a dark green Honda Accord, was parked at approximately 8:30 pm on 10/26. The vehicle was discovered missing shortly after 4:00 pm on 10/27.

The owner recently lost their keys, attached to an Augsburg lanyard, while downtown. There was no broken glass on the ground where the vehicle had been parked. The lost keys may or may not be a factor in this incident.

If you have any information regarding this crime, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department or Augsburg's Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by dialing 1717 from an on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from an off-campus phone.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!
- Never leave your keys in your car.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running.
- Always keep your car keys on your person. This is especially important if you have a remote unlocking device for your car. If a thief is able to take the remote unlocking device for your car, they simply need to walk through our parking lots and press the button until they see the lights flash on your vehicle.
- Don't leave valuable visible in your vehicle. Where possible, move them to the trunk before you arrive at your destination. Better yet, leave valuables at home.
- Immediately report suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.

General Announcements

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

We are winding down to the last few days of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Yesterday, Mixed Blood presented a play called "Theory of Mind" here at Sateren Auditorium. The play highlights a young man with Asperger's Syndrome. Bill is a college-bound seventeen year-old, equipped with scholastic brilliance, but low emotional intelligence; keen self-awareness, yet an inability to read social cues; and a charming directness. He is also uncertain about relationships, anxious about dating, and prone to taking everything he hears literally. His outing with a girl from his school becomes a memorable, insightful look at tugs, shifts and about-faces found on the autism spectrum. I encourage you to attend the play if you were unable to see it here. Contact Mixed Blood Theatre for times and locations.

Two new government studies indicate about 1 in 91 children have autism disorders — higher than a previous U.S. estimate of 1 in 150.
The new estimate would mean about 673,000 American children have autism. Previous estimates put the number at about 560,000.

Autism Treatment Acceleration Act of 2009 - Federal Autism Insurance Reform (S. 819, H.R. 2413)
In his Presidential campaign statement on Autism Spectrum Disorders, then-Senator Barack Obama committed to bringing autism insurance reform to our entire nation. His statement put forth that Obama and Biden "will mandate insurance coverage of autism treatment and will also continue to work with parents, physicians, providers, researchers, and schools to create opportunities and effective solutions for people with ASD."

In an effort to put his words into action President Obama has asked Illinois Senate colleague Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), along with Senator Robert Casey (D-PA) and Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) to introduce comprehensive autism legislation, including a section addressing broad based federal autism insurance reform. The bill in the House (H.R. 2413) has been introduced by Representatives Mike Doyle (D-PA), Chris Smith (R-NJ), Eliot Engel (D-NY), and Hank Johnson (D-GA).

The "Autism Treatment Acceleration Act of 2009" (ATAA) contains a total of twelve sections, each putting forth a different program for autism. A key feature of the bill is Section 12, which contains the provisions for federal reform of autism insurance coverage. If passed, Section 12 will require all insurance companies across the country to provide coverage for evidence-based, medically-necessary autism treatments and therapies.
