AAC Action Summary Sept. 2009

The Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) met on the 14th and 28th of September. Once minutes are approved, they will be posted on the Faculty Senate Moodle page. In addition, I will send out summaries of the AAC actions.

The AAC is experimenting with a new schedule and process. The AAC agendas are being distributed on the Tuesday before the upcoming meeting. To facilitate this distribution, proposals need to be submitted on Monday before the AAC meeting to ensure that it is included on the next agenda. The AAC members are using noodle as a tool to post questions for the proposal author. A member of AAC will contact the proposal author for clarification prior to the AAC meeting.

Please keep in mind that the catalog is being revised this year. For proposed changes to be included in the new catalog, proposals need to be submitted Feb. 1, 2010 for the Feb. 8, 2010 meeting.

AAC Meeting Date      Proposals Due

10/26/09       10/19/09

*Deadline for submission of proposals for new catalog

The following policies were approved:
1) 13 Credit Limit Catalog Language
A proposal was made to change the catalog language on page 56 to read:
A major at Augsburg shall require no more than 13.0 credits from any one academic department. The Academic Affairs Committee may amend this credit maximum in support of industry or professional accreditation standards. Students may complete non-required electives in the department beyond the 13.0 credit limit.

What does this change mean? In the past, students were not able to count more than 13 credits from their major department towards graduation even if they had met all other graduation requirements. The old policy meant that some students needed to take more than 32 credits to graduate. Now students will be able to take electives in their major area if they choose and count them towards the 32 credit graduation total.

2)Residence
A proposal was made to adjust the residency requirements for students who transfer to and graduate from Augsburg. The old policy was that 7 of the last 9 credits be from Augsburg with at least 9 Augsburg credits overall. The proposal changed the policy to requiring 6 of the last 8 credits from Augsburg with at least 8 Augsburg credits overall.

What does this change mean? The number of 9 overall credits for residency was developed with students typically took 9 credits per year (4 in fall, 1 in J-term, 4 in spring) and represented requiring on full year of Augsburg credits. Now a full year at Augsburg is typically 8 credits. In addition to the residency requirements, all students need to complete all of their major, minor and graduation requirements.

Please send questions or comments to Amy Gort (gort@augsburg.edu)

Book Orders due October 15

This year the bookstore is requesting book orders by October 15th. While this may have seemed like a very early deadline, it is part of an effort to provide more used books for our students as well as pay higher prices for their used books.

Turning your book order in promptly allows the bookstore ample time to source as many used books as possible in order to offer the best value and save the students money. Since many campuses nationwide source from the same wholesale company, it is critical we get your order in on time.

Knowing early on what books are going to be used for the following semester means we can pay higher prices at buyback (up to 50% of what the student paid for the book) and source the books from used book distributors.

Because of your cooperation last year we paid students over $206K in buyback. However, we have a tremendous opportunity as this was $87K less than the amount we paid the previous year.

The faculty and staff at Augsburg College play a significant role in the success of this endeavor by getting the book orders in early. Final exam week last May we had received 65% of the book requests. With your help, we look forward to do even better this semester.

We are asking for Spring Day/Winter WEC book orders by October 15th and anticipate having 95% of the book orders in hand before finals week. Again, this may seem early, but please remember, the earlier the book requests are in, the better the outcome for our students.

Upon this due date, we will share with you, a list of book orders still outstanding so we can make sure that no book orders were missed as well as assist you in getting your orders placed.

Finally, effective in 2010, the Higher Education Opportunity Act will go into affect. One portion of this act states that institutions of higher education are to inform students on how they can save money on textbooks (including used books, cash back programs, etc.) at the time of registration. Submitting your book orders promptly, will assist in ensuring our campus is in compliance to this portion of the HEOA bill.

Once again, we would like to truly thank you for your help and cooperation in trying to keep costs down for our students. The solution to high textbook prices is faculty, staff and bookstores working together. We cannot meet these objectives without your help.

If you need any more information, please give myself or Alissa Nollan a call,(612.359.6492), email me at forgey@augsburg.edu or stop in the bookstore anytime.

Metropasses for Faculty and Staff on Sale Now

Metropasses are now available for faculty and staff. At $38.00 per month they are at a substantial discount compared to the normal retail value. Bus fares without discount are $1.75 each way non-rush hour, $2.25 during rush hours and $3.00 for express buses. Even if one only comes to campus 3 times a day the cost of transportation for a month would range from $42 to $72 a month without a discount. If one is a full time commuter coming to campus 5 days a week the Metropass still saves money even if the commuter doesn't use the pass during the summer. Using the pass only 10 months of the year the annual cost averaged for 10 months is $45.60 compared to the per ride cost would range from $94.5 to $162.00.

Order your Metropass card as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition to the new pass. There will be a 2 -3 week delay between the time the application is filled out and the time the new Metropass cards are delivered. Temporary pass cards will be available to allow applicants to continue bus use until their new passes arrive. Fill out a Metropass application at the Enrollment service counters at Sverdrup 100 as soon as possible. All Augsburg employees working 20 hours per week or greater are eligible to participate in the Metropass program. Participants must sign up for the pass for a contract year that begins this September 1st and goes through August 31, 2010. The cost of the pass is $38.00 per month and it will be automatically deducted (pre-tax) from participants pay. Each participant has the opportunity to renew their card during the last month of the contract year.

The Go-To cards are quicker to use on bus and trains and they also eliminate the need to go and purchase a monthly card at the service counter every month. The Go-To cards are good for light rail and buses, every day, all day including trips to some of the outlying suburbs. Riders will have to provide additional cash to the driver for exceptionally long commutes outside the 7 county metro area. Travel using bus companies other than Metro Transit are not included in this program. Participants must agree to participate for the contract year, allow their I.D. picture to be used on the Go-To card and participants must return the card to Human Resources when their employment at the college ends. The cash value cards will still be on sale at the Enrollment counter with the same 50% discount as before. If you need more information please call Tom Ruffaner @ Ext. 1641.

Brumm named MIAC Player of Week

Brumm named MIAC Football Co-Offensive Player of Week
http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2009/10/12/fb101209.aspx?path=football

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College quarterback Marcus Brumm (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

In Augsburg's 31-28 victory over Carleton on Saturday, Brumm contributed 368 yards of total offense -- completing 19-of-31 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 162 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns, a 7-yard run in the first quarter and a 77-yard rush in the third quarter.

The 162 rushing yards was the most for an Augsburg player in a single game since Marcus LeVesseur rushed for 181 yards in a 2004 game against St. Olaf. Augsburg produced 510 yards of total offense in the game, including 304 rushing yards -- the most rushing yards for the pass-oriented Augsburg offense in a single game since 2004.

A transfer from Division II Minnesota State-Mankato, Brumm is currently averaging 340.4 yards of total offense per-game -- a total tops among MIAC players in overall statistics by 87 yards per-game over the second-place total. He is also leading the conference in passing in overall games, with a 295.0 yards-per-game average. In conference games-only, Brumm also has league highs of 328.3 total offense yards per-game and 262.0 passing yards per-game.

Brumm was named MIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week with Gustavus quarterback Jordan Becker, who threw for 310 yards and five touchdowns in the Gusties' 34-33 win over Pacific Lutheran.

Augsburg, now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in MIAC play, travels to face Concordia-Moorhead this Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.

Haglund named MIAC Athlete of Week

Haglund named MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of Week
http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2009/10/13/mcc101209.aspx?path=mcross

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College's Brent Haglund (SR, Fridley, Minn.) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday by the conference office.

Haglund placed third out of 192 runners with a time of 25:33.8 over 8,000 meters at the Lucian Rosa Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. on Saturday. Haglund led the Auggies to a second-place team finish, their highest team finish since 2006, as he was the second collegiate runner to cross the finish line.

Haglund's time of 25:33.8 was 20 seconds faster than his time at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational and just 20 seconds shy of his personal-best and school-record time of 25:15.27, which he posted at the 2008 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational.

Haglund and the Auggies return to action on Saturday (10/17) when they travel to La Crosse, Wis. to take part in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational as their final tune-up before the MIAC Championships on Oct. 31 at the Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn.
