Free Cycling Seminar open to all Auggies--Tonight
Public Safety's City Cycling Seminar
Tuesday Sept. 15 from 6-8:30 pm
Learn how to safely navigate the city on your bicycle! Hosted by Public Safety, this class is a confidence booster on city bicycling. Learn quick stops, quick turns, and lane positioning. Bicycle and Helmet are required. Class will be held in Parking Lot D from 6-8:30 pm. Prizes such as U-Locks worth $35 will be given out to those who fully attend the class. Class size is limited. GRE Prep: Register Now
Going to graduate school by the Fall of 2010 or 2011? Most masters and doctoral programs require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this fall on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You'll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.
The course meets Mondays 6-9 PM for six weeks (Sept 21, 28, Oct 5, 12, 19, 26) in Sverdrup 2. The cost is only $40, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review who charge over $1,000.
Alums, staff, and non-Augsburg students are also welcome to register.

The school offers concentrations and specializations in Public and Non-Profit Management and Leadership, Community and Economic Development, Social Policy, Policy Analysis, Global Public Policy (including International Development), Science, Technology and Environmental Policy, Women and Public Policy, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning, Land Use and Urban Design, Housing and Community Development, and Regional, Economic and Workforce Development. We also offer joint degrees with the schools of Business, Law, Social Work, Public Health, Architecture and Landscape Architecture and Civil Engineering.
The information sessions will take place in Room 205 Humphrey Center (Freeman Commons). Beverages and pizza will be served. Faculty and current students will speak briefly about each of the degree programs and will also be available to answer questions.
This event is free and open to the public.

LSAT Prep Starts Wed: Register Now
Considering Law school? Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) Prep will be offered on campus this fall. Our course instructor scored in the top 1% of test-takers and formerly taught LSAT Prep for the Princeton Review. URGO offers this 3-week course for only $125, which includes test prep materials.

GMAT Prep - Registration Now Open
Almost finished with your undergraduate degree? Thinking about a Master of Business Administration program? Most MBA programs require the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) for admission. GMAT Prep sessions are offered this fall on campus through the Augsburg MBA Program. Sessions will cover verbal, writing, and quantitative problems.
The course meets Tuesdays 6-9 PM for five weeks (October 20 & 27, and November 3, 10, & 17). The cost is $300, including a $50 non-refundable deposit paid upon registration. This fee includes prep book and materials.

Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 - Oct. 15
Hispanic Heritage Month
In 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month-long celebration, Sept. 15-Oct. 15. During this month, North America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. citizens or residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18 respectively.
This month of remembering is a time for the Hispanic community in the United States to celebrate its history, pride, identity and contributions to the world. Its cultural diversity is reflected in the mix of its roots from individual Latin American countries, including Spain and the Caribbean. The main characteristic of Hispanics/Latinos is the shared native language, Spanish; which is spoken by over 332 million people in the world and 36 millions in North America. Although most Hispanics speak Spanish, each subgroup adapts the pronunciation and slang of its homeland according to circumstances. Likewise, they have inherited different religious traditions from foreign countries or from their homelands or according to own indigenous roots like Aztec, Maya or Inca.
Terminology – What should I say? Terms like Latino, Hispanic and Chicano are worth remembering. For example: Latino refers to American-traced heritage, such as from Latin America. Hispanic refers to heritage that can be traced back to Spain; Chicano refers to residents of the United States who are of Mexican descent, with many also tracing their heritage to Spain, Native American cultures and the Aztec civilization. In recent survey, the majority of them in the U.S. prefer to be called Hispanic.
In 2003, Hispanic/Latino Student Services celebrated its 10th anniversary with over 40 students, from the initial 13 students. This Fall, in its 15th anniversary, 127 Hispanic/Latino students are enrolled including day, WEC and graduate students. Events for this year’s commemoration will be announced accordingly, and in days ahead additional articles will appear to offer our Augsburg community a broader picture of today’s U.S. largest minority.

Volunteers Needed - Pedestrian and Bicycle Count
The City of Minneapolis Department of Public Works is conducting its 3rd annual Pedestrian and Bicycle Count starting Tuesday, Sept. 15. Volunteers are needed to collect information on the numbers of walkers and cyclists who pass through key intersections on Franklin Avenue on any given day. This count provides important information used by the City, Seward Redesign, and the Seward Neighborhood Group to improve pedestrian and bike safety in the Seward neighborhood. Credit Refunds for Fall Term
Attention Students: Beginning with this Fall and for future terms, Credit Refunds will be issued either via electronic Direct Deposit or by a paper check mailed to your permanent address. Checks will not be held on-campus, but will be immediately mailed.
Make sure to sign up for direct deposit at www.augsburg.edu/enroll and update your address in Augnet Records & Registration.
Fall Refund Dates:

Day - Friday, October 2
Direct deposit is the fastest method of receiving a credit refund, and all students are encouraged to take advantage of this new service!

"Who Killed the Electric Car?" is a 2006 documentary film that explores the creation, limited commercialization, and subsequent destruction of the battery electric vehicle in the United States. WHY!? Constitution Day
"Constitution as Narrative: story-telling, civic engagement, and the art of politics"
This talk will be given Dr. Joseph Underhill to examine the constitution, and other founding documents (charters, manifestos, declarations, vision statements) in the context of the question of political agency—how we conceive of and actualize notions of the human ability to meaningfully take action in relation to the political problems of the day. Conceiving of constitutions broadly, it will explore the idea of personal constitutions or narratives as avenues to political artfulness, not just at the level of formal government documents, but as personal manifesto. As part of Sustainability Awareness Month, this talk will focus on how we are responding to the issue of climate change and explore how personal narratives can play a role in that process.
