Spirituality Breakfast - Thursday, Sept. 10, 7:30-9 a.m.

Looking for a spiritual start to your day? The StepUP® Program at Augsburg College is hosting the annual kick-off event for Recovery Month, the Spirituality Breakfast. It will be held on Thursday, September 10th from 7:30 – 9:00am, in the East Commons of the Christensen Center. This program is open to Augsburg faculty, staff, students, and the general public. The breakfast and program are FREE and interested attendees must RSVP to Anne Grove in the StepUP office, 612-330-1692.

We hosted 125 attendees at last year’s event where supporters were able to share their spiritual journey and vocations in recovery. This year’s keynote speaker will be Brenda Iliff, the clinical director at the Hazelden Women’s Center, and StepUP students will also speak about how recovery has affected their life.

This September is the 20th anniversary of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). The purpose of Recovery Month is to promote the societal benefits of alcohol and drug addiction treatment, to laud the contributions of treatment providers, and to promote the message that recovery from alcohol and drug disorders in all its forms is possible.

Recycling and Organics Collection News

A representative from Allied Waste will be in the Christensen Center lobby today to provide information about their role in Augsburg's trash, recycling and organics collection program. Stop by their table between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM to learn about how Augsburg College is moving toward a more sustainable campus by reducing trash and increasing our collection of organic wastes from all dining facilities on campus.

Augsburg is converting to "single stream" recycling which allows all paper, cans & bottles and cardboard to be mixed together at the collection sights on campus. New labeling of containers will begin today and continue throughout campus until all the recycling containers will have the new "Single Stream Recycling" signs on them. There will no longer be green an blue tops on the containers to restrict entry. Please be sure not to put trash in the recycling containers.

Most Aviands catered events on campus will be using compostable organic dinnerware that will be collected as organic waste - not trash. This process will reduce our trash collection by a minimum of 8 cubic yards per week and will allow us to reduce one trash pickup per week at the Christensen Center. Each time we recycle or collect organic waste the College saves hauling costs, taxes and burner/landfill fees plus we help the environment and move closer to being a carbon neutral campus. Organics collection containers will be added at some additional locations on campus in the future but for now they will only be located at dining facilities and events.
