Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Crime Alert: Burglary in Sverdrup

On Monday, June 1, 2009, College officials discovered two laptops missing from offices in Sverdrup Hall. Pry marks on the doors and frames suggest a several large screwdrivers or crowbars were used to force open the doors. The last day we can confirm that the computers were in the rooms was Monday, May 25th, 2009 at approximately 1 p.m.

If you have any information regarding this crime, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department or Augsburg's Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by dialing 1717 from an on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from an off-campus phone.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

- Lock valuables, including laptop computers, in a drawer. Thieves frequently target rooms where computers and other valuables are plainly visible through windows and sidelights.

- Always lock your office whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.

- If no one is in your office suite, lock the suite door also. The suite doors are often sturdier and more difficult to force open than interior office doors. Additionally, locking a suite door requires a thief to begin their work in a public hallway rather than a private and unmonitored suite.

- Be aware of strangers who may be looking for valuables to return and steal later. Immediately report suspicious activity to Augsburg DPS.

- Regularly back-up all data on your computer and encourage your colleagues to do likewise. Students and employees should contact student computing or their LFC respectively with questions about backing up their data.

- Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.

- Keep your car keys on your person at all times. If a crook can take your keys, they can take your car.

If you have questions or concerns regarding crime at Augsburg, please contact John Pack, Director of Public Safety at 612-330-1644 or pack@augsburg.edu.

Farmers Market - Planning Committee

The Augsburg Farmers Market plans to begin Tuesday, July 7th and run every Tuesday from 2-5 pm in front of Foss Chapel. The selection will only consist of local vegetables (if we wanted to sell prepared foods or imported produce, it would require trickier licenses). We are partnering with the Brian Coyle Farmers Market where the same farmers sell at the center in the morning.

I have promised the farmers a successful market, and I would like to brainstorm with a team of interested people on campus to find out how to bring our staff, faculty, and students out to the market. Please let me know if you'd be interested in meeting a couple times over the summer to talk about promotions and communication. Thanks!

Payroll Notice Regarding Campus Beautification Day

We want to take the time to clarify the recent message regarding the Campus Beautification Day on June 5th and try to answer questions that may come up about how to indicate this day on timesheets or absence reports.

This is considered a day of work if you are normally scheduled to work that day; however, anyone taking the day off and not participating in the Campus Beautification Day/picnic will need to use benefit time and indicate such on their timesheet or absence report. (Student workers will be paid for only the hours they were normally scheduled to work during that time and only if they participate in the beautification project/picnic during that scheduled work time.) Employees are not expected to use their Community Service benefit time for this day.

We hope many employees are able to participate and enjoy this time working and socializing together.

Have a great summer!

Summer Nanny and Babysitting/Tutoring

My daughter Sarah is home from Dickinson College for the summer. She is looking for a nanny position for school age kids or other babysitting/tutoring jobs.

She is certified in CPR and Wilderness First Aid. She was on the swim team for 6 years and the high school golf team, and is involved in technical theater so she would be able to supervise kids during their summer activities and add fun activities of her own. She has her own car and is available in the Twin Cities area.

She would also be available for tutoring or college preparation and essay writing for older students. She completed the International Baccalaureate Degree in high school and has been on the Dean's list for both years at Dickinson. She speaks Spanish - 6 years - and Mandarin Chinese - 2 years.

Contact me for her phone number!
