Would You Like to Be published?

Do you have an academic paper you're particularly proud of?

It might be worth even more than the grade you received.

The Augsburg Honors Review wants to publish your work. All you have to do is submit it!

What to Submit:
We will consider papers from all disciplines that successfully articulate an original and compelling thesis.

Why Submit?
Being a published author is one of the best ways to demonstrate your writing skills to graduate schools, professional schools, and employers.

How to Submit:
Please send your work to review@augsburg.edu and include the following information:

-- The first and last names of all authors and faculty advisors,
-- Your anticipated graduation date,
-- A reliable way to contact you other than your college-provided email address,
-- The name of the institution where your research was conducted (if other than Augsburg), and
-- The title of your paper.

We prefer Microsoft Word format (.doc) for all attachments.

The priority deadline to submit your work for the 2010 publication is April 20, 2009.

What is the Augsburg Honors Review?
The Augsburg Honors Review is an interdisciplinary journal exhibiting outstanding work by undergraduate students. The goal of the AHR is to give students the opportunity to participate in scholarly conversations within their disciplines and to expose them to the dialogue between a journal and a contributor in editing an article for publication.

For more information, please contact Shawn Boonstra (boonstra@augsburg.edu).

General Announcements

Donate to Abused Women and Children

For thousands of women and children, home can be frightening, lonely and for many it is a very dangerous place. The Lewis House, located in Eagan, is dedicated to helping these women and children find safety and get them back on their feet. The Lewis House provides shelter, food, daycare and education about safe relationships for women and children who seek their services. To support these women and children, a few students from Augsburg College will be running a donation drive. We will be collecting items from now until the first week in April, at which time we will deliver all donated items to the Lewis House and help pass things out to the women and children.

Items the Lewis House needs are: bath sized towels & wash cloths, twin size sheets/comforters, pillowcases, diapers, infant formula - all varieties, baby bottles/nipples, craft supplies (markers, crayons, construction paper, special kits), school supplies (notebooks, folders, back packs), educational toys, puzzles, videos and learning games, toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss, old cell phones with chargers, women and youth clothing (any age, gently used or new).

Collecting through April 3!

Please contact Ashle with questions at neunsing@augsburg.edu.

Giselle Stern Hernández Performing at Augsburg

Giselle Stern Hernández is a Mexican-North American writer and performer. She will give a talk on Cultural Diversity Friday, March 27 from 6-6:30 p.m. in the Chapel; a Q&A will follow.

At 8 p.m. the same night, Giselle will present THE DEPORTEE'S WIFE in the Chapel. In this solo show, Giselle Stern Hernández’s marriage is laid out on the front lines of the North American immigration debate. Giselle’s husband, Roberto was deported from Chicago, Illinois back to Mexico in April of 2001. Giselle moved to Mexico to live with him in August of that same year. While she was born and raised in the States, and they were legally married, it didn't make a difference at all; her husband was deported anyway, with the order to stay out of the U.S. for twenty years.

And then there came the day that he wasn't allowed to enter Canada.

Through images and her words, she tells their unforgettable story. In THE DEPORTEE'S WIFE, Giselle brings a clear, distinctive and personal voice to an issue that's often swept away between sound bites and presidential campaigns.

Giselle tells you a love story you'll never forget.

Then on Monday, March 30, at 7 p.m. in SCI123, Giselle will perform TRANSDADDY. In this one-woman show, Giselle Stern Hernández uses images and her words to delve into her experience as the daughter of a transgendered father.

At the center of this story is how some daughters and sons jump through hoops and dance through fire for the dream of their parent's unconditional love.

Senior Writers

Senior English Majors:

Are you interested in reading something you have written while here at Augsburg? The English Department will be having an "open book reading" this spring. The English professors are working with us on creating an event where we could share our writings with family, faculty and friends.

The reading will take place April 17 and will be followed with a reception, including dessert and thoughtful conversation with friends, family and faculty. If you have any other recommendations or questions, feel free to contact us or any of the professors in the English department.

Please reply to one of us or your English professor if you would like to read some of your work as soon as possible so we can organize the event.

Scholarship and Donor Brunch, Sunday, March 29

If you are the recipient of a endowed or named scholarship and you have already RSVPed that you will come to the brunch on Sunday, please make sure to show up! We have over 150 students and donors matched up and we have assigned seats for 75% of the 300 people coming to the brunch. If you don't come there will be a big hole at our tables, and a lot of people will be missing you!

The brunch starts at 12:15 PM and goes until about 2:30 PM. Please wear nice clothes and plan to network with a lot of alumni and friends of Augsburg! We will be taking photos of donors and students after the brunch, so stick around after the brunch with your donors and get your picture taken together.

If you and your guest find you are not able to attend, please contact hutson@augsburg.edu as soon as possible so we can take you off of the list, and give your seat to someone else.

For cost purposes we limited the number of invitations this year to endowed and named scholarships. For every person who does not come, that RSVPed yes, we still pay the $25 cost of their brunch. Come and enjoy the good food and the music of the After Jazz Ensemble.

See you Sunday!

President's, Regents', and Legacy Scholars

You may have noticed that you did not get an invite to the Scholarship and Donor Brunch this spring. It will be held on Sunday, and some people have been wondering why they haven't heard about it and why they weren't invited.

This year we changed the invitee list in order to cut costs and keep more in the college budget for financial aide for next year. We didn't invite the donors to the Augsburg Fund, the Heritage Society or the Regent's, Legacy and President's scholarship recipients. I am sorry this was confusing, because these students have been invited for the past several years.

We only invited the students with named or endowed scholarships and the donors for those scholarships. It is a smaller group, but with a more direct connection.

If you have any questions about this please contact me at hutson@augsburg.edu or #1330. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for the disappointment.
