Dr. Dale Taylor to Speak on "Music and the Brain"

Dr. Taylor, is our visiting professor of music therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The event is sponsored by the library, Pan-Afrikan Society, and the music department.

The Augsburg Honors Review wants to publish your work. All you have to do is submit it!

What to Submit:
We will consider papers from all disciplines that successfully articulate an original and compelling thesis.

Why Submit?
Being a published author is one of the best ways to demonstrate your writing skills to graduate schools, professional schools, and employers.

How to Submit:
Please send your work to review@augsburg.edu and include the following information:

-- The first and last names of all authors and faculty advisors,
-- Your anticipated graduation date,
-- A reliable way to contact you other than your college-provided email address,
-- The name of the institution where your research was conducted (if other than Augsburg), and
-- The title of your paper.

We prefer Microsoft Word format (.doc) for all attachments.

The priority deadline to submit your work for the 2010 publication is April 20, 2009.

What is the Augsburg Honors Review?
The Augsburg Honors Review is an interdisciplinary journal exhibiting outstanding work by undergraduate students. The goal of the AHR is to give students the opportunity to participate in scholarly conversations within their disciplines and to expose them to the dialogue between a journal and a contributor in editing an article for publication.

1st Powwow at Augsburg This Saturday - All Welcome

Augsburg College will host their 1st Powwow this Saturday, March 28th. This is a celebration of the 30 Years of the American Indian Student Services Program and the Start of the Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (Fall 2007).

Grand Entries are at 1:00 and 7:00 PM. There will be a break for dinner at 5:00 PM. All are welcome to come!! No cost for admission.

There will be over 20 vendors selling Native made crafts and promoting Native organizations. The Student organization will be hosting a concession stand and doing a 50/50 and raffle ticket sale.

I would encourage you to come at the start of a grand entry to experience that. We are also honored to have Aztec/Maxica Dancers joining us for a dance just before the 1:00 grand entry. Please join us in a great day and bring your family and friends!

Powwow time is the Native American people’s way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and make new ones. This is a time to renew thought of the old ways and to preserve a rich heritage.

The Pow Wow begins by the Grand Entry. This is the entry of all the people entering the arena. During the Grand Entry, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the arena. The flags carried generally include the US flag, tribal flags, POW flag, and eagle staffs of various tribes present. These are usually carried by veterans. Native Americans hold the United States flag in an honored position despite the horrible treatment received from this country. The flag has a dual meaning. First it is a way to remember all of the ancestors that fought against this country. It is also the symbol of the United States which Native Americans are now a part. The flag here also reminds people of those people who have fought for this country.

Following the veterans are other important guests of the Pow Wow including tribal chiefs, Princesses, elders, and Pow Wow organizers. Next in line are the men dancers. The men are followed by the women dancers. Once everyone is in the arena, the song ends and a song is sung to honor the flag and the veterans. After a prayer, the dancing resumes, usually with a few Round Dances. After the Round Dances, intertribal dancing songs are sung and everyone dances to the beat of the drum, which represents the heartbeat of our ancestors.

Dancing continues for approximately 3-4 hours after each grand entry, depending on the number of dancers present. These dances will include inter-tribal (where everyone can dance), categories (Men's Grass Dance, Traditional, Fancy or Women's Jingle, Traditional or Fancy Shawl) or ages (tiny tot, youth, teen, adult).

People are welcome to come at any time throughout the day and you can stay as long as you would like. This is a great opportunity for our College to invite our Native community to our campus and also to allow the campus community to learn a small part of our Native American culture and traditions. Additional International Travel Funding Available

Due April 6

Faculty presenting a paper at an international conference are eligible for additional travel funding through CTL. Two $400 awards are available to supplement the annual travel award of $1200 for which faculty presenting a paper are eligible. (Canada is considered international.) These supplemental awards are determined competitively by the Committee on Faculty Development. The funding year is June 1-May 31st.

Bonner Leaders Program Applications Available

Beginning March 23rd applications will be available for the Bonner Leaders Program for fall of 2009. Day College students are encouraged to apply if:

-you will have work-study eligibility for the academic year 2009-2010.
-you are interested in developing leadership skills through a work-study placement in the community.
-you are able to make a two year commitment to the program.
-you are able to work 10-12 hours a week off-campus

Preference will be given to Freshman or Sophomore students, but all are encouraged to apply.

Please pick up the application in the Center for Service, Work, and Learning in the basement of Anderson Hall. Contact Kristin Farrell with any questions.

Donate to Abused Women and Children

For thousands of women and children, home can be frightening, lonely and for many it is a very dangerous place. The Lewis House, located in Eagan, is dedicated to helping these women and children find safety and get them back on their feet. The Lewis House provides shelter, food, daycare and education about safe relationships for women and children who seek their services. To support these women and children, a few students from Augsburg College will be running a donation drive. We will be collecting items from now until the first week in April, at which time we will deliver all donated items to the Lewis House and help pass things out to the women and children.

Items the Lewis House needs are:
bath sized towels
wash cloths
twin size sheets/comforters
pillowcases
diapers
infant formula - all varieties
baby bottles/nipples
craft supplies (markers, crayons, construction paper, special kits)
school supplies (notebooks, folders, back packs)
educational toys, puzzles, videos and learning games
toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss
old cell phones with chargers
women and youth clothing (any age, gently used or new)

We will be setting up a table in Christensen to collect items and will be available to answer any questions a few times in the coming week. People can also drop off items at the Enrollment Center.

Feminist Film Friday: "Cut" WRC, 3:30 p.m.

Please join us on Friday, March 27 at 3:30pm in the Women's Resource Center for a documentary screening (57 mins) and discussion to follow. This film breaks the silence around self injury: an experience that impacts the lives of a great many young people (probably more than you think). This film also includes interviews with GLBT survivors. Beth Carlson from CCHP will be available to facilitate discussion.

Synopsis:

"CUT: Teens and Self Injury" provides an intimate look at a problem that affects thousands of young people, their families and friends. Resisting sensationalism and graphic images, the film draws its power from the voices of the teens themselves. Urgent, searching, and profoundly moving, CUT issues a call to bring the problem of self-injury out of the shadows and reminds us that the first step towards healing is an honest acknowledgment of reality.

Here are three great ways to get fresh veggies on campus this summer, and one way to get it off campus.

2) Community Supported Agriculture - Purchase a share of Ploughshare Farm and each week through the summer, they'll deliver a 20-25 lb box full of organic produce. 4) Backyard Harvest Program - The Permaculture Research Institute is developing a program where they will connect you to an urban farmer who will grow veggies in YOUR OWN yard and train you how to do it in future seasons.
