What Are the Odds?

Super Bowl Sunday is coming this weekend and all across America and probably right here on our campus, people are placing their bets on who will be the big game winner. If you can stop at just this one big game and maybe bet a dinner or a Caribou Coffee to the winner -- good for you! Unfortunately some people cannot stop there and spend a lot of money on many different kinds of gambling.

On Thursday, 1/29, David Koeplan of Fairview Recovery Services will be on campus tabling with Counseling and Health Promotion and providing information and resources on gambling and college students. If you or someone you know may have a gambling problem, please stop by the table in Christensen Center between 11 - 1 p.m. to find out more information and local resources for help.

Magnuson Finalist for NCAA Skills Challenge

Augsburg's Tiffany Magnuson among finalists for 2009 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/012709magnuson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (1/27/09) -- Augsburg College women's hockey forward Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) was recently picked as one of 68 finalists for selection to compete in the 2007 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge, to be held at the Men's Division I Frozen Four in Washington, D.C., on April 10.

Magnuson was one of 34 women's hockey players selected as finalists, and the lone Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player on the finalist list. Magnuson is the lone NCAA Division III player among the 17 women's West Region finalists, and one of just three Division III women on the finalist list. Just two Division III men are on the 34-player men's finalist list. The finalists were selected from a field of approximately 140 nominees, all players who will exhaust their eligibility this season.

Later this season, a selection committee will pare the 68 finalists to the 32 players that will compete in the event, that will be held April 10 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., as part of the Frozen Four. To help determine the final 32 selections, a fan-voting element will be incorporated by the NCAA. While the fan voting will aid in the selection process, the ultimate decisions will be made by the selection committee by the end of February.

Magnuson has shined in two sports as an Augsburg student-athlete -- women's hockey and softball. In hockey, Magnuson has earned All-MIAC first-team honors each of her first three seasons -- one of just three Class of 2009 women's hockey players in the conference that can make that claim. Magnuson currently has two goals and seven assists for nine points on the season. With 58 goals in 90 career games, Magnuson stands just 10 goals away from the Augsburg career record for goal-scoring, 68, set by Angie Rieger (1998-2001). Magnuson has 89 career points to currently stand fourth in school history in the points category; the school record of 137 was set by Lauren Chezick (2002-05).

In softball, Magnuson is one of only two incoming seniors in the MIAC to have earned All-MIAC first-team honors in each of their first three seasons. She also earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Midwest Region third-team honors in 2008. A versatile player who has seen action at three positions -- first base, second base and pitcher -- in her career, Magnuson enters the 2009 season with a .379 career batting average with 74 runs scored, 17 doubles, 11 triples, three home runs and 30 RBI, along with 42 stolen bases.

Other Division III women's players on the Skills Challenge finalist list are Danielle Blanchard of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) and Kayla Coady of Elmira (N.Y.). Nick Klaren of Wisconsin-Stout and Keith Longo of Hobart (N.Y.) are Division III men's finalists.

Swenson Wrestling Hall of Fame Dedication Friday

Augsburg's Jeff Swenson '79 to be honored with dedication of Wrestling Wall of Fame on Friday

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/012709swenson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (1/27/09) -- Augsburg will honor the legacy of its 10-time national championship wrestling program with the dedication of the Jeff Swenson Wrestling Wall of Fame prior to the No. 1-ranked Auggies' dual meet with No. 2-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) on Friday night (1/30) at the Si Melby Hall/Kennedy Center complex. The dedication will take place at 6 p.m., with the wrestling dual against Wartburg to follow at 7:30 p.m. There is also a high school dual meet between Albert Lea and Coon Rapids at 6 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.

The Jeff Swenson Wrestling Wall of Fame will contain more than 30 trophies earned by Augsburg wrestling squads from various national tournaments, along with other artifacts celebrating the rich history of Augsburg's wrestling program, considered one of the elite small-college wrestling programs in the nation.

Swenson, a 1979 Augsburg alum who now serves as the school's athletic director, coached the Auggie wrestlers for 25 years (1980-84, 1986-2007), building the squad into a national small-college wrestling powerhouse. Under Swenson's leadership, Augsburg won a record-10 NCAA Division III national championships and produced a career dual-meet record of 321-44 (.879 winning percentage). During his 25 years as head coach, Swenson coached 158 All-Americans and 39 individual national champions.

As a wrestler at Augsburg from 1975-79, Swenson produced a 102-17 competitive record, earning NAIA All-American honors three times (1977-78-79) and winning the national title at 167 pounds in 1979. He earned the school's senior Honor Athlete award in 1979 and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Swenson has led Augsburg's 18-sport intercollegiate athletic program since 2001, when he was named Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation. In 2007, as part of a restructuring of the athletic department, Swenson's title was changed to Athletic Director. He is also serving as a wrestling assistant coach in 2008-09 under current head coach Mark Matzek.

For more information on the Jeff Swenson Wrestling Wall of Fame event, contact the Augsburg Alumni Relations office at 612-330-1085.
