He Qi in Chapel Tomorrow

Augsburg College continues the Vocatio Chapel Series on "Faith & the Imagination: The Call to the Arts" with renowned Chinese Christian painter, He Qi. He Qi is currently featured in the Gage Gallery in Oren Gateway with his exhibition, “Look Toward the Heavens” until February 15. He will also be speaking in chapel on January 21 at 10:20 in the chapel.

He Qi has been committed to the artistic creation of modern Chinese Christian art since 1983. He hopes to help change the "foreign image" of Christianity in China by using artistic language, and, at the same time, to supplement Chinese art the way Buddhist art did in ancient times. In his works, He Qi has blended together Chinese folk customs and traditional Chinese painting techniques created an artistic style of color-on-paper painting.

A lunch will be held following chapel at 11:00. Anyone interested in eating lunch with He Qi should contact Ross Murray at murray@augsburg.edu for an RSVP.

The Perfect Storm: Tonight in Oren 114

The Perfect Storm: A Historical Perspective on the Many Elements of the Present Financial Crisis

With the new administration set to take office on January 20th, one of the most pressing questions will be how to tackle the current crisis in the financial markets. While individual pieces of the crisis (i.e. "sub-prime" mortgages) have received attention from media outlets, the full depth and breadth of the crisis has been more difficult to fit into a 90 second soundbite.

Christopher Annand, a recent Augsburg MBA graduate and Compliance Officer for Ameriprise Financial, will join the January 20th MBA information session to share his views of the crisis in a different way. Using a unique history tour of regulatory, economic and industry events, told through "plain-language" explanations, Mr. Annand will weave the pieces together and show how this “perfect storm” exploded this fall, along with his thoughts on where the administration should focus their attention in the coming months.

Christopher Annand is a Compliance Officer and Manager with Ameriprise Financial in Minneapolis, charged with enforcing the firm's Code of Ethics for all employees. He has served with Ameriprise for over 10 years and holds his Series 7, 63 and 24 registrations with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA, formerly known as the NASD).

Mr. Annand recently graduated from the Augsburg MBA program and received his undergraduate degree from Saint Olaf College in Northfield, MN. In addition to these education pursuits, he will soon complete his CRCP certification (Certified Regulatory Compliance Professional) through the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Members of the Augsburg community are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Kathy Fagen at fagen@augsburg.edu or 612.330.1774.

Date: January 20, 2009
Time 5:30 - 7:00 PM
Location: Oren 114

Sign Up Now for My Name Is Rachel Corrie Auditions

Auditions for Rachel Corrie are January 20th from 7pm -10pm. A
sign-up sheet is now available on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater doors.
For the audition please prepare one of the selected monologues from
the show. Copies of the monologues are available in the theater
office. Monologues do not have to be memorized but should be well
prepared, and not read completely off the paper. You should also be
prepared to talk about something you feel passionate about, and there
is also a possibility of doing some movement.

Callbacks will be the following day Wednesday January, 21st from
3:00pm – 6:00pm.

The callback list should be up that morning or late Tuesday night.

My Name is Rachel Corrie is traditionally a one-woman show but will
be modified to be done with a cast of about 6. (Number is subject to
change depending on auditions)

Rehearsals for My Name is Rachel Corrie will be from 5:00pm to
8:30pm but are subject to change with the schedules of the cast and
crew.

There will be a week conflict with Eleuthéria rehearsals, but
should not be a major concern and can be worked around.

If you would like to read the play before auditions it is currently
on reserve in the library under the professor name of Michel Burden.
If you do not get a chance here is a short paragraph describing the
play (taken from the back of the script).

On March 16, 2003, Rachel Corrie, a twenty-three-year-old American,
was crushed to death by an Israeli Army bulldozer in Gaza as she was
trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home. MY NAME IS
RACHEL CORRIE is a one women play composed from Rachel’s own
journals, letters, and emails – creating a portrait of a messy,
articulate, Salvador Dali-loving chain-smoker (with a passion for the
music of Pat Benatar), who left her home and school in Olympia,
Washington, to work as an activist in the heart of Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. In the three sold-out London runs since its Royal Court
premiere, the piece has been surrounded by both controversy and
impassioned proponents, and has raised, an unprecedented call to
support political work and the difficult discourse it creates.

For more information about auditions, contact the stage manager
Karla Malpica at malpica@augsburg.edu
