National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month

Every year, towns, counties, and states around the country observe National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month (Recovery Month) in September. This year, the 19th annual Recovery Month recognizes the impact that real people and real stories have on recovery, and celebrates those who have worked to advance the treatment and recovery landscape.

In 2008, the theme highlights the people for whom treatment and long-term recovery have given a renewed outlook on life. The community is invited to take part in the theme, "Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery," and spread the word that addiction is a medical illness and that treatment is effective and recovery is possible. By getting involved, you can help more people on a path of recovery to lead more fulfilling lives.

All of us know someone with a substance use disorder, whether that person is a family member, friend, colleague, or neighbor. Those who have lived through these experiences have the most compelling stories to tell and can truly make a difference in helping others seek treatment. With that in mind, this year's Recovery Month celebration highlights the unique stories of each person in long-term recovery.

For each day in September, the StepUP® Program will provide a fact, meditation, or other recovery related "tid-bit."

Get Political Speakers -- Listen, Learn, Engage

Students, Faculty, and Staff -- You are invited to "Get Political" as Augsburg continues its role as host institution for the Washington Center Campaign 2008 Presidential Academic Seminar. How fortunate we are to be hosting over 150 students and faculty from around the country for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be at the center of a major national event. Augsburg's students received excellent field work placements – look for stories about their experiences in upcoming editions of Inside Augsburg.

This week we are co-sponsoring a Speaker Series that will bring voices from across the political spectrum to our campus. Check the "Get Political" webpage for the latest speaker schedule and locations: www.augsburg.edu/getpolitical

"Get Political" all week -- invite on and off-campus friends and colleagues to join you! Start Labor Day at 9 a.m. by learning the inside story from David O'Connor who is the Special Agent in Charge of Dignitary Protective Services with the United States Secret Service (Chapel). He will be followed by a Congressional panel at 10:30 a.m.

Listen to author and syndicated columnist Arianna Huffington on Tuesday at 9 a.m. (Sateren). Learn from Bob Schieffer of CBS News who will speak on Wednesday at 9 a.m. (Chapel). Engage Howard Dean, Chairman of the National Democratic Committee, who will hold a rally on Thursday at 12 noon (Urness/Mort lawn).
