Green Fact of the Day

Do Full Loads
Whenever you wash just a few clothes or dishes at a time rather than waiting for a full load to accumulate, you're wasting water, power, and money. The average American family of four washes about 540 loads of laundry a year, which consumes up to 21,000 gallons of water, and more than 150 loads of dishes, which uses about 1,500 gallons. Most of the energy consumed by washers goes toward heating the water -- about 90 percent in the clothes washer and 80 percent in the dishwasher. Combining half-loads, choosing short cycles, and using cold or warm rather than hot water in the clothes washer racks up savings.

Good for You: Wash two fewer loads of clothes and one fewer load of dishes a week and save up to 4,500 gallons of water a year.

Music For Social Change is a day of singing, songwriting, and fun. For eight years, Advocating Change Together has hosted this musical event, bringing together self-advocates, consumers, and allies to sing songs from civil rights movements and create new songs to capture the spirit of the disability rights movement.

The purpose of this workshop is to expand the use of music in our work, promote disability as a civil rights struggle, and celebrate our ability to create a more just society.

Musicians Larry Dittberner, Sherry Minnick, Maria Brown, and Vern Bloom have experience singing with groups and including everyone in the singing and activities.

Winford Named to Preseason All-America Team

Augsburg's Royce Winford named to D3Football.com Preseason All-America second team
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/072308winford.html

MINNEAPOLIS (7/23/08) -- Augsburg College wide receiver Royce Winford (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) was named to the D3Football.com Preseason All-America second team, it was announced on Wednesday.

Winford, a senior, was one of three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players to be named to the 50-member first and second teams by D3Football.com, a national web site that covers Division III football. St. John's a senior defensive tackle Nick Gunderson was also named to the first team, while Bethel junior cornerback Tim Cornish was named to the second team.

The honor is the latest for Winford, who was named to the Consensus Draft Services Division III Preseason All-American first team last month. Winford will enter his senior campaign after earning multiple honors as one of the top receivers in the MIAC in 2007. He was named to the D3Football.com All-America second team and the D3Football.com All-West Region first team, in addition to being named as a first-team All-MIAC selection.

In 2007, Winford set a single-season school record with 16 receiving touchdowns, while becoming the first Auggie since 1998 to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. He caught 101 passes for 1,403 yards, the second-most receptions and receiving yards in a single season in school history. He had seven 100-yard-plus receiving yardage games in 2007, including three straight games with 200 or more receiving yards midway through the season. In Augsburg's 38-16 victory over Carleton on Oct. 20, Winford set a team and MIAC single-game record with 20 receptions, a total that was tops among all NCAA football players, regardless of division, during the 2007 campaign.

His 10.1 receptions per-game finished second-best among all NCAA Division III receivers, and his 140.3 receiving yards per-game and 1,403 receiving yards were third-best among all Division III receivers and were tops among all MIAC receivers in overall play. In league games-only, his 89 receptions (11.1 per-game) and 1,189 yards (148.6 per-game) were both tops among all MIAC receivers.

Among all college football receivers (all NCAA divisions and NAIA) in 2007, Winford's 10.1 receptions per game ranked seventh-highest nationally, while his 140.3 receiving yards per-game were fifth-highest nationally and his 1,403 receiving yards were eighth-highest nationally.

In 28 career games, Winford has 154 catches (fourth-most in school history) for 2,143 yards (fourth-most in school history) and 24 receiving touchdowns (third-most in school history).

Under Haege, in his third year as Augsburg's head coach, the Auggie football team finished 5-5 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play in 2007, marking the first time Augsburg had reached the .500 mark since 2003 (5-5 overall, 4-4 MIAC). With its five victories, Augsburg also eclipsed its number of wins from the previous three seasons combined (4-26).

Augsburg opens its 2008 campaign on Sept. 6 with a game at Crown (Minn.). Augsburg's home opener is on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., when Wartburg (Iowa) visits Edor Nelson Field. Last season, Augsburg claimed one of its most dramatic victories in program history with a 14-13, come-from-behind win at Wartburg, which at the time was ranked No. 11 in the D3Football.com Division III national poll and No. 10 in the American Football Coaches Association Division III national poll.
