Campus Kitchen Gets Pedals

With summer kicking off, the campus kitchen can use:

1) A bike trailer. Joel Enright, our summer intern, is a biker in the truest sense. He and I would like to keep it that way, and are working to make Campus Kitchen food deliveries fully bikeable. First, we need a trailer that can haul large boxes. A kid's trailer would do the trick. We accept donations, but can purchase one if necessary. Do you have one buried in the garage?

2) Volunteers. With the campus fairly deserted and our student volunteers mostly gone, we could really use help cooking and making deliveries. Please consider using your free time, as well as your 16 hours of paid community time, to assist Campus Kitchen to serve our 1500 meals each month. You could even do it by bike!

Our schedule:

Cooking, Mondays, 7 - 9 p.m. - at Augsburg College
Delivery, Tuesdays, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. - at the Brian Coyle Community Center
Cooking, Wednesdays, 7 - 9 p.m. - at Augsburg College
Delivery, Thursdays, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. - at Peace House homeless shelter
Delivery, Thursdays, 3 - 5:30 p.m. - to seniors who live independently
Cook/Deliver, 1st, 3rd, 5th Sundays, 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. - to Secure Waiting homeless shelter

Auggie Athletics

Auggie Volleyball in Brazil this Week

Augsburg volleyball team in Brazil for training, competition trip May 5-13
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/volleyball/2008brazil/index.html

The Augsburg College women's volleyball team is taking a trip of a lifetime, an eight-day trip to Brazil for training and competition from May 5-13.

The team departed on May 5 for the eight-day trip to Rio De Janiero, a city of more than 6 million people in Brazil. The Auggies will train and play four matches against local club competition. The team will also take part in a beach volleyball session with a Brazilian professional coach, and participate in a community service project for underprivileged children in Rio De Janiero.

The Auggies will also play the role of tourists during the eight-day trip, experiencing Copacabana Beach, Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Hill, sailing in Buzios and a day in Cabo Frio and the Geriba beach, before returning to the Twin Cities on May 13.

Photos and student-athlete diaries will be linked online during and after the trip.

Augsburg's volleyball team, under third-year head coach Jessica Rinehart, finished 13-16 overall, 4-7 in MIAC play in 2008. Augsburg finished its season with its best record in both overall and MIAC play since the 1998 campaign (17-11 overall, 6-5 MIAC). The Auggies won four of their last five matches to close the season, including a win in five games over NCAA Division III national tournament team Bethel on Oct. 20.

Tiffany Magnuson named NFCA All-Midwest Region

Augsburg's Tiffany Magnuson named to NFCA Division III All-Midwest Region third team
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/050608magnuson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (5/6/08) -- Augsburg College softball player Tiffany Magnuson (JR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Midwest Region third team as an at-large selection, it was announced on Tuesday.

Augsburg's leadoff hitter, Magnuson hit .390 (53-of-136), with six doubles, five triples, two home runs and 12 RBI. She was second on the team in batting average, and led the team in both slugging percentage (.551) and on-base percentage (.461). She was 12-of-14 in stolen bases this season, one of four Auggies to have 10 or more stolen bases. Defensively, Magnuson played three positions for the Auggies this season -- first base, second base and pitcher -- and committed just four errors in 212 chances for a team-best .981 fielding percentage.

Pitching for the first time in her collegiate career, Magnuson appeared in 14 games as a reliever with a 3-0 record and 4.89 earned-run average. Pitching in 34.1 innings this season, Magnuson collected eight strikeouts against 16 walks, while allowing a .312 opponent batting average.

In her career, Magnuson is hitting .379 (132-of-348) with 74 runs scored, 17 doubles, 11 triples, three home runs and 30 RBI. She has a .517 slugging percentage and .446 on-base percentage, to go along with 42 stolen bases in 51 attempts. She has a .967 career fielding percentage, with just 17 errors in 515 defensive chances.

A two-sport athlete, Magnuson is a two-time All-MIAC first-team softball selection (one of only two 2007 MIAC sophomores to be named first-team All-MIAC in both 2006 and 2007) and a three-time All-MIAC first-team women's hockey selection (one of only three MIAC juniors to be named All-MIAC first team in 2006, 2007 and 2008). She was also named Augsburg's Women's Outstanding Athlete of the Year at the inaugural Auggie Awards in April.

Under second-year head coach Tim Gormley, Augsburg finished 20-23 overall and 15-7 in MIAC play in 2008, one of its most dramatic comeback seasons in school history. After finishing 4-34 last season and starting 4-14 this season, Augsburg won 16 of its final 25 games to reach the 20-win mark for the first time since the 1995 season (20-18) and just the ninth time in the last 30 years (since the 1979 season). Augsburg reached the MIAC postseason playoffs for the first time in the event's five-year history this year, while also reaching the postseason for the first time since 1984.
