"Oscar Romero" Celebration in Chapel this Friday

Part 3:

Oscar Romero’s Christian life:

Romero’s weekly homilies were broadcasted by radio and were heard by millions across El Salvador. He spoke in defense of the poor, proclaiming that love is the only answer to injustice and violence. He called the oppressors to repentance, and won the respect of people around the world as the “Voice of the Voiceless.” His advocacy led to violent opposition. “I have often been threatened with death,” he said. “I must tell you that, as a Christian, I do not believe in death without resurrection. If they kill me, I will rise again in the Salvadoran people.”
On March 24, 1980, while celebrating mass, Romero was killed by a single bullet from an assassin’s rifle. One day earlier during his homily at the cathedral, Romero challenged the armed forces directly, saying, “No soldier is obliged to obey an order that is contrary to the will of God….In the name of God, then, and in the name of this suffering people I ask you, I beg you, I order you: stop the repression.”
No one in El Salvador has ever been held accountable for Romero’s murder but a United Nations Truth Commission assigned responsibility to Roberto D’Aubisson, a paramilitary leader who founded the ARENA party. In a historic decision in September 2004, a California judge found Alvaro Saravia liable for the murder and ordered him to pay $10 million in civil damages.
Romero was martyred over a quarter century ago. His legacy lives. His witness to the gospel values of nonviolence, justice, and love continue to inspire people of faith around the world today. - (For more information about the Romero trial, visit the Center for Justice and Accountability at: www.cja.org.)
