Need a Course? Try Medieval Connections (HUM 120)

Medieval Connections (HUM 120) is the introductory course for Medieval Studies, but it's a great course for anyone interested in history or the culture of the Middle Ages.

The course uses an interdisciplinary approach -- professors from nine (9) different departments teach the course! These include history, religion, philosophy, literature, art, theatre, mathematics, science, and music.

It also takes an experiential approach to learning, for example, by having students and faculty attend class in academic robes, just as they did in medieval universities.

HUM 120 fulfills the Humanities LAF. For more info, go to:
http://www.augsburg.edu/medievalstudies/news/sevendisciplines.html
or e-mail adamo@augsburg.edu

Scholastic Connections Mentor Profile

At the start of this academic year, we did not have a mentor for one of our new Scholastic Connections recipients. Following a plea for help finding a mentor at our Sept. 10 event, a faculty member volunteered to fill this role. I am so delighted to welcome him into our program and grateful for his generous spirit!

Brian Corner has been teaching biology at Augsburg since 2005. A native New Zealander, he completed his PhD in biochemistry at the University of Otago in 1989 and has been on his world tour even since, with stints doing research and teaching in Seattle, Melbourne (Australia), Minneapolis/St. Paul, and in hyperspace as a telecommuter for a company in Boston. He also has a passion for music and spent the last 4 years working at the West Bank's Cedar Cultural Center, mostly as Volunteer Coordinator, but more recently performing publicity duties. He also has a strong interest in global education, and in 1998 he led a group of students on a 2 month program to New Zealand. He has two great sons, one of whom is away for 9 months in New Zealand on an extended bike ride before he heads off to college, the other is a sophomore at Highland Park Senior High.

Brian is mentor to Richmond Appleton. Thanks, Brian!!

• Communicating with both the agricultural and the general public about the appropriateness of current versions of GMO crops for food

The entire campus community is invited to hear Dr. Stuthman in chapel at 10:20 a.m.

If you previously submitted a graduation application but did not receive a completed copy in your campus box (for Day students) or at your home, please contact the Registrar’s Office to ensure that the application was received.

Graduation applications are available at the Enrollment Center, or on the web at http://www.augsburg.edu/enroll/forms/gradapp.pdf. Questions can be directed to Tom Kelsey at kelseyt@augsburg.edu, or by phone at 612-330-1038.

Emerging Leaders Mentor Positions

Do you know a student who is an exceptional leader? Is this student a positive role model to their peers? If so, the Department of Campus Activities encourages you to nominate them to be a Mentor for the Emerging Leaders Program. The Emerging Leaders Program is designed to help foster new student leadership here at Augsburg. Program participants are members of the first and second year classes who are just beginning their leadership development journey. Mentors assist these students along this process.

This is a great opportunity for current leaders to take that next step in their development while fostering new leadership on campus, and to gain additional skills and experience.

Nomination forms will be available Tuesday, Nov. 27 at the information desk in the Christensen Center. Please take a few moments to nominate potential Mentors for the Emerging Leaders Program! Nominations are due on Dec. 4 by 4 p.m. to Brian Emerick, CB 111. If you have any questions, please contact him at x6501.

Danish Lama Shares Tibetan Buddhism TONIGHT

“The Way Things Are”
A Buddhist Lecture
With Lama Ole Nydahl
Tuesday, Nov. 27
8 p.m.

Minneapolis Central Library
Pohlad Hall (On the 2nd floor)
311 Nicollet Mall
Minneapolis

$15 (or $10 with valid student ID), cash or check only.

Lama Ole Nydahl is one of the few Westerners fully qualified as a Lama and meditation teacher in the Karma Kagyu Buddhist tradition. In 1969, Ole Nydahl and his wife Hannah became the first Western students of H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. After completing 3 years of Buddhist philosophy studies and intensive meditation training, Ole Nydahl began teaching Buddhism in Europe at the request of the 16th Karmapa. Lama Ole has since been teaching in a different city nearly every day.

Challenging people's concepts of life and Buddhism in an unorthodox manner, such as encouraging students to sky dive to get a glimpse of full awareness which is the goal of meditation, Lama Ole has been a major driving force in bringing Buddhism to the West. To date he has established more than 500 Diamond Way Buddhist centers in 44 countries around the world. His unique synthesis of modern style and ancient wisdom helped create the largest body of students practicing Diamond Way Buddhist methods in the West.

Focus the Nation at Augsburg

To our Faculty and Staff,

On Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, Augsburg College will participate in a nationwide movement called “Focus the Nation.” This event will focus on global climate change and will seek to involve the entire campus community, faculty, staff, and students in a combined effort to create awareness and action concerning this issue. Currently, over a thousand college campuses have signed on.

I invite you to participate in this event. On Jan. 31 (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.), there will be a campus-wide teach-in where faculty, staff, and other members of the community will speak on relevant topics from the perspective of their discipline. There will be one-hour sessions giving each speaker 10 minutes to present, leaving 20-25 minutes for group discussion. We hope that you will consider participating in this event by speaking and/or by encouraging your classes to attend the sessions. Once we know which faculty and staff are interested, we will put together a more-detailed plan for the day.

Please let me know if you are interested in presenting for one of the interdisciplinary sessions as soon as possible. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Tim Dougherty (doughert@augsburg.edu) and Mary Laurel True (truem@augsburg.edu) are also willing to provide extra information and/or clarifications.

There is a large group of students on campus from many organizations who are planning this event in an effort to create awareness and action on this important issue. It is our hope that the faculty and staff will join us in our enthusiastic efforts to make this event a success.

Chair of Recruitment Committee
