Subject: Smoking/Clean Air at Augsburg

Submitter:
Ann L Garvey, Vice President of Student Affairs, Student Affairs

Message: The State of Minnesota has a a new law which goes into effect Oct. 1 which prohibits smoking state-wide in bars and restaurants. This is a good time for a reminder about smoking at Augsburg.

SMOKING/CLEAN AIR POLICY
The success of this policy will depend on the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of smokers and non-smokers. Everyone shares the responsibility for adhering to and enforcing the policy. In all cases the right of the non-smoker to protect her or his health and comfort will take precedence over a smoker’s desire to smoke.

At Augsburg College:
• Smoking is prohibited in all indoor facilities.
• All residence halls are smoke free.
• Smoking is prohibited on balconies with the exception of the balcony outside Urness Hall.
• Smokers should refrain from smoking on stairs and ramps leading into or out of buildings.
• Smoking is prohibited in any posted “No Smoking” area, such as the outdoor terrace area on the northside of Oren Gateway.

Smokers should use the receptacles provided to dispose of cigarette butts, matches, etc.

Is it the responsibility of the community to abide by this policy and to enforce this policy. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) will respond to complaints, but will not seek out offenders.
