Subject: McNair Scholars Program Returns to Augsburg

Submitter:
Dixie Shafer, Director, Office for Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity

Message: Augsburg has been awarded the McNair Scholars Program Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The McNair Scholars Program at Augsburg is funded to serve 25 students who are low-income and first-generation and/or from underrepresented groups in graduate education to prepare them for graduate school through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.

The four-year grant totals around $900,000 and has an Oct.1, 2007 (gasp!) start date.

Many of you know that Augsburg had a McNair Scholars Program from 1999-2003 and boasts great success for the numbers of alums who are enrolled in or have earned Master's and Doctoral degrees at prestigious institutions across the country. "McNair II" will drawing upon the success and wisdom of our McNair alums to support the new cohort of Scholars.

In addition to the McNair alums, we have a pool of experienced and stellar faculty mentors who have served Augsburg students through both the McNair Program, and more recently, URGO. We also have a community of supportive staff members who understand the Program and who are strong advocates for and mentors to the McNair-profile student.

We are poised, then, to launch and maintain (and beyond four years this time) a highly successful McNair Scholars Program with the collective support of the entire Augsburg community.

The grant document is the result of contributions from many Augsburg staff and faculty. Stay tuned for a long list of people to thank in a future e-mail.

Today, let us rejoice in the knowledge that there is an amazing group of students "out there" who soon will be connected to Augsburg McNair and the national McNair community.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

1.
Classes will be given precedence to all classroom spaces in the Oren Gateway Center. Subject: Alum Bill Nelson Receives Baseball Honor
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Director, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg Alum Bill Nelson '74 Inducted into Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/091907nelson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (9/19/07) -- Augsburg College alumnus and former baseball assistant coach Bill Nelson '74 was inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame during ceremonies on Saturday at the St. Cloud (Minn.) Civic Center.

The award is the latest honor for Nelson. In 2006, Nelson received the Mike Downes Memorial Award from the Minnesota Baseball Association, recognizing outstanding service to Minnesota amateur baseball.

Nelson has been involved with one of the top amateur teams in the state, the Dundas (Minn.) Dukes, for more than a quarter-century. He began playing for the Dukes in 1975 and served two stints as manager, from 1989 to 1999 and from 2005 to the present day. He also played for teams in Hayward, Minn., Columbia Heights, Minn., and Burnsville, Minn.

He was a player on two state Class B championship teams (1982, 1988) and three runner-up teams (1975, 1980, 1981) with the Dukes and one state runner-up team with the Burnsville Bobcats (1984). He managed the Dukes to state titles in 1998 and 1999, and a runner-up finish in 1996.

He was one of the key leaders in renovating Memorial Park in Dundas, turning it into one of the finest amateur baseball facilities in the state. The facility currently serves as one of the fields for the annual Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament, and was host to the 2003 Minnesota state amateur tournament.

Nelson served for two seasons as an assistant coach and 12 seasons as head coach at Carleton College (1991-2005) and spent the 2006 season as assistant coach at Augsburg.

Nelson was a veteran of Augsburg's baseball and basketball programs, and was inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. He was twice named all-conference and NAIA All-District 13 in baseball as a pitcher, and was a key member of Augsburg's 1973 MIAC championship team, pitching in both games of a doubleheader sweep of St. Thomas that secured the conference title that season. Nelson received his bachelor's degree in English from Augsburg in 1974.
