Message: From WAC to WID: Supporting Effective Student Writing

Please join us May 23rd from 1:30-5:00 in Lindell 301 for an experiential workshop on writing in the disciplines. This workshop is designed for faculty from across the college to help us teach in ways that result in stronger writing skills in our students, whatever the major. Building on the work of the AugCore Writing Collaborative and refreshing our understanding of the foundations in first year writing courses in the English Department, participants will actively consider and apply ideas about important traits in writing. We then will investigate ways to design assignments in various genres (e.g. lab reports, essays, theater reviews, term papers) that are more likely to produce the quality we expect in our students’ work. All faculty are invited and we especially welcome our adjunct colleagues. Please also join us for lunch in the Minneapolis Room prior to the workshop if you are able. Gift cards will be included. RSVP to Martin@augsburg.edu by May 21st.

Submitter:
Douglas E Green, Professor, English

Message: In light of the discussion at the last faculty meeting (4 May), the Committee for the Selection of Nominees for Dean of the College (hereafter the SNDC Committee) would like input from the faculty:

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE PROCESS OF SELECTING THE NOMINEE(S) FOR DEAN OF THE COLLEGE? PLEASE PROVIDE THE RATIONALE FOR YOUR VIEWS.

As we confer with the President, this is your opportunity to be heard. We would like to hear from each and every faculty member by 5 pm, Friday, 1 June.

Please note that the SNDC Committee is interested in the reasons behind your position, so that we can better understand faculty views about the process for selecting the Dean. All responses will be read only by the SNDC Committee; the President and the Interim Dean will not see them. They will be treated confidentially by all Committee members.

We also insist that in order for us to give due weight to all faculty and their views that responses be written; in addition, they must be signed or, in the case of e-mail, identifiable. In other words, we must know the identity of the author or authors. While individual Committee members are happy to discuss issues with you, we ask that you submit your responses and comments in writing to us, so that your views are officially presented to the whole Committee for consideration and discussion.

All responses are due by 5 pm, Friday, 1 June. They may be submitted either by e-mailing the following address deansearch@augsburg.edu or by submitting a hard copy to Lois Bosch (CB 253), Nancy Fischer (CB 116), and Mark Strefeler (CB 230).

If you have questions, please feel free to contact individual members of the Committee. We appreciate the time and effort your participation requires and look forward to hearing from you by 5 pm, Friday, 1 June.

Message: Augsburg's Erik Helgerson, Andrew Johnson named Cleveland Golf Division III All-America Scholars for second straight year

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/051607mgolf.html

MINNEAPOLIS (5/16/07) -- For the second straight year, Augsburg College men’s golfers Erik Helgerson (Sr., Chisago City, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) and Andrew Johnson (Sr., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) were named Cleveland Golf Division III All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America, it was announced on Monday.

Helgerson and Johnson were Augsburg’s top two golfers this season, with Helgerson finishing with a 75.83 season-long stroke average and Johnson finishing with a 76.30 average. Helgerson finished his career with a 78.21 average, while Johnson’s career average was 78.11. Helgerson was a three-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honoree, with league-meet finishes of ninth twice and seventh in 2006, while Johnson earned All-MIAC honors in 2006 with a fourth-place league-meet finish.

Both were also three-time Academic All-MIAC honorees. Helgerson is an accounting and finance major with a 3.51 grade-point average, while Johnson is a business administration and economics major with a 3.72 GPA. Both were also among seven Augsburg seniors named as Honor Athletes this season, the highest honor the college awards its student-athletes.

To earn recognition as a GCAA/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar, individuals must be juniors or seniors in college and have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average. Also, Division III golfers must have a 79.0 or lower stroke average, playing in at least 70 percent of a team's competitive rounds, to qualify for recognition.

Under second-year co-head coaches Ted Vickerman and Jim Rustad, the Auggies finished one of their best seasons in recent years in 2006-07, closing with a team stroke average of 305.91. In the fall half of the season, the Auggies finished second in the MIAC championships, marking the 13th straight year that the Auggies have finished in the top five at the conference meet.

Helgerson and Johnson were two of six MIAC golfers to earn Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar recognition. Jordan Hawkinson, Mark Stuckey and Eric Tone of Gustavus were honored, along with Andrew Longbella of St. John's.

MINNEAPOLIS (5/17/07) -- Nine members of the NCAA Division III national champion Augsburg College wrestling team will be training and competing with some of the top amateur wrestlers in the country at the FILA Junior World Team Trials, to be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., from Sunday to next Saturday (5/20-26).

Five All-Americans and two national champions will be among the nine Augsburg individuals competing at the meet. National champions Quincy Osborn (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn., 141 pounds) and Jeremy Anderson (Jr., Thief River Falls, Minn., 157 pounds) will compete, along with national runner-up Seth Flodeen (So., Cannon Falls, Minn., 125 pounds), fifth-place finisher Robbie Gotreau (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS, 174 pounds) and eighth-place finisher Wally O'Connor (Jr., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS, 197 pounds).

Other Auggies competing will be Paul Bjorkstrand (So., Burnsville, Minn., 125 pounds), Jason Adams (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn., 141 pounds), Matt Curtis (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn., 165 pounds) and Jake Grygelko (So., Loretto, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS, 165 pounds).

Sam Barber, who was named the new head coach of the Augsburg wrestling team in March, will accompany the Augsburg contingent to Colorado Springs for the week of action and training.

"This experience will allow our athletes to see first-hand how Olympic hopefuls live and train," Barber said. "It is also an awesome opportunity to be coached by the national coaching staff, and to wrestle with and compete against the very best wrestlers in the entire United States."

Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling practice will begin on Monday and run through Wednesday. Competition in both classes will take place on Friday and Saturday. Winners in each of the eight FILA weight classes (four in Freestyle, four in Greco-Roman) will advance to the FILA Junior World Championships Aug. 21-26 in Beijing, China. Champions from April's FILA Junior Nationals in Las Vegas, Nev., earn automatic berths into the best-of-three finals in each weight class, and will face the champions from the Friday-Saturday tournament.
