Subject: Tornado Safety Information-Severe Weather Week
Submitter:
Bruce K Bengry, Safety Specialist, Public Safety

Message: Tornado Safety Information

Before the Tornado...
Tornado watches highlight the area where tornadoes are most likely to develop. Continue with your normal activites, but keep informed of the latest weather information and be ready to get to shelter in case tornadoes develop quickly.

In the Home...
Go to the basement if possible. Get under a table, work bench, or some other sturdy furniture to avoid falling debris. A stairwell is also a good place to hide during a tornado.

If You Cannot Get to a Basement...
Go to a small interior room on the lowest floor. Closets, bathrooms, and interior halls afford the best protection in most cases, or try to hide under a bed. Get under something sturdy or cover yourself with blankets. Stay away from windows.

In an Apartment, School or Office Building...
Move to the inner-most room on the lowest level or to a pre-designated shelter area. Stay away from windows. If in a hallway, crouch down and protect your head from flying debris. Avoid areas with glass and large roof expansions.

In a Mobile Home, Car, Truck or Other Vehicle...
Abandon these as quickly as possible. Seek a sturdy shelter or permanent structure. Remember that many deaths occur when people try to drive away in a vehicle, but get caught in the deadly winds. Avoid bridges since they act as wind tunnels.

Last year, Minnesota saw 25 tornadoes, the fewest since 1990. There were 3 F3 tornadoes, the most F3 tornadoes since 1992. There was 1 F2 tornado. The other 21 tornadoes were rated F0 or F1. There were 2 tornado fatalities in 2006, one on August 24 and the other on September 16.

Wisconsin had a quiet year for tornadoes, with a total of 13. This is well below the average of 21 per year. All were rated F0 or F1, and only one injury was reported.

The statewide tornado drill is held on Thursday April 12th. The National Weather Service will simulate a tornado watch beginning at 9 a.m. Two tornado drills are planned. The first will take place statewide at 1:45 p.m.; all jurisdictions will activate their warning systems. This first drill allows schools, businesses, and hospitals to practice their sheltering plans. The second drill, at 6:55 p.m. The evening drill will allow families and second-shift workers an opportunity to practice their sheltering plans.

Subject: ACTC Registration for Day Students
Submitter:
Wayne Kallestad, Registrar, Registrar's Office

Message: Day Students,
ACTC registration begins on Monday, 16 April and ends on Friday, 27 April. The ACTC academic calendar is available on-line at:

http://www.augsburg.edu/enroll/registrar/index.html

click on Combined Academic Calendars for ACTC Schools. Registration will use a rolling 2 day period to match the other schools registration periods, so the first two days are for seniors, the next two days are for juniors, etc. Thus, 16 April is for seniors, 18 April is for juniors, and 20 April is for sophomores, etc.
- To expedite your registration process here at the Augsburg College Enrollment Center, you will need to have a printed copy of the web page from the other school with the class listing attached to the ACTC registration form.
- ACTC is for full-time Day students only.
- Students are limited to one ACTC course per semester, unless you have an approved ACTC major/minor form on file with the Registrar Office, or you have petitioned for and received an exception from the Student Standing Committee.

Subject: Sverdrup Lecture Program, April 16-17

"Exploring the Giant Magnetosphere of Jupiter"
April 16 - 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center; Parking in Lot L off of 25th Ave. and Riverside, Minneapolis.

Abstract: Jupiter is a planet of superlatives: it is the most massive planet in the solar system, rotates the fastest, has the strongest magnetic field, and has the most massive satellite system of any planet. These unique properties lead to active volcanoes on Io, a ton per second of sulfur and oxygen being spewed out of the moon, a vast population of energetic plasma trapped in the planet's strong magnetic field, and intense auroral emissions in Jupiter's polar atmosphere. The giant magnetosphere of Jupiter has been explored by telescopes on Earth, Hubble Space Telescope, several spacecraft flying past the planet plus the Galileo spacecraft that spent seven years in orbit. This talk will discuss our current understanding of this huge, dynamic structure and present what we hope to learn from the New Horizons spacecraft as it flies down Jupiter's magnetotail on its way to Pluto (spring 2007) and from the Juno mission (launch due in 2011) that will skim over Jupiter's poles.

Divisional Colloquium
“Women in Physics & Astronomy: Moving Beyond 'the Woman Problem'”
April 17 - Noon-1:00, Minneapolis Room, Christiansen Center; Parking in Lot L off of 25th Ave. and Riverside.

Abstract: Statistical studies of demographics by professional organizations such as the American Institute of Physics show practical reasons for moving from "how do we help these poor women" to "how to educate/hire/retain the talent we needed to supply a technical-trained workforce." Dr. Bagenal will discuss the professional pipeline, where it is leaky and how it can be fixed - including allowing for multiple pathways.

Biography: Fran Bagenal came to the US from England in 1976 to attend graduate school at MIT where she worked on data from the Voyager mission for her PhD. Her primary research interests are the magnetic fields of planets, the charged particles trapped in planetary magnetic fields and the interactions of moons with the particles and fields that surround them. She has been involved in the Voyager mission (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune), Galileo (Jupiter), Deep Space 1 (Comet Borrelly), the New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Juno mission to Jupiter's polar regions. She is Professor of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Funding for the Sverdrup Visiting Scientist Lecture Program made possible through the Sverdrup Endowment Fund, Augsburg College and the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium. For more information or to receive a poster of the Sverdrup Lecture call 612-330-1324 and leave your name, telephone number and mailing address and someone will return your call.
