Subject: Friday Seminar, March 2
Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: Road Dogs and Loners

Tim Pippert, the poet laureate of Inver Grove Heights, will be discussing the lives and survival strategies of homeless men.

The presentation will focus on road dogs and loners, two subgroups of homeless men.
Road dogs are street partnerships formed between homeless men for the purpose of companionship and protection. Their survival strategies and availability of family support will be compared to self-defined loners, those who find social isolation a necessary strategy for living on the street.

Refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m. in Lindell 301. The presentation begins at 4 p.m.

This is a chance to share your thoughts on Augsburg's system for faculty-led short-term programs, where we should go from here, and what kind of college support is necessary. You’ll also learn what Augsburg Abroad does to assist with these programs, what challenges they are addressing, and their ideas for the future.

This is an open forum, so please join us any time during the hour to make your voice heard. If you’ll be unable to attend, please contact Andrea Wojtanowicz, Coordinator of Short-term Programs, at wojtanow@augsburg.edu or x1669 with your ideas, questions, or concerns. Refreshments will be served.

Message: Last call for participants...

"The Road": From Here to Where?

The dates of the annual Life of the Mind Retreat are the Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon leading into Spring Break, March 16-17 . The retreat is at the Luxe Conference Center in nearby Chaska. We can accommodate 20-24 faculty and staff; there are still a few spaces remaining.

Cormac McCarthy's short, well-reviewed apocalyptic novel "The Road" is the centerpiece of the retreat and has already attracted colleagues from the humanities, arts, sciences, and professional studies. We will couple this with some short selections from scientist Richard Dawkins' provocative book on atheism, "The God Delusion," and Sam Harris's "The End of Faith," as well as some counter-responses. We'd love your suggestions for additional readings, counter-readings, films, etc. And we're likely resurrecting the 1983 film "Testament" as a complement to McCarthy's vision.

Please join us and encourage your colleagues to attend. Whether you're a newcomer or an old-timer, the retreat is a great way to meet colleagues across campus and to reconnect with old friends. The food and company and talk will be great.

Copies of “The Road” are available for retreat participants. Because of the cost of the retreat facility, we need firm commitment and early registration for the overnight stay. If you plan to join us for this intellectually stimulating gathering, please contact Terry Martin (martin@augsburg.edu, x1229) at the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Then, you can then pick up your items anytime. These coupons are also a great gift to give for any shoppers in your life!
