Subject: Critical Thinking Workshop All Departments
Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: RSVP now. The first of a series of workshops on the four graduation skills begins January 31 with a focus on Critical Thinking. Joan Griffin sent an invitation to department chairs two weeks ago with a note: “As we work toward the goal of embedding critical thinking throughout our major curricula, I hope that you will find this workshop helpful and that at least one person from your department will be able to attend.”

Are you part of a team from your department who will attend the workshop? Or are you the representative from your department? RSVP today.

Spring 2007 Skills Workshop Series
Critical Thinking Skills

When: January 31, 2007, 4 to 6 p.m.

Where: East Commons

1) Overview and clarification of Critical Thinking skill and how it will be addressed throughout your major
2) Examples of department plans, course syllabi, and assignments/exams
3) Working time on an individual syllabus
4) Getting ready to have your department plan completed and submitted by April 2007

Who should attend?
• There should be one member from every department (but two would be fine). Department chairs should designate which members of the department you would like to attend.

What should you bring?
• A syllabus from one of your courses
• Your department plan (if you already have one)

Please RSVP to Terry Martin in the Center for Teaching and Learning (x1229 or

Subject: Beware of fee based scholarship search
Submitter:
Meghan R Flores, Associate Director of Financial Aid, Enrollment Center

Message: Some college students in Minnesota have received a letter from a fee based scholarship search company. The letter is from College Financial Advisory and from the looks of their web site they are a private, for-profit scholarship search company. The logo on the letter is made to look like the U.S. Department of Education's logo (a tree), so it almost looks like it's coming from an official government agency. It's also written in a style that's very authoritative, rather than an honest pitch for a product:

"It's time to apply for all available 2007-2008 financial aid programs to help pay for your college expenses.....Submit the enclosed Student Aid Profile Form to proceed with the 2007-2008 College Financial Advisory student aid program and apply for the maximum available merit and need-based financial aid....The CFA Processing Center Department must receive all completed Student Aid Profile Forms no later than February 28, 2007."

BE WARNED- this is indeed a pitch for a product and is not a part of the Federal Department of Education's programs and does not replace filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
