Subject: CTL Professional Travel Funds: Important Notice
Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: The Center for Teaching and Learning has committed the yearly amount of regular professional travel funds for conferences and is no longer accepting applications. The good news is we have supported many faculty this past summer and fall and have approved proposals already submitted for upcoming conferences this spring. In fact, we were able to award more than our budget line for faculty conferences. There are still summer research, international travel and some Bush Funds available. Please also note that Dean Farley and the Committee are working on a plan to co-ordinate Dean's office and CTL travel funds into one easier to access location beginning next academic year. Please watch for notification of changes later this spring.

Subject: Life of the Mind Retreat, March 16-17
Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: A message from Doug Green…

The dates of the Annual Life of the Mind Retreat are the Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon leading into Spring Break, March 16-17. The retreat is at the Luxe Conference Center in nearby Chaska. We can accommodate 20-24 faculty and staff.

Cormac McCarthy's short, well-reviewed apocalyptic novel "The Road" is the likely centerpiece of the retreat, around which to bring together colleagues with interests in sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, and professional studies. We may couple this with some selections from scientist Richard Dawkins' provocative book on atheism, "The God Delusion." We'd love your suggestions for additional readings, counter-readings, films, etc.

Above all, please encourage your colleagues to attend. Whether you're a newcomer or an old-timer like me, the retreat is a great way to meet colleagues across campus and to reconnect with old friends. The food and company and talk will be great.

Copies of “The Road” are available for retreat participants. Because of the cost of the retreat facility, we need firm commitment and early registration for the overnight stay. If you plan to join us for this intellectually stimulating gathering, please contact Terry Martin (martin@augsburg.edu, x1229) at the Center for Teaching and Learning.

February 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10 at 7 p.m.
February 4 and 11 at 2 p.m.

Message: I have two items that I will gladly give to someone. The first is an old Emerson refrigerator that would be good for an office. My son got it as a hand-me-down for this residence hall room. No guarantees how much longer it will last. It is the typical small size. Also, I have a Sharper Image Quadra Silent Breeze Air Purifier that I will give to someone. There is differing data on the usefulness of these kinds of purifiers. Again my son used this in his residence hall room. Call me if you are interested in either item.
