Subject: Security Alert: Burglaries on Campus

Submitter:
John Pack, Director, Public Safety

Message: The Department of Public Safety wants you to be aware of two burglaries that occurred on campus recently.

The first incident occurred Wednesday, November 22 at midday. Two men entered an unsecured and unattended office in the Science building and took a laptop. Several people working in the building saw the men fleeing and notified Public Safety. DPS was unable to locate the suspects. The suspects for this incident were described to DPS as follows:

Suspect #1
Male
5’ 9” with a lean build
Medium completion African-American
Short dark hair
Wearing dark clothing
Possibly wearing glasses

Suspect #2
Male
5’ 4” with an average build
Dark completion African-American
Short dark hair
Wearing dark pants & a red “FUBU” parka

The second incident occurred Thursday evening (November 23) to Friday morning (November 24). An unknown person or persons entered the music building, broke the window in an interior door and took 8 computers. There is no sign of forced entry into Music or the connected buildings.

If you have any information regarding either of these incidents, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department of Augsburg’s Department of Public Safety (x1717).

You can help prevent crime on campus:
- Keep your valuable in hand or safely secured.
- Lock your workspace whenever you leave.
- Make sure that all doors, including exterior doors, close tightly behind you.
- Immediately report any suspicious activity to DPS at x1717.
- Do NOT attempt to stop a crime in progress. Notify DPS and, if you can do so safely, keep an eye on the suspects. Do not attempt to apprehend the suspects yourself. Your safety is more important than any piece of property.

Subject: Lilly Funding Available for Study Abroad Programs

Submitter:
Andrea Wojtanowicz, Short Term Program Coordinator, International Programs

Subject: Introductions to GIS Programs

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:

The Metro-Urban Studies Program is pleased to announce a workshop, "Introduction
to GIS Programs," to be held on Monday, December 4 from 3:45 - 5 p.m. in SVE 205.

GIS refers to Geographic Information Systems, which describes software that
maps social data, such as demographic information from the U.S. Census,
commuting patterns, labor patterns, etc. GIS is a great tool to use in your
classes to show how social characteristics have distinct spatial patterns. The
types of software we‚ll demonstrate are all free, internet-based, and easy for
you and your students to use. Some programs we’ll be showing are limited to
Minnesota, while others have data on the continental United States.

Nancy Fischer and Lars Christiansen, with the additional expertise of Amanda
Peterson, will be leading workshop participants through several GIS programs.
Even if you are not an urbanist, we guarantee that you'll find at least one of
these programs applicable to your work in the social sciences and humanities.

Please RSVP to Nancy Fischer at fischern@augsburg.edu by Wednesday, November
29th so that we have an accurate count of workshop participants. In your e-
mail, include any specific mapping questions/ideas that you would like us to
address.

We are looking forward to sharing these cool programs with you!

Nancy Fischer, Lars Christiansen, Amanda Peterson

Subject: NA Heritage Month - Did You Know?

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: Culture 101
At the risk of generalizing or perpetuating stereotypes I have found the following information useful:

American Indian culture is nonverbal. We learn by observation. We are not talkative. We are often labelled "shy" and may appear indifferent. We pay more attention to nonverbal cues (tone of voice, body language, etc.) than the words spoken.

It is not culturally appropriate to have attention focused on oneself hence we are reluctant to talk about ourselves or to speak out in class.

For traditional Natives, making eye contact is not appropriate.

Asking questions is not necessarily encouraged or condoned.

Anonymity is encouraged and valued.

Elders are respected as holders of the tribe's collective wisdom.

Community is valued over individuality.

A-moodlin’ and A-wiki-n’ Around China

I have traveled the world around, and yet a recent trip to China blew my mind as my eyes were opened to one of the fastest developing nations in the world and its impact on biodiversity and global climate. My Bio102 students and I are reading and discussing E.O. Wilson’s /The Future of Life/, and how my worldview has been changed by China. We are examining different countries and "hotspots" to find solutions and “save our world” from global climate change. To do so I designed and implemented an online wiki project supported by a constructionists approach to education on Moodle. In this Friday seminar I plan to share my wiki on China along with some student examples, and some photos and ideas of how China changed my worldview.

Refreshments will be served at 3:30; the presentation begins at 4.

Subject: Toy Drive

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: At this time of year we are poignantly aware of all that we have and that not everyone is as fortunate as we are. Please consider helping those who are less fortunate.

The American Indian OIC has asked for our help in collecting toys for children of their clients, students and staff as well as for two "adopted" families within the American Indian community.

Boxes will be available for toy donations in the Christensen Center Lobby and Urness/Mortenson Lobby from 11/28 through 12/10.

Because the AIOIC is trying to encourage family interaction, they prefer toys that will facilitate this type of interaction like games or books.

Think what a difference we could make if we each brought one toy to donate!

Thanks for your support!
Cindy

Subject: Neumann to play in Aztec Bowl all-star game
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg's Andrew Neumann selected to play on Division III all-star team in Aztec Bowl in Mexico on Dec. 16
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/112706neumann.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/27/06) -- Augsburg College tight end Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.) has been selected to play in the annual Aztec Bowl, an all-star game featuring NCAA Division III seniors facing a Mexican national team, in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on Dec. 16.

Neumann will be a part of a 48-member squad of the top Division III seniors in the country playing in the game, at Estadio Victoria in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. The team is selected by the American Football Coaches Association.

Neumann is the third Augsburg player to be selected to play in the Aztec Bowl. Quarterback Derrin Lamker was selected to the first Aztec Bowl matchup featuring the Division III all-star team in 1997, and wide receiver Scott Hvistendahl played in the 1998 game.

The Aztec Bowl is the traditional season-ending contest for Mexico's college football season. The game has been played 35 times since 1947, with the last nine games featuring the United States-Mexico matchup. The United States is 8-1 in the series and won last year's game 53-15 in Toluca, Mexico. Former Widener (Pa.), Delaware Valley (Pa.) and LaSalle (Pa.) coach Bill Manlove will coach the American team.

The 2006 game will be webcast live (audio) on Dec. 16 on the bowl's website, www.aztecbowl.com. Chitwood Sports Media of Jefferson, Texas, will provide the webcast, along with three 90-minute preview shows on Dec. 13, 14 and 15, starting at 6:30 p.m. each night. Global Football, a Granbury, Texas company specializing in international sports events and tours, will again organize the event.

Neumann earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first-team honors for the second season in a row in 2006. He finished this season with 741 receiving yards on 74 receptions, both totals tops among Augsburg receivers. He also scored four touchdowns this season. His receiving totals led MIAC tight ends for the second season in a row. Among all conference receivers in overall statistics, Neumann led the league in receptions per-game (10.0) and was fifth in receiving yards per-game (74.1). In league games-only statistics, Neumann was second in receptions per-game (7.75) and third in receiving yards per-game (75.8). Through the end of the regular season, Neumann ranked eighth nationally among NCAA Division III players in receptions per-game (7.4).

He became the fourth Augsburg player -- and first tight end -- to reach the 2,000-yard plateau in career receiving yards, finishing with 2,006 career yards on 186 receptions (second-most in school history). He finished his career with seven receiving touchdowns.

Neumann is also the starting heavyweight on Augsburg's wrestling team. He earned his first trip to the NCAA Division III national tournament last season, and has a 54-30 career record on the wrestling mat.

This season, Neumann was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V first team for football. Neumann is an elementary education major with a 3.51 grade-point average. Last season, Neumann also earned Football Gazette All-West Region honorable-mention honors.

As a high school athlete in Somerset, Wis., Neumann earned All-State honors and was a member of a Somerset squad that won a 2002 Wisconsin state championship. He earned all-conference honors twice. As a high school wrestler, he also won an individual state championship and finished with a school-record 125-18 career record. He qualified for state wrestling tournaments six times in his career, earning all-conference honors three times and all-region honors four times.

Under second-year head coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 1-9 overall, 1-7 in MIAC play in 2006. Augsburg's roster was a young one this season, with 43 freshmen on the 82-player roster.
