COON RAPIDS, Minn. (10/2/06) -- With two golfers earning all-conference honors and four golfers finishing among the top 15 in the field, the Augsburg College men's golf team claimed one of its best finishes ever at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, tying for second place in the three-day event, held Saturday to Monday at Bunker Hills Golf Course.

Led by All-MIAC honorees Andrew Johnson (Sr., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Erik Helgerson (Sr., Chisago City, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS), the Auggies tied for second in the 10-team meet with 901 strokes (303-303-295), tying Gustavus Adolphus College. St. John's won the MIAC title for the third straight year and sixth time in the last eight years with an 877 total (294-289-294).

The conference meet was held as a three-day, 54-hole event for the first time.

Johnson earned All-MIAC honors for the first time, finishing fourth overall with a 220 total (73-76-71), 4-over-par. His final-round 71 on Monday tied for the second-lowest score among the 50 golfers in the tournament.

Helgerson earned All-MIAC honors for the third time in his career with his best-ever conference-meet finish, a seventh-place 255 (75-76-74) total.

All five Augsburg golfers finished among the top 23 at the event. Brian May (Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) finished in 12th, just three strokes away from all-conference honors, with a 229 (77-78-74) total.
