Subject: Current trends in adolescent drug abuse

Submitter:
Carol Knicker, Assistant Professor, Education

Message: What educators need to know - Sept. 19, 3:30 - 5 p.m. East Commons
This presentation covers current trends in adolescent drug abuse from drinking games to "pharming." Whether purchased over-the-counter or under cover, what are the new, emerging drugs of abuse? Who uses them? What's new about them? What makes today’s youth particularly susceptible to the lure of meth? What role does the Internet play in normalizing drug abuse? Why the rise in prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse? This fast-paced presentation is based on the most recent information from multiple sources including emergency rooms, surveys, medical examiners, addiction treatment centers, and law enforcement.

THE PRESENTER:

Carol Falkowski, director of research communications at the Hazelden Foundation, has monitored drug abuse trends at the national level for two decades as part of an ongoing drug abuse-monitoring network of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and is author of Dangerous Drugs: An Easy-to-Use Reference for Parents and Professionals. She has provided consultation to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Justice, and many other agencies. In 2005 Falkowski produced two documentaries about methamphetamine with Twin Cities Public Television. She has appeared on NBC’s Today Show, CNN’s Live with Anderson Cooper, NPR’s Talk of the Nation, and in numerous daily newspapers including USA Today and the New York Times.

Subject: Have money: Need undergraduate researchers

Submitter:
Dixie Shafer, Director, Office for Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity

Message: Be a more competitive graduate/professional school applicant!

Collaborate with Augsburg faculty on their research, or on your own question.

There are faculty-student research grants available for this academic year, each worth up to $1000! You may choose your own start and end dates for your project, but applications are accepted (and awards made) on a rolling basis; therefore, it is to the applicants’ advantage to apply early in the academic year. The grants are administered by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. The URGO Advisory Committee, comprised of faculty members and the URGO Director, will begin reviewing proposals and making funding decisions on September 15.

Please contact Dixie Shafer (shafer@augsburg.edu) for an application.

Subject: Do you like MONEY?

Submitter:
Dixie Shafer, Director, Office for Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity

Message: The URGO office has a WEALTH of information about scholarships and fellowships for research and graduate school both in the U.S. and abroad.

If you are interested in research and graduate school, have a stellar academic record (e.g., GPA 3.7 or higher), and/or have low income or ethnic minority status, come talk to Dixie Shafer in the URGO office (shafer@augsburg.edu, x1447) about options you might qualify for.

Application due dates are right around the corner, in October, for the Jacob Javits, Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Gates/Cambridge, American Graduate, Fulbright, and Hertz Foundation fellowships and scholarships. If you are interested in any of these prestigious awards, contact Dixie immediately! These applications take time.

Start planning now, too, for those due in November: Andrew Mellon, National Science Foundation, Soros, Davies-Jackson, and Ford Foundation.

Subject: Do you like money . . . and Canada?

Submitter:
Dixie Shafer, Director, Office for Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity

Message: Augsburg’s Mildred Joel Canadian Studies Endowment funding is available to those undergraduate students who wish to conduct research that focuses on Canadian Studies.

Disciplines lending themselves most readily to what is termed Canadian Studies are the social sciences and the humanities, such as business studies, economics, law, international relations, history, politics, sociology, geography, arts, literature in English or French, sociolinguistics, linguistic duality, education, communications policy, media studies, planning, science policy, social administration, environmental studies, architecture, and other related fields. (Gernerally speaking, research on purely scientific subjects such as physics, chemistry, etc., which would not lead to a better knowledge and understanding of Canada per se will not be funded, nor will exclusively technological or methodological issues).

Please contact Dixie Shafer (shafer@augsburg.edu) for an application.

Subject: AugNet vs Moodle

Submitter:
Wayne Kallestad, Registrar, Registrar's Office

Message: I have been getting a lot of questions about AugNet Records and Registration class lists and Moodle. If they differ, please contact your LFC for this issue. Remember, the official class list is AugNet Records and Registration, not Moodle.

Subject: Money for undergraduate conference attendees

Submitter:
Dixie Shafer, Director, Office for Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity

Message: Applications for student conference travel funding are available from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO). Faculty and student(s) are asked to collaborate on completing the application. Priority is given to students attending academic conferences and presenting research findings.

Applications are accepted (and awards made) on a rolling basis; therefore, it is to the applicants’ advantage to apply early in the academic year.

Subject: Academic Alert

Submitter:
Sheila Anderson, Associate Director of Academic Advising, Academic Advising

Message: The Academic Alert system is up and running for the term. Thanks to each of you who submitted Academic ALERT messages in the past. We hope you will continue to use ALERT. All Instructors, Day/Weekend, regular/adjunct, are encouraged to send an ALERT message to students when academic problem areas are identified. Problem areas might include, but are not limited to: lack of attendance, unprepared for class, poor performance on test and assignments, and or lack of participation. ALERT is not meant to replace face to face interaction with students. Each of you likely addresses academic issues with students as they arise. The ALERT message can however be used in addition to speaking with the student and/or when you have been unable to reach them via phone or e-mail. The electronic ALERT message replaces the paper format of the Mid-Term Progress Report. We hope that by reporting concerns early, students will have greater opportunity to correct the situation and salvage the course.

Now is the perfect time to report students who have never attended your course(s). This gives us an opportunity to contact students and process withdrawal paperwork as needed. The Academic ALERT message is generated from the Augnet Records and Registration class roster. When logged into Augnet, click on Records and Registration. From Records and Registration, go into the appropriate class roster. You’ll see a “Prepare Alert” link next to each student’s name. Click on the link to access the alert message system. You can also access the alert system through Augnet Administrative Tasks.

Please contact me (andersos or X1777) if you have difficulty using the academic alert system.

Subject: Faculty: CLASS and Access students and exams

Submitter:
Regina Hopingardner, Administrative Assistant, CLASS Program

Message: For every exam that students with disabilities want to take in the Groves Lab instead of in the classroom, they have to fill out a “Proctor Request Form."

When they hand these to you, please take the time to look at them carefully. The top section of the form should be completely filled out by the student before you get it. You need to fill in the middle part, sign the bottom and give the other copies back to the student.

Most importantly, you need to let us know if you want to deliver the test to us yourself or have us pick it up, and if you want to pick up the completed test from us or have the proctor return it to your office. Make sure you keep the white copy of the Proctor Request to attach to the student’s test when it’s delivered to us.

Students are responsible for having the signed copies of Proctor Requests returned to the Groves Lab at least seven days before the test date. If you have any questions, please call Rebecca Lund the Accommodations Specialist at x1353.

Subject: What?s this ?AA? - Academic Alert?

Submitter:
Sheila Anderson, Associate Director of Academic Advising, Academic Advising

Message: Have you checked your Augsburg e-mail account lately and found a message with the subject line “AA” and followed by your name? Perhaps you’ve avoided opening this message in fear of infecting your computer with a virus. Thankfully this isn’t another virus. It also isn’t a hoax. If you receive this message, you’ve gotten an Academic Alert from a concerned instructor. It’s important that you open and respond to the instructor’s academic issues.

Academic Alert is an electronic tool used by faculty to make students aware of academic concerns. It is often used in conjunction with individual meetings. An Instructor will send an alert to an individual student when issues limiting academic success are identified. Some examples of reasons for sending an alert include: lack of class participation, poor performance on test or homework, and lack of attendance. The alert message is automatically sent to the student recipient, his or her faculty adviser, and members of the Academic Alert response team.

What should you do if you receive an alert? First and foremost, don’t ignore it. Students might think of the alert process as a warning call. It is meant to identify issues and give you a chance to resolve them. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away. Next, we encourage alert recipients to speak with the faculty member submitting the message. This helps to clarify issues and determine options. Finally, decide how you to resolve the issue(s). Some factors to consider when making your decision include: course requirements, financial aid, withdrawal deadlines and enrollment status. Advisers are available in many offices to assist you evaluating your options. Please feel free to contact any of the resources listed in the alert message for assistance in evaluating your options.

Subject: Party for Augsburg at North Country Co-op

Submitter:
Mary L True, Associate Director, Center for Service Work and Learning

Message: NORTH COUNTRY CO-OP BRINGS IN LOCAL FARMERS TO WELCOME BACK STUDENTS, FACULTY & STAFF

North Country Co-op welcomes back students, faculty and staff of the University of Minnesota and Augsburg College on Tuesday, September 12 from noon until 4:30 p.m. We’ve invited some of our local farmers and other food friends down to our parking lot to join us for great food, music and a little farm experience in the middle of the city!

Folks from the U of M and Augsburg make up well over half of North Country’s customers, and now come to us in larger numbers than ever due to our unique and healthy lunch options. Many students also become member-owners and volunteers, becoming more involved in their community and knowledgeable about natural foods and the cooperative economy.

Beaver Creek Ranch will be grilling their delicious turkey brats, and will bring along an adorable Scottish Highland calf for your petting enjoyment. Beaver Creek Ranch is a sustainable farm near Grantsburg, Wis. that raises organic soybeans and vegetables as well as beef and turkey. Doug Anderson of Beaver Creek was profiled along with other farmers by Minnesota Public Radio.

For a vegetarian option, Trempealeau Hotel will be grilling their popular Walnutburgers as well. The hotel, based in scenic Trempeleau, Wis. on the Mississippi River, began selling their Walnutburgers frozen after they became a favorite of the people visiting their hotel.

Peace Coffee will be giving away free samples of their delicious organic Fair Trade coffee, and will have a slide show explaining how Fair Trade allows coffee farmers to stay on their land and provide for their families by giving them a greater share of the profits.

Whitewater Valley Orchard will be on hand with delicious local apples (free with purchase of a brat or Walnutburger), plums, apple chips and mini-pies. Whitewater Valley Orchard is located in St. Charles, Minn. and also produces great apple butter.

The Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), one of the most effective campus groups, will be on hand to tell students how they can become involved in furthering Fair Trade and ecological living.

See your at the Co-op on Tuesday!
