Subject: Friday Seminar, November 16, 3:30 in Lindell 301

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:

"Riffing Cuneiform" presented by Cass Dalglish

Henry Louis Gates describes the jazz aesthetic as a form that "suggests a given structure precisely by failing to coincide with it - that is, suggests it by dissemblance." This view of jazz poetry arises from a notion that an essential quality of jazz is the acknowledgment of an existing line in the midst of its variation and inversion. Cass Dalglish has applied such a jazz aesthetic to the reading of poetry written in Sumerian cuneiform by enheduanna (2350 BCE) and she will talk about her work "Riffing Cuneiform" during the Friday Seminar on November 18.

Refreshments are served at 3:30; the presentation begins at 4 p.m.

Subject: Syllabus Workshop

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: Memory Aids for the Absent-Minded Professor
Session 1:
The Syllabus

Thursday, November 17, 3:30-5 p.m. in Cedar.

A syllabus provides an initial point of contact between professor and student. As such, it plays a critical role in the establishment of the learning environment not only by the stated objectives, policies, and expectations, but also by the tone of the communication.

Criteria of evaluating syllabi will be discussed, then used to evaluate sample syllabi. Please bring to the workshop a copy of a syllabus you would like to revise.

The workshop will be facilitated by John Schmit and Matt Haines.
To pre-register call: x1229 or e-mail: martin@augsburg.edu.

Subject: Latest campaign statistics

Submitter:
Betsey Norgard, Director of Publications, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Congratulations and thanks to those of you who have given to support the Access to Excellence campaign. As of 11-9-05 the results are:

Overall giving---233 donors, or 28%
Full-time faculty giving---54%
Full-time staff and staff of 50% or more time---41%

For those of you still considering how to respond, there is still time; and remember that each gift--no matter how great or small--counts toward our goal.

Here are a few comments from members of the faculty-staff campaign committee about why they give:

"First and foremost, I give to support student scholarships. The small amounts that are given out mean a lot to the students who receive them."

"If I don't believe in this place, why should anyone else?"

I support Augsburg "to give thanks to the College for helping me get an education and providing meaningful employment."

"We all stand on the shoulders of Augsburg's past and present leaders whose vision we seek to carry forth."

If you need contribution forms, go to Institutional Advancement in Science 152; or call Kathryn Croyle at x1171 or e-mail her at croyle@augsburg.edu

Subject: The United Way Campaign Countdown

Submitter:
Michele R Kidwell, Enrollment Assistant, Enrollment Management

Message:

Once again, it's that time of year when we, as a community, participate in our annual United Way campaign. This year, in addition to monetary contributions, there will be several opportunities to participate with other types of gifts. If you aren't able to contribute financially, I encourage you to participate in one (or more!) of these other wonderful opportunities.

Week #1: (November 14th through November 18th)
Book Drive
Clean off those book shelves and bring all those books you won't read again to the information desk in Christensen Center. Books collected will be donated to various charities that support children, battered women's shelters, and state prison programs.

Weeks #2- #3: (November 21st through December 2nd)
Mitten, Hat and Scarf Tree
Bring in new and gently used winter accessories and decorate the tree by the information desk in Christen Center. All collected items will be donated to area clothes closets and homeless shelters.

Week #4: (December 5th through December 9th)
Toy Drive
Bring new, unwrapped toys and age appropriate gifts for teens to the information desk in Christensen Center. All collected items will be donated to Toys for Tots.

Throughout the campaign
Project Angel Tree
If your department would be interested in combining your efforts and "adopting" children as part of the Project Angel Tree program, contact Michele Kidwell. Project Angel Tree is an organization that collects and distributes gifts to children of incarcerated inmates in area prisons.

Financial Contributions
You can complete your enrollment form for the Untied Way at anytime and drop in the campus mail (CB 143) or drop it by Christensen Center 100C.

Thanks!

Subject: Christmas card orders due tomorrow at noon

Submitter:
Lynn H Mena, Manager of Publications, Public Relations and Communication

Message: It's time to order your Augsburg Christmas cards! This year, the featured artwork is an illustration of the cupola on top of Hoversten Chapel, which will be printed in silver foil on forest green, textured cardstock.

The verses inside the card are:

INSIDE TOP:
Faith believes that all things are and ought to be of God, and hope accepts and sustains what faith believes. Faith takes us from ourselves, that we should refer everything to God with praise and gratitude. Hope fills us with the concerns of others, that we may endure all in patience without resentment. Love reduces us to that nothing which we were in the beginning, so that we desire neither goods nor anything outside of God, but simply that we should commit ourselves truly to his good pleasure. This is the way of the cross by which we come most speedily into life.
-Martin Luther's Christmas Sermon

INSIDE BOTTOM:
Wishing you a joyous Christmas and a peace-filled New Year.

You may view a proof of the card in the Public Relations and Communication AugNet public folder.

The estimated cost is 50 cents each including envelopes (the final cost will be determined by the overall quantity of card orders--the more orders we receive, the lower the price).

Please fill out the following information and return to Lynn Mena by noon on Tuesday, November 15, via e-mail (mena@augsburg.edu) or fax (x1780).
