New  AmeriCorps Promise Fellow Program: The Minnesota Alliance With Youth sponsors the AmeriCorps Promise Fellow Program. This program brings caring adults into middle schools and high schools to increase school engagement for students identified early to be at risk for high school drop out. Student teachers finishing up this December can serve their community and immerse themselves in a school environment prior to applying for full-time positions for the next academic year. Members would receive a modest living allowance, Education Award ($2,907.50) to be used towards student loans of future education, and federal student loan forbearance.

New  Service-Learning by Design: Register now for the online course Service-Learning by Design lead by NYLC instructor, Dr. Sue Root. The course offers a unique approach to planning service-learning units which may yield more powerful student learning: backward planning. You will explore the three steps in backward planning of service-learning in detail including: 1) Identifying Desired Results; 2) Creating Assessments (both formative and summative) to measure student progress and achievement of desired results; and 3) Designing Learning Experiences that support the attainment of learning goals.

New  The ADAPT4U (After Deployment: Adaptive Parenting Tools) Study is looking for dedicated individuals to conduct structured interviews with military families. The study seeks to develop and evaluate tools to support resilience among military families as they cope with the stress of deployment and reintegration.   Spring 2018 Student Teaching Announcement: Teacher candidates in general education (every content area other than special education) who will be ready to student teach in Spring 2018 are required to attend a mandatory Information Session to learn about the application process. “Ready to student teach” means you are done with all of your licensure coursework before the term in which you student teach.   Attention Augsburg teacher education students: All undergraduate level courses taken to fulfill requirements for a teaching license must be taken at the traditional grading system (A, B, C…), and students must earn a C or better. A grade of C- is not sufficient for the teaching license. Starting fall 2017. A “P” can be earned with a C-, thus the P/N option is not allowed for the teaching license. Teacher licensure candidates with questions about this policy should speak with Peg Finders, Chair, Department of Education <finders@augsburg.edu>.

  Special Education candidates and ABS licensed teachers: Legislation impacting academic and behavioral strategist licensure (ABS) has changed.  ABS continuing licenses may be issued and renewed without requiring the candidate to hold or be recommended for licensure in any other field.

This means that those holding an ABS license will NOT be required to seek additional anchors to maintain their teaching licenses.
