Course section planning
Work is underway to confirm additional class sections and the schedule of courses for Fall 2019. The standard class time schedule will remain consistent with prior years; there is no plan to overhaul the standard course schedule. The Provost’s Office is working with the deans to identify academic departments whose help will be needed this summer for academic planning. Chairs in those departments will be engaged to determine how to accomplish this work. The deans will also work with chairs to set appropriate course capacities for various courses based on discipline, pedagogy, and character and scope of the course.

Classroom identification and readiness
An inventory of capacity in existing classrooms has been compiled. This past spring, a cross-functional team of Facilities, IT, the Provost’s Office, and University Events documented a detailed inventory of classroom, event, and meeting space technology, furniture and equipment, and room condition. This inventory will be used to identify priority needs if classroom spaces (or spaces to be used as classrooms) need upgrades this summer.

Faculty resources
An estimate has been completed regarding the expected additional adjunct and overload instructors needed to cover anticipated additional course sections. Once funds are approved, positions will be posted this summer.

Financial impact and resources
Expenses and additional resources. Karen Kaivola will meet regularly with the Finance team and President’s Office, to confirm funding for needed incremental expenses for the planning and support of the incoming class.

Revenue. Devon Ross, with Robert Gould, vice president of strategic enrollment management, will monitor net tuition revenue through the summer.

Opening Convocation/City Service
Opening Convocation will need to be held in Si Melby, as Hoversten Chapel will not accommodate the large class size. Campus Life and University Events are coordinating this planning. In addition, work is underway to identify an appropriate roster of City Service Day opportunities.

Operational functions
Additional resource requests have been estimated for DPS and Facilities Management. Shipping and Receiving is in process of determining additional locations for storing an expected increase of packages, especially at the start of the academic year. Augsburg’s dining service is also working to ensure mealtime traffic flow is well supported.

Residence Life
Our current residential housing contracts are on track for 90+ percent occupancy. Because we are expecting a large incoming first-year class, we are brainstorming a variety of ideas to determine which might be feasible if demand for on-campus housing exceeds our current inventory of rooms. Any solutions the university might provide will be of similar quality in terms of privacy, occupancy, furniture, and amenities as our current housing options.

SOAR and early registration
An additional orientation session was added to the standard SOAR schedule (see the Campus Life SOAR page for details. Additionally, 20 seats were added to each of the four first-year early registration sessions.
