Parking Lot Designations and Use
The Augsburg Department of Public Safety would like to thank students, staff and faculty for their efforts to assist and comply with new parking lot restrictions. We would also like to take the opportunity to remind drivers of the specific lot designations and access provided to each permit type.
Residential Students: Lot B, L, M or O
Commuter, AU Grad Students: Lot K, B, L, C (on street) M or O
Staff/Faculty: Lot D, A (not those designated for carpool), L, M or O
Carpool: Lot A (spaces designated with signs)
If questions arise, please check the back of valid permits for lot assignments. Lots M and O will not be listed, as they were added after permits were printed.

Memorial Window A/C Removal Oct. 11-13

Why Academic Freedom Matters in the Classroom
This fall the Augsburg chapter of the Association of American University Professors has organized the presentation and discussion, "Why Academic Freedom Matters in the Classroom," with Carleton professors Jeff Snyder and Amna Khalid, who recently published a major article in The New Republic on academic freedom and campus bias response teams (11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., Thursday, 17 Nov., in Sateren Auditorium). The event is co-sponsored by Faculty Senate with support from the Provost and CTL.
All students, staff, administration, and faculty are welcome. We anticipate a lively, vigorous, and challenging discussion.
Last Day for New Fac to Sign Up for EdTech Cohort
New full-time faculty, there is still time to sign up for the EdTech Cohort! Email Mara atctl@augsburg.edu to sign up by the end of the day today.
This unique opportunity will be composed of three 90 minute face-to-face sessions (3:30-5:00 p.m. on 10/20, 11/3, and 11/17) with online activities scheduled during the intervening weeks. The goal is to familiarize new faculty with strategies for integrating Moodle and other learning technologies with their individual teaching approach. Activities will encourage participants to incorporate new strategies into their teaching preparation to avoid significantly increasing their workload.
A stipend of $200 will be awarded upon successful completion of the cohort. Any new full-time (tenure track or continuing special appointments) faculty who have joined Augsburg in the last two years are eligible.
Students, Apply for the 2017 Model UN Delegation
Applications for this academic year's Model UN Delegation are now being accepted. Students must first apply for the Augsburg delegation using the link below. Those accepted will enroll in POL 368 in the spring semester and travel to NYC for the national conference on March 18-25, 2017. A lab fee of $500 is required; the college will cover the remainder of the cost.
The priority deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Monday, November 14.
Prerequisites are POL 160 World Politics OR consent of the instructor. Any undergraduate student, regardless of major or class year, may apply.

Awesome Results from Fall Blood Drive
Many thanks to all of you who donated blood with Memorial Blood Centers this week at the annual fall blood drive. While we don't have specific details, I received preliminary information that we achieved 98% of the goal for the drive. This is the highest percentage we have ever had at Augsburg.
So thank you, thank you, thank you Auggies for helping save so many lives this week! We will shoot for 100% for the spring drive on March 29, 2017!

Volunteer at National AISES Conference in Mpls
The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is seeking volunteers for the National Conference held at the Minneapolis Convention Center this year November 8-12, 2016. The goal is to provide an opportunity for everyone to contribute to another successful AISES National Conference. Volunteers will receive a discount on National Conference registration in the form of one free day pass or a discount on full conference registration. We request volunteers commit to a full time slot within the iVolunteer database. Each slot is approximately 4 hours in length. With that commitment, volunteers will be provided a volunteer shirt and entry to the conference on the day of volunteering.

NSF AugSTEM Scholarship Applications Now Open
AUGSTEM SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Applications are now open for the 2016-17 AugSTEM Program!
The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF DUE-1565060), AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year. (Differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need.) Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
* Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)
* Within 5 semesters of graduating
* Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
* U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
* Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA
APPLICATIONS DUE: OCTOBER 27, 2016
Incoming community college transfer students and Augsburg students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Academic Freedom & AAUP Welcome Events
On Thursday, 13 October, immediately after the faculty meeting, the Augsburg chapter of the Association of American University Professors (AAUP) is hosting a "Buy a New Faculty Member a Beer Campaign" at the refurbished Viking Bar (just down Riverside, two blocks past Jimmy Johns). If you have joined the campus community in Fall 2015 or more recently, we want to welcome you to Augsburg. Please join us for a free beer, glass of wine, or non-alcoholic beverage.
AAUP was founded in 1915 by, among others, the philosopher and educator John Dewey. As our documents state, "we believe higher education is a fundamental human right to which freedom of inquiry and expression are integral" and advocate for and develop some of the most important policies and documents to this end in our profession. MFA at Twin Cities Book Festival on Sat., Oct. 15
Howling Bird Press, the Augsburg MFA program's student-run publishing house, will participate at the 2016 Twin Cities Book Festival at the State Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 15, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Twin Cities Book Festival is not only the largest literary gathering in the Upper Midwest, it is the annual get-together for the Twin Cities' devoted literary community. This FREE, day-long festival brings people together to celebrate our vibrant literary culture. Look for us there!

Morning Chapel: Blessing of the Animals at 10:40am
Join us in the chapel at 10:40 a.m. today as we celebrate St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals. Our service will include a lively blessing ritual of animals and pets to honor St. Francis' devotion to all God's creatures. Bring your pet (or picture of your pet) to chapel for this special worship service in Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center. Special guest: Jennifer Troy, Executive Director of Paws for Learning, will join us with her therapy dogs! Claire Felknor will speak about her therapy dog. Stay after chapel for community time, coffee and treats!

Keeping Track of Auggies
Olivia Maccoux To Receive Award
Olivia Maccoux, junior, will be honored at the Hydrocephalus Association annual recognition event in New York.
In the announcement, the Hydrocephalus Association wrote "Olivia suffered a brain hemorrhage (PHH) at birth and had her first shunt placed at nine
months of age. She has endured over 120 surgeries in her short 20 years. Despite all that she has been through medically, Olivia played four sports in high school and was awarded 'Athlete of the Year' in 2014, which was the same year that she graduated on time from high school with Honors. She is now a junior at Augsburg College in Minneapolis where she has been on the Dean's list each Semester. She is studying Communications and ultimately hopes to work for a nonprofit in health care like HA. Olivia was recently featured on People.com for her heroic journey and fighting spirit."
