WEC Student Receives Scholarship to Study Abroad

Rachel Provence, a senior accounting major in the WEC program, was awarded the Mary E. Larsen Scholarship to participate in the Sights and Sounds of Paris study abroad opportunity this winter-break.

The Mary E. Larsen Scholarship is awarded annually to one Weekend College student based upon academic achievement, and is intended to encourage international travel and studies abroad to broaden students perspectives on international business, cultural, political and social issues.

Rachel is excited that she has been given an opportunity to study abroad. The program fits perfectly into her studies, as both courses she will complete are courses she needs to graduate. The program will also allow her to complete her Augsburg Experience while learning about art, music and culture.

Congratulations to Rachel, and safe travels to everyone studying abroad this winter!

First Word Gathering, which takes place on WEC Saturdays from 8:00am to 8:20am, is on hiatus through the end of the year. Please watch for the announcement of its return closer to Winter Trimester.

Journalism Students Learn First-Hand About the Media

Dan Jorgensen’s class, English 227: Journalism, meets on Fridays as part of the WEC schedule. He takes his students to media outlets throughout the Twin Cities to learn first-hand what goes into producing the news for newspapers, radio and television.

This past week, Dan took his class to KFAI Radio just a few blocks from campus. It was an exciting time to visit the station, as two candidates for the 5th District Congress in the state of Minnesota traded verbal blows during their debate on the radio. Not only did their behavior make local news, but reached media outlets across the nation.

The following are a few photos that were taken while in studio at KFAI. The class has also visited WCCO Television, where they sat in on a 6:00 PM newscast with Frank Vascellaro and Amelia Santaniello, as well as the Twin Cities Business Journal. In addition, the class will visit Minnesota Public Radio and have guest speakers from the Star Tribune. These opportunities allow the students to learn from the news professionals about what they do and how they do it.

First Word Gathering

Please join us for First Word Gathering, a chance to experience learning from a spiritual perspective. Every WEC Saturday from 8:00-8:20 a.m. in the Foss Atrium, we gather over a cup of coffee, listen to a great speaker, reflect on a topic and build friendships with each other. Getting here early also guarantees a parking spot on Saturday mornings. It’s a great way to get to know other adult students here on campus.

The theme for Saturday October 6th is Hospitality. Our speaker will be Judy Johnson, Associate Director of Transfer Admissions.
