Congratulations Sheila for receiving the November Auggie Pride Award

Nomination: Sheila has provided primary leadership for assisting students with physical disabilities since we merged the Access Center with the CLASS Office when Sadie Curtis retired. While Sheila has taken on this leadership task for the last few years, in recent months she brought together several to review challenges in the new Hagfors Center and come up with solutions. As she gets ready to retire at the end of December, Sheila is making sure colleagues and her supervisor in CLASS have the background and knowledge to assist students after she retires. Sheila does all this on top of the specific work she does with students this semester.

Hana Salad

Nomination: Hana is the manager of the East African Student to Teacher (EAST) scholarship program in the Education Department. It is recruitment time for our new cohort of EAST Scholars! Hana has done incredible work with outreach. We have over 70 people who are planning to apply for about 15 spots. Hana has single handedly increased our visibility—making personal and professional connections across the Twin Cities—attending meetings in and across the East African communities to spread the word about our scholarship and Augsburg University. Hana does this work while actively supporting the academic success of our currently enrolled students—who are thriving at Augsburg and as future teachers because of Hana‘s individual support. She takes calls and texts from students 24/7. Her tireless advocacy of Augsburg is making a difference.

Congratulations to Katie Asfeld, Assistant Director of Admissions and Multicultural Student Services—Ruby Murillo, Jennifer Simon, and Hli Vang for receiving the October Auggie Pride Awards. Their support of Augsburg’s students is above and beyond their call of duty and their impact is felt across campus. Staff Senate admires their outstanding work and are honored to award them with this month’s Auggie Pride Award.

Congratulations Katie for receiving the October Auggie Pride Award

Nomination: Katie has worked in the undergraduate admissions office for a year now and has done a tremendous amount of work to help bring new and innovative ideas to help with recruiting and enrolling new Auggies. In her short time she has brought a more critical eye to improving campus events, as well as constantly pushing our office to think of how our policies effect underrepresented populations. She was instrumental in the push to move the campus into being a test optional institution, thereby removing a financial barrier for many of our students. Although she has been here for only a short about of time, her kindness and grace has touched every single one of her co-workers and she is absolutely living the missions and vision of Augsburg.

Congratulations to Multicultural Student Services for receiving the October Auggie Pride Award

Nomination: Augsburg Multicultural Student Services is 4 departments: Pan-Afrikan Center, American Indian Student Services, Pan-Asian Student Services, and Latinx Student Services. This fall, as Augsburg welcomed new students, with a yet-again larger percent of students from communities of color, we had an open position – the director, Pan-Afrikan Center. The current three directors, Ruby Murillo, Jennifer Simon, and Hli Vang orchestrated arranging the workload so they could be helpful to assist students who had work—and would work with the Pan-Afrikan Director. Besides individual work, it involved programs such as the Fall Leadership retreat (with 150-175 students, a welcome back event, and advising the Pan-Afrikan Student Union.

September 2018 AUGGIE PRIDE RECIPIENTS

Congratulations to Ilse Rolf, Gift Entry Administrative Assistant and Bonnie Tensen, E-Learning Specialist for receiving the September Auggie Pride Awards. Their constant support and service to others cross campus impacts far beyond those they work with. Staff Senate admires their outstanding work and are honored to award them with this month’s Auggie Pride Award.

Ilse Rolf

Institutional Advancement gathers for a group picture to celebrate Ilse's award
Congratulations Ilse for receiving the September Auggie Pride Award

Nomination: Ilse keeps IA running- she deposits all donations that Augsburg receives, registers people for all kinds of events on and off campus, and works hand in hand with Accounting to ensure everyone’s gifts to Augsburg are channeled into the right place- just to name a FEW things that she does! Not only is she a dedicated employee, she’s also supportive of her team and her department- ready to lend a helping hand or an listening ear to anything that comes up. She’s also part of a multi-generational Augsburg family, and her love of this place and it’s people shines through all the work that she does. I have no idea what our department would do without her, and that is why she is a very deserving candidate for the Auggie Pride Award.

Bonnie Tensen

IT gathers to celebrate Bonnie's award
Congratulations Bonnie for receiving the September Auggie Pride Award

Nomination: Bonnie is integral to our university community. She serves as such an important resource for faculty as we work to makes our courses more accessible and engaging. She is a fantastic teacher, who is patient and willing to show you the same thing over and over until you get it. Most importantly, however, she is a great mentor. She has a wealth of experience and wisdom from working in higher ed. She recognizes strength in faculty (especially junior faculty members) and ensures an environment where those strengths are recognized and called upon for the good of the university.

Another September nomination that we’d like to recognize is our TRIO/SSS colleagues, Aly Olson, Kevin Cheatham, and Melody Geiger. Congratulations on your successful Summer Bridge program and the upcoming nationwide 50th Anniversary celebration! Thank you for all that you do for our students and community.

STAFF SENATE AND UC-SUBCOMMITTEE FORUM—Fall Session

Posted on Categories Open Forum

Event Recap:

Staff Senate Overview

The Augsburg University Staff Senate shall serve Augsburg University and its staff by providing a forum to foster and promote a positive and meaningful dialogue among staff, faculty, students and administration by advising in decision making processes, by serving as an advocate for staff, by promoting professional development opportunities, and by recognition of staff’s contributions to furthering and upholding the mission and values of Augsburg University. Learn more about Staff Senate.

Design Committee—Jodi Collen & Rebecca John

Priorities for 2018-19:

  • Working to address ‘cringe-inducing spots’
  • Seeking landscaping opportunities to improve aesthetic appearance
  • Making our entrances and gateways more welcoming
  • Continuing progress on signage / wayfinding
    • 6 installed to date
    • 2nd phase will include 9 more (aiming for summer ’19) and 1 monument sign
    • Phase 3 will add 10 parking signs
    • Will also be doing user testing of “tower signs” to determine efficacy
  • Conversations ongoing to make Quad more accessible for those with mobility challenges

Audience questions (Both questions were noted and will be taken to committee):

  • Could parking lots be better named (currently not intuitive or memorable)?
  • Could exterior signage be added to indicate which entrances / spaces are accessible?

Space and Use Planning Committee—Rebecca John

Priorities for 2018-19:

  • Currently reviewing requests for new space and changes in space use (Nursing, Social Work, Physician Assistant)
  • Making recommendations for department moves into vacated spaces
  • Considering adjacencies that support collaboration and efficiency
  • FY20 budget planning

Rebecca reported that office moves can be both tricky and costly. The Space and Use Planning Committee helps propose and estimate budget for a prioritized set of moves each fiscal year.

University Council representatives—Jeff Swenson and Jim Trelstad-Porter

Jeff Swenson and Jim Trelstad-Porter reiterated that UC is not a governance body, but rather a deliberative body that meets to critically evaluate a broader range of viewpoints to provide President Pribbenow with advice on decision making and priority setting. The council’s effectiveness is gauged by improvements in internal communication and information sharing, and whether the campus community feels it is a safe space for idea sharing across departments and programs.

Minutes are available online at sites.augsburg.edu/universitycouncil

Environmental Stewardship Committee—Emily Schilling

Practices and Operations:

  • Reducing our carbon footprint
  • Encouraging more sustainable purchasing practices
  • Eliminating the sale/reimbursement of bottled water

Curriculum and Scholarship:

  • Support sustainability across the curriculum;
  • Support professional development;
  • Encourage faculty who are interested in sustainability-related research
  • Provide review and oversight to changes to Student Learning Outcomes.

Ownership / Culture:

  • Build up a culture of composting / organics recycling,
  • Encourage every member of the Augsburg community to consider sustainability during their day-to-day activities

Leadership Forum—Leif Anderson

Leif shared a definition of a Community of Practice. The Forum is focused on deliberation, co-learning, and relationship building. The Forum uses a “flipped classroom” format, aligned with the Focus Conversation series.

Example of recent work:

The Leadership Forum deliberated as a group and took part in a structured conversation around the “Engage – Aspire – Grow” framework for the Augsburg2025 Strategic Plan. Outcomes included thoughtful consideration of terms such as “democratic purpose” and “public calling”; and requests to more closely examine issues surrounding affordability, growth, and sustainability.
